He is 1-2 going into tonight's assignment against the Montreal Expos at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers haven't scored many runs for him, and, characteristically, he pins some of the blame on himself. "I've got to improve my bunting," he says. That reminds me of the night Fernando Valenzuela pitched a gem during his remarkable rookie year, but didn't seem thrilled afterward. "I need to improve my running," he said. At the time, Valenzuela needed the help of translator Jaime Jarrin during interviews.

In contrast, Valdes has become comfortable with English. Valdes was only 8 when Fernandomania struck Southern California but says he began to follow the Dodgers closely a couple of years later. His idols were Valenzuela and Orel Hershiser. Mike Brito, who also signed Valenzuela, didn't have much trouble convincing Valdes to sign with his favorite team. Valdes is one of eight children of a rancher who also owns a business in Victoria, which isn't far from Monterrey.

He quit school at 16 to concentrate on baseball but is studying in the off-season for his high school diploma and wants to attend college eventually. He is popular with his The National League's youngest pitcher is able to sleep only about an hour the night before he pitches because he keeps thinking about the batters he will face. An hour before the game, his stomach begins to churn. But when he takes the mound, Ismael Valdes, who won't be 22 until Aug. 21, becomes one of the coolest and calmest Dodgers.

The 6-foot-3, 207-pound right-hander from Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico, has the lowest earned-run average of any Dodger starter (2.68), an excellent strikeout-to-walk ratio (35 to 14 in 43 innings) and high praise from friend and foe. "He does some of the same things Juan Marichal did as a youngster," Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda said. "He has great control and command of three pitches the fastball, the curve and the changeup. He's in terrific physical condition too. He threw as hard in the ninth inning the other night as he did in the first inning." "He reminds me of Doug Drabek," said Dodger catcher Tom Prince, a former Pittsburgh Pirate teammate of Drabek's.

"I absolutely love Valdes," Atlanta Brave Manager Bobby Cox said. "I think he'll be one of the best pitchers in the league if he's not already." First, though, Valdes wants to yiMiiPOTlliyl teammates, particularly Hideo Nomo. Valdes from Mexico and Nomo from Japan have been spotted in the dugout during recent games in the midst of animated conversations. "They must be speaking pitchin' English," Vin Scully said. The Angels are off- to a fast start, but so are former Angels Dante Bichette of Colorado, Mark McLemore of Texas, Gary Gaetti of Kansas City and Devon White of Toronto.

No. 1 draft choice Darin Erstad, a Jamestown, N.D., native, who played baseball and football at Nebraska, wouldn't be the first Angel outfielder from North Dakota. In 1961, rookie Ken Hunt from Grand Forks, N.D., hit 25 home runs for the first Angel team. The same season, another North Dakotan, Roger Maris, hit 61 for the New York Yankees. By GARY KLEIN TIMES STAFF WRITER OMAHA The feeling was fa- miliar for Cal State Fullerton's Mark Kotsay when he stepped to p.the plate with the bases loaded in i the second inning of Monday's game against Tennessee at the 't: College World Series. "Going into that at-bat, I kind of thought about last year," said Kot- say, who as a freshman hit a grand slam against Florida State in the .1994 World Series. "I was thinking about what it felt like last year i when I rounded third base after hitting the ball out." Kotsay got to relive the experience by drilling right-hander R.A. Dickey's first pitch into the left-; field bleachers. The grand slam was one of four hits by Kotsay and the key blow in a six-run inning that helped Fullerton defeat the 11-1, before 8,000.

Top-seeded Fullerton (55-9) is 2-0 in the tournament and has won ,16 consecutive games. The Titans, finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation, are off -until Thursday, when they will play the survivor of an elimination between Tennessee (53-15) and Stanford, an 8-3 winner over Clemson on Monday night. "Today, Cal State Fullerton splayed like the No. 1 team in the country," Tennessee Coach Rod -Delmonico said.

"I was impressed their hitters." It was almost impossible not to be. Fullerton got 16 hits and manufactured several scoring opportu- jiities with bunts. Besides Kotsay, who had a sacrifice bunt in the first inning and is 12 for 21 in two World Series, Fullerton got an outstanding offensive performance from senior Tirst baseman D.C. Olsen. Olsen had spent much of Sunday at the hospital because of a kidney stone.

He passed the stone at 3 a.m. and left the hospital two hours later. Olsen had three hits against Tennessee, including a solo home in the seventh that finished Dickey (14-4). Olsen hit his 14th homer immediately after Fullerton Second baseman Joe Fraser had hit two-run shot, his seventh. "Once I passed the kidney stone, A felt fine," Olsen said, "But I was Teal scared before that." Tony Miranda and C.J.

performance from Jon Ward. Ward (10-3), a 6-foot-6 junior right-hander, gave up one run, four hits and struck out four in seven innings. "This is special because last year I did not get a chance to play in the World Series," said Ward, who last week was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth round of the draft. "It took a lot of hard work to get to this point, so when the team gave me the big lead, I knew what I had to do." Dickey said his task was clear when Kotsay came to bat in the second with the bases loaded and Fullerton leading, 3-1.

But Kotsay had other ideas. "It was a changeup away," Dickey said, "and he hit it like he knew it was coming." The Titans are now in good position to do what no other top-seeded team has done since the current format was adopted in 1988 win the title. One more Fullerton victory will put the Titans in Saturday's championship game. Should they get there, it's likely that Kotsay will be leading the way. Stanford 8, Clemson 3 Freshman right-hander Kyle Peterson (14-1) pitched a complete game as the eighth-seeded Cardinal (40-24) eliminated the fifthTseed-ed Tigers (54-14).

Peterson gave up eight hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Dusty Allen and Steve Carver hit home runs for Stanford, which took advantage of four Clemson errors. College World Scrle Note Junior right-hander BrUa Cooper (7-2) will start today for USC (46-20) in an elimination game against Florida State (53-15). Florida State Coach Hike Martin changed plans and will start left-hander Scooby Morgan (4-2) instead of Ail-American right-hander Jonathan Johnson (12-3), who beat Oklahoma in the Semi-noles' opener on Friday. Tennessee first baseman Todd Helton, who shared Collegiate Baseball magazine's player-of-the-year award with Fullerton's Mark Kotsay, was 0 for 4 against the Titans.

He drove in a run in the first inning with a groundout to second. KIWIS no obligation for private consultation. Ask about our transplant guarantee. Free fact-filled booklet. 00-642-942 PETERSON MEDICAL INSTITUTE A A Medical Corporation I Santa Monica "Diamond Bar Seal Beach Modem's.
