Fletcher, 65, of 338 Cannon died Saturday in the Kent and Queen Anne Hospital, Chester-town. Mr. Fletcher was a member of the Laborers International Union of North America, Wilmington, local 199, and was a construction worker in the Wilmington area, retiring in 1980. A Mason, he was a member of the Thomas H. Kiah Lodge 101 of Rock Hall, Md.

He is survived by his wife, Rosanna; a son, Armond Frazier Fletcher of Van Nuys, three sisters, Viola Fletcher of Pond-town, Isabell Young of Chester-town, and Anna Mae Wright of Wilmington; and two grandchil- dren. Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Pondtown, near Millington, with burial in the adjoining church cemetery. Friends may call at the James United Methodist Church, Cross and Cannon streets, Chestertown, tonight from 7 to 9 p.m.

Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. Rebecca I. Whitehead NORTH EAST, Md. Rebecca I. Whitehead, 75, of 405 E.

Cecil died Wednesday at her home of an apparent heart attack. A native of North East, Mrs. Whitehead was a homemaker. Her husband, Amos, died in 1965. She is survived by a daughter, Anne Whitehead of North East; a stepson, Leon A.

Whitehead of North East; two grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Crouch Funeral Home, 127 S. Main North East, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in North East Methodist Cemetery.

HARTLY An elderly Hartly-area woman injured during the tornado that hit the Kent County town last week has died of those injuries, state police said. Goldie A. Shahan, 78, of R.D. 2, died Wednesday night in Kent General Hospital in "Dover, police said. Police said Mrs.

Shahan was injured July 21 when the tornado rocked her trailer near Hartly and knocked her to the floor. She was admitted to the Dover hospital in critical condition. Mrs. Shahan's death is the second attributed to the tornado. Carol A.

McGinnis, 25, also of near Hartly, was killed when her trailer was destroyed by the strong winds. Francis Sweeny, 72, ran interior design firm of the Sunday school for 17 years. He was a member of the Deacon Board for 36 years and its chairman for 22 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary A. Robinson; seven sons, Webster D.

of Belvidere, Herbert Harold Holian and Wayne all of Wilmington, Gary L. of Ft. Lauderdale, and Paul S. of Memphis, three daughters, Juliauna Mayfield of Claymont, and Myrtha D. Randolph and Marva Z.

Trotter, both of Wilmington; a brother, Norman Trotter of Norfolk, five sisters, Elva Wyatt, Reatha Pascal, and Clara Mays, all of Lawrenceville, Rose Glover of Irvington, N.J., and Bertha Tullis of Union, N.J.; 15 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Services will be Sunday at 8 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, 2616 Carter where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be Monday in Riverview Cemetery. Darryl Vernon Gilbert LAKEVILLE, Pa.

Darryl Vernon Gilbert, 17, who moved to Lakeville two months ago from Delaware, died Sunday in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale of injuries he received in an accident early Sunday morning. According to Pennsylvania State Police, Mr. Gilbert was driving on Route 6 near Lakeville at about 12:30 a.m. when another car apparently swerved into his lane and crashed into his car head-on. Mr.

Gilbert lived until two months ago in Jefferson Farms, near New Castle, Del. He recently finished his junior year at New Castle Baptist Academy. He is survived by his parents, Leigh and Nillagene Gilbert; a sister, Kathy at home; his paternal grandfather, Eldon E. Gilbert of Wilmington, and his paternal grandmother, Doris C. Gilbert of New Windsor, N.Y.; his maternal grandparents, Leo and Iola Golec of his paternal great-grandmother, Blanche Church of Newburg, N.Y.

Memorial services will be Sunday at 5:45 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 901 E. Basin Road, New Castle. Services and burial were Thursday in Pennsylvania. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 901 E.

Basin Road, New Castle 19720. Verona C. Reyam SEAFORD Verona C. Reyam, 82, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday at the Methodist Manor House, Middleford Road. Mrs.

Reyam, who was formerly of Wilmington, had lived at the house for the past 17 years. She was a member of Second Baptist Church on Silverside Road in Wilmington. Her husband, Alfred died in 1956, She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne R. Baker of McDaniel Crest; a sister, Margaret C. Brown of Chincoteague, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, alleyville, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Birowski Marie V. Birowski, 71, of the Episcopal Church Home, Lancaster Pike and Old Wilmington Road for the past three years, formerly of 16 Upland Court, Breezewood, died Thursday at the home of complications from diabetes. Mrs. Birowski's husband, Joseph died in 1971. She is survived by two sons, Joseph F.

Jr. of New Castle and Thomas W. of Breezewood; a daughter, Sharon M. Hayes of Terre Haute, a sister, Irene Wilson of Westmont, and seven grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday morning at 10 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 901 New Road, Elsmere.

Friends may call this evening at the Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads. Entombment will be in Cathedral Cemetery. Holian W. Trotter Holian W. Trotter, 76, of 1502 Upsons Downs road, Ardencroft, died Wednesday in the Delaware Division of an apparent heart attack at home.

Born in Brunswick County, he moved to Claymont in 1932. He retired in 1968 as a trimmer at Phoenix Steel Co. in Claymont, where he worked for 35 years. A member of Union Baptist Church for 51 years, he was superintendent NORTH EAST, Md. G.

Francis Sweeny, 72, of North East, formerly of Seaford, died Wednesday in the Memorial Division, Wilmington, where he had been hospitalized for two months. Mr. Sweeny and his wife owned and operated The Market Place, an interior design firm in North East that they opened in 1968. The grandson of Charles O'Neill, a prominent manufacturer who brought the first jacquard looms from England to America in the Wilmington police veteran Daniel Pennell Jr dies Wilmington man hurt in head-on collision She had lived in the Dover-Hartly area for most of her life. Her husband, Paul died in 1977.

She is survived by seven sons, Norris E. and Paul Jr. of Frederica, Crawford of Felton, Daniel of Houston, Texas, and Joseph', Gamaliel and Levi, all of Hartly; three daughters, Jeanette Case of Jacksonville, Virginia Leager of Kenton and Naomi Hurd of Camden; and a sister, Ethel Sherwood of Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Berry Funeral Home, Main Street, Felton, where friends may call Sunday after 7 p.m. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden 1860s, Mr.

Sweeny continued in the family tradition of textiles and graduated from the Philadelphia Col-1 lege of Art in textile design. He was the last direct descendant of Sir William Rose and Sir John Rose of England. He is survived by his wife, the former Verna "Vee" Logan. Services will be Saturday at IT a.m. at St.

Mary Anne's Episcopal Church in North East. Burial will be in the adjoining church Colwyck Junior High School Parents' Council. He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou; two sons, Frank C. of Dover and Daniel T. Ill of Fort Lauderdale, a brother, Paul of Wilmington; and three grandsons.

White James W. White, 74, of 708 Lehigh Road, Newark, died of congestive heart failure Thursday in S. Francis Hospital. Mr. White retired in 1976 as a carpenter for the Double Construction Co.

in Newark, where he had worked for 10 years. A native of Russell County, he moved to Delaware in the 1950s. His wife, Myrtle, died in 1977. He is survived by nine sons, Claude of Corner Ketch, John, Joe, Carl, Bill and Roger, all of Newark, Arnold and James, both of Dover, and Kenneth of London, two daughters, Roberta Hamm of New Castle and Edna McFarland of Newark; four-brothers, George of Lebanon, Tom of Tazewell, Grilly of Indiana and Trigg of Michigan; three sisters, Scerille Hunt of Abington, Suzie-Tuggle of White Haven, and Irene Cordell of Raving, his granddaughter, Linda Lane, with whom he lived, 34 other grandchildren and 33 greatgrandchildren. "Mickey" Walsh, 84, of 7 Belmont Richardson Park, died of a heart attack Thursday at the Memorial Divison, where he had been hospitalized for two weeks. A native of Wilmington, Mr. Walsh retired in 1963 as a leather worker for the Allied Kid Co. at 11th and Poplar streets, where he had worked for 29 years. He was a lifetime member of the Five Points Volunteer Fire Company.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mary E. Levering; a daughter, Beatrice M. Eckrich, with whom he lived; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday at 10 a.m. at St.

Daniel T. Pennell 61, a 23-year veteran of the Wilmington police, was pronounced dead at the Delaware Division Monday after a heart attack at his home. Upon retirement from the police force as a sergeant in 1968, Mr. Pennell, of 31 Landers Lane, Swanwyck, became chief security officer for the state office building complex in Dover, a job he Mr. Pennell held until 1972.

He then worked as owner and president of Probe Agency a New Castle detective agency. Mr. Pennell was active in Republican politics and ran unsuccessfully against Democrat Calvin McCullough for the 11th senatorial district seat in 1968 and again in 1970. He was a graduate of Salesianum School, a member and former lieutenant-governor of the Kiwanis, Club of Delaware, an executive board member of the Delmarva Council of the Boy Scouts of America Inc. and a member of the Civil Air Patrol.

He also was a YMCA Indian Guide, and past president of the Edwin Charles Howard ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -Edwin Charles Howard, 62, of 107 Colonial Drive, formerly of Monroe Park Apartments, Wilmington, died of cancer Wednesday at the Glynn-Brunswick Memorial Hospital, Brunswick. Mr. Howard retired in 1981 as a chemical engineer with Hercules Brunswick plant after 34 years with the company.

He served in various management positions and locations, including in Mississippi and Oregon. He worked with Hercules in Wilmington for more than 20 years before being transferred to St. Simons in 1978. He was born in Newark, N.J., and reared in Wildwood, N.J. He served as a junior lieutenant in the Navy during World War II.

He received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Washington and was a former member of the American Institue of Chemical Engineers. He attended St. William's Catholic Church in St. Simons Island. He is survived by his wife, Maria a son, Ronald Charles of Pel-ham, a brother, Raymond A.

of Wilmington; and two grandchildren. Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. William's Catholic Church, Frederica Road. Burial will be in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens, St.

I'WM 3 A Wilmington man was seriously Injured early Thursday when his car was struck head-on by a tractor-trailer truck driving in the wrong direction on U.S. 40 west of Bear, state police said. Russell A. Wriston, 21, of the 700 block of W. 11th was admitted to the Delaware Division in serious condition with internal injuries, police said.

Wriston's car was struck about 2:45 a.m. as he drove west on U.S. 40 near Greenfield Manor Apartments. Police said the car was hit by a truck driv)en east in the westbound lanes of U.S. 40 by James O.

Tyson, 44, of Wilson, N.C. Tyson had driven about a quarter-mile in the wrong direction on U.S. 40 after leaving Peggy's Truck Stop and the Triple Nickel Saloon, police said. A passenger in Wriston's car, Richard Marion, 18, of the 200 block Rosemont Rosemont, was treated at the Delaware Division for minor cuts. Tyson was charged with second-degree criminal assault and was committed to Gander Hill Prison in lieu of $25,000 bond.

Bridge leaping suspected; search to continue today An interstate truck driver reported seeing a man jump from the eastbound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridges early Thursday, a bridge spokesman said. The trucker, who has not been identified, reported the incident to a toll collector on the New Jersey Turnpike about 4:30 a.m. and then drove on, according to spokesman Edwin Golin. Bridge police found a car with Delaware registration abandoned in the eastbound lanes of the bridge. Golin said there was no note left in the car.

The Holloway Terrace, Goodwill of New Castle and Delaware City fire companies searched the river with the Wilmington Fire Department boat throughout the day, but without success. Investigators said the search would continue today. Two teen-agers arrested in connection with beating Two New Castle County teenagers have been arrested and charged with assault in connection with the beating last weekend of a younger youth in the Glasgow Trailer Court, New Castle County police said. The victim underwent emergency surgery Sunday to have his spleen removed. Police said Frankie Spivey, 17, of the 200 block Jocelyn Glasgow Trailer Court, and John 15, of the unit block Jay Drive, Chelsea Estates, were charged with first- Police degree assault and conspiracy.

Both youths were committed to the Bridge House juvenile detention center, police said. Police said two youths assaulted Kenneth R. Jester, 14, of the 100 block Hedgewick Drive, Glasgow Pines, about 4 p.m. Saturday, outside a trailer at Edinburg and Glasgow drives. Investigators said the fight apparently started after some name-calling.

Jester left the trailer to go home, police said, and the pair followed him outside, continuing to argue. Jester tried to leave on his bicycle, but the two older youths seized him and began beating him, police said. Police said another youth stopped the fight, and Jester went to his home. Jester complained of abdominal pains Sunday morning and was taken to the Newark Emergency Room and later transferred to the Delaware Division in Wilmington for emergency surgery. Trucker prevents woman from leaving for an hour A 22-year-old woman was held captive for about an hour early Wednesday morning by a tractor-trailer truck driver from whom she accepted a ride on U.S.

40, state police said. Police said Patricia R. Dooley, 22, was walking east on U.S. 40 around 4 a.m. Wednesday from her home in the Fairwinds Trailer Park, near Bear, when the trucker pulled over and offered her ride.

Dooley, who was bound for New Castle, accepted the offer. Police said the trucker tried to persuade Dooley to ride with him to Pennsylvania, but she refused, Dooley was unable to escape from the moving truck. The trucker continued driving east on U.S. 40 and onto Interstate 95 northbound towards Pennsylvania, police said. Police said Dooley tried to escape when the trucker stopped at a rest area off the interstate highway, just north of the Delaware state line, but the man stopped her and hit her several times.

Dooley tried to flee a second time and was able to run to another truck parked in the lot for help. The trucker fled when Dooley approached the second truck. Police said the trucker told the woman he made regular trips through Delaware hauling furniture from South Carolina to Pennsylvania. Dooley refused treatment for minor injuries. RENT A MO.
