WBBG, the last Cleveland station to regularly offer big-band sounds, ceased to exist at midnight. It's still around in name, but it has been reduced to carrying the same signal, as sister station WMJI (105.7-FM), which plays rock music. That means Lanigan, WMJI's popular morning man, will also be carried on the AM band.

WBBG died because a $1.9 million deal between buyer Larry Robinson and Cincinnati-based Jacor Communications fell through this week. Jacor and Robinson announced the sale in July. The necessary papers were filed with the Federal Communications Commission, and the sale was expected to have closed within 90 days. When the deal collapsed, Jacor decided to pull the plug. Over the years it has gotten harder and harder to find big-band music on the radio.

Now it will be almost impossible in some portions of the Beacon Journal circulation area. Aficionados must now attempt to get CKLW (800-AM) in Canada, WNCO (1340-AM) in Ashland or WRKG (1380-AM) in Lorain. "WBBG was very successful," said WMJIWBBG general manager Connie Edelman. "Unfortunately, with the older demographics (of its audience), advertising support was not sufficient to warrant continuation of the format." She said she was not part of the negotiations and did not know which party called off the deal. Robinson, the one-time "diamond man," did not return phone calls by press time.

Jacor president Frank Wood was en route from Cincinnati to New York and was unavailable for comment. WBBG generally finished in the top 10 in the Cleveland ratings book. In Akron, where it suffered from a weak signal, it normally ranked about 18th. Robinson is chief executive officer of the Robinson Group, a venture capital and management-consulting firm that specializes in sales training. He sold WBBG and WMJI to Jacor in 1984.

Both Broyles and executive producer and writer John Sacret Young, say their project is being considered for airing after the Super Bowl. "The main characters are women who went to help, to save lives, not to kill. These women are heroes, and they've really been neglected," said Broyles, who served in Vietnam in 1969-70 with the Marines. BUCKLE UP It's Recycle Ohio Month! DISPOSABLE INCOME.

When one studies their advertising over an extended period of time, it becomes evident that they are involved in a protracted policy of price-cutting. "How," the wise consumer might ask," are they able to do this?" Are they accepting smaller profit margins on fine equipment, and heoce offering genuine value to the musical connoisseur, or should they be regarded with healthy skepticism?
