KATS it it APFHOTI By Hank Lowenkron ASSOCIATf PMSS "'A rare appearance on Monday Night Football provides Indianapolis and San Diego with an opportunity to reconstruct sagging images. Chargers coach. Bobby Ross is bringing Stan Humphries back as his starting quarterback in an attempt to turn things around. "Humphries is 100 percent," said Ross, who has started John Friesz I toe past six games after it was de-! cjded a preseason shoulder injury w)as limiting Humphries. "We tried to play him through the first four games.

In two of those games, we brought in Friesz. He was really struggling. His shoulder was bothering him quite a bit," Ross said of Humphries, who has completed 70 of 149 passes for 739 yards, with seven interceptions and three touchdowns. "He just hasn't had the zip on the ball that he normally has. It's Back now." Meanwhile, Indianapolis coach Ted Marchibroda is hoping his team can find a way to get into the end zone.

The Colts have only 10 touchdowns after 30 trips inside their opponents' 20-yard line and have failed to get a tpuchdown nine times when they had a flrst-and-goal. In last Sunday's 23-9 loss in Buffalo, Indianapolis had five first downs inside the 17 and settled for three field goals. "We are not playing opportunistic football. You must take full advan- game that we're a better football team than, what we've been playing, and we're getting better every week," he said. "Hopefully, it will all come together." Statistically, it's difficult to give either team an edge.

The Chargers are 23rd among the league's 28 teams in total defense, second in rushing defense, 27th in pass defense. They are 23rd overall in offense. Indianapolis is 11th in total offense, 27th in total defense. "Since it's a Monday night game and it's going to be televised nationally, we can gain a lot of respect. We can let people see the real Colts," said linebacker Jeff Herrod, who is the third leading tackier for the Colts despite missing the opening two games with a dislocated ankle.

"We have a lot of ability, talent, and we want to show that we're a pretty good team." Ross said both the offense and defense deserve the blame for the losing record. "Offensively, we haven't played well. Nor have we played well defensively, but I really expected us defensively to be just a little bit better," Ross said. It figures to be more difficult on Monday. Defensive end Burt Grossman had arthroscopic surgery after last week's 12-7 loss to the Los Angeles Raiders.

"The frustration has been that we've not gotten off the field like we need to." Ross said of the defense. LAKE FOREST, El. (AP) The Chicago Bears are back in contention for the NFL playoffs, something that even coach Dave Wannstedt can no longer deny. The Bears have won three victories on the road in 12 days, including Sunday's 10-6 victory at Detroit, lifting them to within one game of the first-place Lions in the NFC Central Division. "How we did it, home and away, didn't affect me," Wannstedt said Friday.

"It's a real credit to the players and the assistant coaches from the standpoint of having the willingness to be prepared to get it done to implement a good game plan in a short amount of time and do what needs to be corrected." The Bears opened the season with two losses before winning three in a row. Then three straight losses including two at home all but knocked them out of serious contention considering they had to hit the road for three games against heavily favored opponents. Then it happened. A 16-13 upset at San Diego followed by a 19-17 win at Kansas City. Four days later came the win at Detroit.

That put the Bears at 6-5, one game behind the 7-4 Lions. Since 1983, 52 teams in the NFL have played three road games in a row. The Bears became only the fourth to win all three. But from all indications, none of the others did it in a 12-day span. Wannstedt previously has refused to speculate on the chances of a playoff berth for the Bears.

But on Friday, he gave the Bears a well-earned weekend off before preparations begin for their next game, a return match with the Green Bay Packers at home a week from Sunday. A victory then could lift the Bears into a possible first-place tie. "It's great to be in this situation," said Wannstedt. "Every game is big and every game now keeps getting bigger as they come up." tage of each scoring chance in this league, and we not getting the job done in those situations," Marchibroda said. "That is a key reason we.

are not winning." The way things have been going for both teams, producers and announcers may be challenged to keep an audience. The Chargers, playing a nationally televised Monday game for the first time since 1986, are 4-6, with losses in five of their past seven games. Indianapolis (3-7) has lost three straight and six of its last seven heading into its first Monday date since Nov. 5, 1991. "I think players are more ready to play.

Monday night is something special," Marchibroda said. "It is something to look forward to. I like them. I think they're sort of a reward for something you may have done previously." Marchibroda says the game gives the Colts a chance to demonstrate the team's record is misleading. "It's our feeling going into the Chicago Bears defensive lineman Trace Armstrong celebrates after recovering a fumble against the Detroit Lions.

Although the defense that keeps improving every week has been a big factor in the team's success, Wannstedt said the Bears will give equal time to offense, defense and the special teams in preparation for Green Bay, a team they lost to 17-3 last month. "We're going to take a couple of days off and get away from it all," said Wannstedt. "Then we'll get into our regular routine. We'll make decisions and evaluate as we go along. The last couple of weeks, things have started to settle in." Especially on defense.

After the opening 26-20 loss to the New York Giants when they were ranked 24th in the league, the Bears have climbed the ladder gradually and were fifth after the Kansas City win. That could improve after this weekend's games since the Bears limited the Lions to 230 total yards, their best effort of the season. BUSTER'S CAR CARE 1195 N. The compliments are starting to return, even from the opposition. Steelers cornerback Rod Woodson knocked Moon out of the game with a concussion in their last meeting, but he still had high praise for the Oilers quarterback.

Woodson watched Moon's struggles earlier in the season and admired the quarterback's ability to stay the course. "So many things happened and the quarterback gets the blame," Woodson said. "To put all the blame on Warren earlier in the year was unjustified. He's proved that he should be the starter. JOHN'S SPIRITS FINE WINES HOUSTON (AP) The past won't go away for Warren Moon.
