The new one-hour shows are "The Wizard of Elm Street," a fantasy-adventure about a man with great powers of imagination and invention, "Kay O'Brien, Surgeon," a drama about a second-year surgical resident at a New York City hospital and "Downtown," about a tough Los -Angeles cop who supervises four parolees. CBS was hurting for new programming.

Of all the shows introduced last season, only one by CBS finished in the list of Top 10 new shows CBS Sunday Night Of the 16 returning series, 10 will have new time slots. Canceled shows include "Hometown," "Stir Crazy," "Charlie "George Burns Comedy Week," "Airwolf," "Crazy Like a Fox," "Trapper John, M.D." "Fast Times," "Tough Cookies," "Foley's Square," "Morning Star-Evening Star," "Leo Liz in Beverly Hills," and "Bridges to Cross." NBC recently finished first in the A.C. Nielsen Co. ratings for the 1985-86 prime-time season, marking the first time the network won the ratings competition. NEW YORK (UPI) CBS, which finished second behind NBC this season for the first time in ratings history, launched its comeback attack Wednesday by unveiling seven new series for the fall season.

Four half-hour comedies and three one-hour dramas will join 16 returning series in the CBS fall lineup, Kim Le Masters, CBS vice president-programs, said in a statement Series that were canceled include "Alrwolf," "Crazy Like a Fox," and "Trapper John, M.D," a CBS mainstay since 1979. Those returning include three of the top-rated shows on television, "Murder, She Wrote," "60 Minutes," and "Dallas." "The Equalizer," a new series that has floundered in the ratings, will be given another chance. To counter floundering ratings in the "Mary" series, CBS said a new Mary Tyler Moore series is being prepared for future broadcast.
