State Rep. J. Benjamin Ewing Jr. isn't as forceful as the late B. Bradford Barnes.

There, you've heard it: The worst each candidate for the 35th state representative district seat is saying about the other. Incumbent Ewing points out he, unlike Hatfield, is retired, which he says make him more accessible. Hatfield, though, promises to be a "full-time legislator," taking off work when necessary. Hatfield notes Ewing won office last year with the slogan "Continue the Tradition," a promise to follow in the footsteps of Barnes, whose death prompted a special election. But Hatfield says Ewing didn't follow Barnes' example of quickly gaining prominence in the legislature.

Ewing, however, points to the completion of a new library building in Greenwood and improvements to several district roads as evidence he has carried out Barnes' pet projects. They don't disagree on much else. In their relatively friendly, largely issue-free race, each reflects the conservative viewpoint that helped keep 'Barnes popular with local voters through four victorious campaigns. Ewing has an advantage in being recognized as a close friend of Barnes. "We went everywhere together," he said this week.

"We went out to dinner twice a week." Hatfield, making his first try for public office, has connections in each of the three main geo- restructured so that elderly persons pay according to income, not real estate assessment. He accuses the Department of Natural Resources and. Environmental Control of treating the typical rural resident "like a jack ass" when a home sewage-treatment permit is sought. He noted many residents are saddled with state-approved septic systems that are malfunctioning. Ending such problems should be a top environmental priority, he said.

His late father, Lester Hatfield, was mayor of Farmington for 29 years. His mother, Frances, is a director of the Delaware State Fair. He credits them with inspiring his own community service. "I think voters will stop and look at Ron Hatfield and the Bridgeville Lions Club, the Bridgeville Little League and all my hard work and involvement in the community," he said.

Hatfield said he would use his clout as a legislator to try to bring an industrial park to the district. He also would seek day care for the elderly and attempt to withhold driving privileges from 16- and 17-year-olds who drop out of school. Surplus state funds, he said, should be spent on road repairs.
