It was the television station that again and again had to push back its debut. It was the ril-believe-it-when-I-see-it channel. The expectation was that WOIO-Ch.

19, Geveland's third and newest independent station, would stumble onto the Northeast Ohio television scene like weekend softballers trying to play in the major leagues. Armed with old programs, they were going to fight for a piece of the country's 11th largest TV market an extremely competitive market that had an NBC-owned station (WKYC-Ch. 3), two ABC affiliates (WEWS-Ch. 5 and WAKR-Ch. 23).

a CBS affiliate (WJKW-Ch. 8), two PBS stations (WVIZ-Ch. 25 and WNEO-Ch. 45WEAO-Ch. 49) and four independents (WDLI-Ch.

17, WUAB-Ch. 43, WCLQ-Ch. 61 and WOAC-Ch. 67). Yeah, well, try not to embarrass yourselves, fellows.

WOIO president Hubert Payne and his team showed up to play, however, and the early returns weren't just good they were fabulous. "That was a given in our planning," Affe said. "It certainly helps that many don't have the option of cable. Absolutely, we wanted to get some attention with it was in operation only 10 days (three were the Memorial Day weekend) when the May ratings period came to a close. It was on just a small number of the area cable systems. Although WOIO executives did opt for a schedule dominated by re-runs, money and thought were spent on the selections. Old network series like Mork and Mindy and Happy Days delivered viewers advertisers liked adults 18-54.
