C12 The BfMT-n Journal rrirl.tv April 8. 1383 TELEVISION Baseball and show biz all the same to soap star TAer grumble about how professional baseball has become nothing but show business? John Beradino, a regular on Genera Hospital since the ABC soap opera premiered in April 1963, can tell you something about that. In 1948, the year the Cleveland Indians won their last World Series. Beradino (then Berardino) was the team's utility infielder. "I felt it was like entertainment even back when I was playing," Beradino said Thursday during an interview at ABC affiliate WEWS-Ch.

5 in Cleveland. "You're performing on a stage in front of an audience. You get the applause when you do well. You get booed when you perform badly." Television, however, has made instant stars of baseball players. When a leg injury ended Beradino's career in 1953, Hollywood studios weren't lining up with contracts for ex-major leaguers.

"With the constant exposure of television, today's players go right from the playing field to a movie set," said Beradino, who plays Dr. Steve Hardy on Gen- "My folks thought I was going to be another child star," Beradino said. "The timing was off by about 30 years." His major-league career started in 1939 with the St. Louis Browns, and, except for a four-year stint with the Navy during World War II, he stayed with that team until 1947. "The St.

Louis Browns finished in seventh place in 1947," he said, "and, in the fall of '47, I was traded to the Washington Senators, who had finished eighth." Rather than sign with an even worse team, Beradino, who was working with acting coaches and the Pasadena Playhouse between seasons, announced he would quit baseball for a career in Hollywood. Enter master baseball showman Bill Veeck, who persuaded Beradino to play for Veeck's Cleveland Indians. "I signed for the money," Beradino said. "Bill offered to double my salary and gave me a bonus. "Bill didn't need me," Beradino said.

"He just heard that Detroit was interested in me and he didn't want them to get me. After two seasons with the Indians, Beradino was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He went from Pittsburgh back to St. Louis, then back to Geveland for the '52 season, ending his career in '53 with Pittsburgh with a lifetime .249 major-league batting average. Although Beradino had hoped to be on hand for tonight's Indians home opener, his schedule ruled out that possibility.

Still, Thursday's visit was a time to take note of anniversaries: 40 years since the Indians won the World Series and 25 years since General Hospital premiered. He has received three Emmy nominations. Which has given him the greater satisfaction, a strong acting performance or hitting a home run? A gentle smile and a pause preceded his answer. "Oh, hitting a home run," said Beradino, who pounded out 36 major-league homers. "That sweet stroke, huh?" Mark Dawidziak is the Beacon Journal's television writer.

Mark Davvidziak eral Hospital and will be 71 years old on May 1. "That wasn't there when I left baseball. Like any other actor, I had to suffer the tortures of the damned and struggle for the breaks. "But I think that made me a better actor because I had to work harder for it. If it comes too easy, you don't learn your craft.

You're more inclined to sell yourself than your abilities. You're not an actor. You're just being yourself." Acting was a goal long before visions of baseball diamonds danced in his head. Growing up in Los Angeles, Beradino was an extra a day and a box in several Our Gang comedies filmed at Hal Roach Studios.
