EAST CANTON 52, LAKE 4 Baseball's Grimes dies from cancer Burleigh Grimes, a Hall of Fame pitcher whose career as player, manager and coach spanned six decades, died of cancer in Clear Lake, last Friday at the age of 92. Grimes pitched for 19 years in the major leagues and compiled a record of 270 victories and 212 losses. He pitched for Pittsburgh, the Brooklyn Dodgers, the New York Yankees and New York Giants, the Boston Braves, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs.

When baseball outlawed the spitball in 1920, an exception was made for 17 pitchers then in the major leagues who depended on the spitter for their livelihood. Grimes was one of them and he was the last legal spitball pitcher because he pitched until he was 42. He was known as a fierce competitor, a pitcher who frightened hitters. He walked with a swagger that infuriated batters, and when he measured a hitter from the mound he would peel back his lips to show yellow teeth in a snarl. He often threw at the batters' heads without the slightest hesitation.

Grimes was a 20-game winner five times and pitched in four World Series. He was the senior member on the staff of the Cardinals when they won pennants in 1930 and 1931. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1964. Grimes managed the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1937 and '38. More baseball Designated hitter Hal McRae, 39, signed a 1-year, $650,000 contract with the Kansas City Royals that amounted to a $150,000 cut in salary.

Football Senior safety Steve Fitzhagh from Walsh High was named Miami University's top defensive player for 1985. Fitzhugh had 104 total hits this past season 61 solo tackles and 43 assists. He also intercepted three passes. Texas coach Jackie Sherrill scheduled then canceled a news conference where he was to respond to alleged recruiting violations outlined in a Dallas Times Herald series. A university statement said allegations of payments from alumni to top players in the form of weekly allowances, car deals, performance payments and signing incentives contained "numerous errors." Oklahoma State coach Pat Jones said he will decide by Wednesday whether to remain as coach of the Cowboys or accept a similar job at Pitt if it is offered.

Jones was interviewed for the Pitt job last weekend. Veteran Middle Tennessee coach Boots Donnelly, who led the Blue Raiders to the NCAA 14 7 14 IS 13 I 14 fast Canton Lalre EAST CANTON Sharp 5-0-10. Harris 1-0-7. Heiveroth 1-1-3, Griffith 12-1-25, Bovle 4-4-B. Totals: 23-4-52.

West Virginia coach Don Nehien said he was looking into a radio station news report that nine current and former members of his team were involved in a weekend melee at a bar in Morgantown, W.Va., that left three people injured. Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Bryan Hin-kle will be lost for the remainder of the season with a fractured right elbow, injured in the first quarter of Sunday's game against San Diego. Los Angeles Rams running back Eric Dick erson agreed to a contract extension (1987-89) that will pay him about $1 million a year.

Boxing The American Medical Association is considering proposals to condemn the U.S. Olympic Committee's support of boxing and calling for the elimination of the sport in college. Heavyweight Gerry Cooney and four of his companions were arrested in Harrisburg, after a scuffle in a hotel bar that left one member of his group knocked out by an off-duty police officer. Cooney was charged with disorderly conduct and released. Other sports Jake Nevtn, Villanova's athletic trainer for more than a half-century, died after a long battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.

He was 75. Former Indiana University star Landon Tomer, partially paralyzed from a 1981 car accident, signed an out-of-court settlement with the Ford Motor Co. Terms were not announced. Turner's suit claimed the roof of his 1973 Ford LTD gave no protection when the car overturned. George Ganldlng, owner of Darby Downs thoroughbred track in Columbus, said he plans to sell the track in January to a group headed by concessions manager Don Mutnlck that includes Bill Konyha of Medina.
