C7 Sunday, September 14. 1980 Akrun Beacon Journal CO. LLSGEF for 0, Itw mat of tim hio State as only ter lNes Ohio State Jack Patterson COLUMBUS Frank Maloney looked like a man standing at the bottom of a volcano, knowing there was no way for him to escape the lava flow that was pouring down upon him. His Syracuse Orangemen had led the nation's No. 1 rated college football team, Ohio State, by 21-9 at halftime, and earlier by 21-3.

But Maloney was certainly not about to light a victory cigar at intermission. "We played a great game," he said after Ohio State outscored the Orangemen 22-0 in the second half for a 31-21 comeback win. "But I think all those people up in the stands (86,643) could see it coming in the second half. "Ohio State is so big and strong," said the Syracuse coach. "It's almost impossible to defense them across the field.

It's the fastest team I've ever holes in Ohio State's middle in taking its surprising first half lead. The Syracuse offensive line took huge liberties with Ohio State middle guard Reggie Echols early on. Echols, a senior but a walk-on when he came to Ohio State, was starting because regular middle guard Tim Sawicki still hasn't cleared summer school academics. But Ohio State coach Earle Bruce inserted junior Mark Sullivan late in the first half and Sullivan plugged the middle admirably to enable the Buckeyes to regroup and launch their comeback. "Obviously," said Bruce afterwards, "we're not as solid at some positions as people thought we were.

Taking nothing away from (Joe Morris, we missed an awful lot of tackles in that first half." MORRIS, ZEROING in on all Syra cuse rushing records, gained 150 yards on the day with 102 coming in the Orangemen's stunning first half. "Sullivan did quite a job of shoring up the middle," said Bruce. "And you must remember that he only started to practice with us a week ago." Sullivan, too, had academic problems but got the green light recently. Last year, he was Sawicki's backup man. "I was pleased," said Bruce, "that the team accepted our situation at half-time with poise.

No, there was no screaming or hollering. We made some adjustments to counteract all the formations Syrcause was throwing at us." TAILBACK CAL MURRAY led Ohio State with 117 yards in 18 carries but after that, quarterback Art Schlichter was most productive on the ground with 71 yards in 12 attempts. Defensively, linebacker Marcus Ma-rek led the way with 16 tac kle participations while tackle Chris Riehm (Medina Highland) had 11 and outside linebacker Keith Ferguson 10. Schlichter, early-season favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, came out of the game with a bruised thigh but said it was nothing to worry about. He was all smiles about his two-point conversion pass to Ricky Johnson on which Schlichter scrambled all the way back to the 22-yard line before releasing the ball.

"It was fun," he smiled. "You know me, I love to scramble." On this Saturday, Schlichter had a lot of company in that department. All of the Buckeyes had to scramble to pull out what was supposed to be a rout. coached against and I'm not sure they won't be the best and quickest team we'll face this year. "You can't run the perimeter against them because they are so fast," said Maloney.

"We felt if they were suspect anywhere it was in the middle and we had good success there for awhile. But like all great teams, they adjusted." SALE OPEN DAILY 10-10 SUNDAYS 11-6 Associated Press ANN ARBOR, Mich. Sophomore quarterback Rich Hewlett threw a pair of touchdown passes to wide receiver Anthony Carter to lead Michigan to a 17-10 Big Ten victory over three-touchdown underdog Northwestern Saturday. Northwestern marched 41 yards in nine plays early in the fourth quarter and fullback Dave Mishler plunged 1 yard for a touchdown to pull the Wildcats into a 10-10 tie before a stunned crowd of 100,824 in Michigan Stadium. The Wolverines got a break moments later, however, when co-captain Andy Cannavino fell on a Kenny Watkins fumble at the Northwestern 23. Three plays later, Hewlett found Carter alone and connected for the winning touchdown pass.

Purdue 12, Wisconsin MADISON, Wis. Mark Herrmann passed for 347 yards to set up field goals of 30, 48, 19 and 40 yards by Rick Anderson, leading 20th-ranked Purdue to victory over Wisconsin. Herrmann, who had a sprained thumb and didn't play in the Boilermakers' season-opening 31-10 loss to Notre Dame a week earlier, picked apart Wisconsin's defense by completing 27 of 43 passes. Herrmann, who injured a leg and was helped from the field with 1:28 to play, completed 13 passes to split end Bart Burrell for 190 yards. Iowa 16, Indiana 7 BLOOMTNGTON, Ind.

Sophomore Jeff Brown rushed for 176 yards, including a 55-yard run to set up Iowa's clinching touchdown in the fourth quarter, as the Hawkeyes beat Indiana. The Hawkeyes scored twice in the final minute of the second quarter to lead 9-0 before the Hoosiers scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Tim Clifford to Nate Lundy early in the fourth quarter. Iowa quarterback Phil Suess then hit Keith Chappelle on a 14-yard pass and Brown on a 10-yarder before the 5-foot-6, 156-pound running back broke loose to the Indiana three. Brown, who carried the ball 31 times, then ran two more yards before fullback Dean McKillip went over the Indiana line for the touchdown. Illinois 20, Michigan St.

17 CHAMPAIGN, HI. Illinois' Mike Bass kicked a 38-yard field goal as time ran out to give the Illini a victory over Michigan State. The Spartans had tied the score a few minutes earlier on Morten Andersen's 35-yard field goal, but Illinois quarterback Dave Wilson guided his team into position for Bass' second field goal, in the final seconds. Former East high receiver Ted Jones, a sophomore, caught 10 passes for 85 yards for the Spartans. Minnesota 38, Ohio U.

11 MINNEAPOLIS Freshman quarterback Tim Salem completed 13 straight passes and Garry White scored three touchdowns as Minnesota whipped Ohio University. Salem, son of Coach Joe Salem, completed 13 of 16 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown in his college debut. Salem had his first collegiate pass intercepted by John Gamble. That interception led to a 7-yard touchdown run by Ohio's Tony Carifa. Salem's second pass fell incomplete, but he connected on his next 13 before the string was halted by another interception late in the fourth quarter.

Marion Barber added 126 yards rushing for Minnesota, including 57 yards on the Gophers' second drive, which Salem capped with an 8-yard touchdown run to tie the score. ww ik -v fM- mu ltVfcfc tr f- saving T5T971 jj 1 Polar Ltd. "But they kept us alive," said Bruce while noting that Janakiev-ski's heroics earned him the game ball. Then came the second half and the Buckeyes' fortunes changed.

"They simply wore us down," said Syracuse coach Frank Maloney. "The heat got to us. It was hotter than anything we've had in Syracuse this year. We tried to confuse them with different formations and a lot of motion. It worked for a while but they are so big and strong they just started knocking us around in the second half." The big Buckeye comeback started only six plays into the third quarter when Schlichter stepped back and found Donley with his 47-yard scoring pass, a touchdown which gave Donley the Ohio State career record for scoring catches with 10.

The next time Ohio State got the ball it went 81 yards to score on Ricky Johnson's 4-yard run and finally take the lead, 22-21 with 4:08 gone in the third period. Schlichter made it 24-21 with a two-point conversion pass to Johnson on a play where the Heisman Trophy candidate scrambled all the way back to the 22-yard line before firing the strike. SYRACUSE WAS FLAT after that, almost as if the Orangemen could read the writing on the wall. Just to make sure, Ohio State added a final touchdown with 1:39 to play on a 10-yard scamper by Schlichter. 1 Continued from page CI didn't look as good as folks expected us to but I think all the players feel that this game gave us confidence.

Now we know early in the season we can come from behind and win." Said Schlichter, "I'm just happy we won. The first game is for mistakes. We moved the ball all day and we stopped ourselves more than Syracuse stopped us. But it wasn't a fluke that they almost beat us. They played well." INDEED THE ORANGEMEN did, at least in the first half.

They took the opening kickoff and went 80 yards to score in eight plays. Tailback Joe Morris, who ended with 150 yards rushing, led the way. Quarterback Dave Warner completed the drive on a 21-yard touchdown pass off a screen to tight end Tony Sidor. If the huge crowd was shaken then, it was absolutely stunned just moments later. Schlichter elected to pass on Ohio State's first play and threw a dud right into the hands of Syracuse's Ike Bogosian at the Buckeye 21.

Bogosian returned to the Ohio State 4 and, three plays later, Warner threw a scoring pass to tight end Chris Jilleba and the Orangmen had a 14-0 lead with just 5:50 elapsed. Goodbye No. 1 rating and dreams of a national title, right? NO, BUT THINGS certainly didn't look encouraging when Syracuse scored another touchdown at the start of the second period on an 80-yard drive capped by Warner's 1-yard plunge.
