The act allows divorcing couples to split property acquired during a marriage. The act is based on community property concepts in which a spouse who is not the principal wage earner in the family usually the wife is considered as contributing equally to the household and deserving of equal benefits.

"They don't act in a democratic way," Blankenbaker said after the committee hearing. "When something like this happens, it blows my mind." Keeler said he will issue a report in -the coming weeks detailing testimony during the summer study committee and including any comments members want to make. The vote would have been to adopt a recommendation that the Legislature pass a marital property bill similar to one that was approved by the Senate in the 1985 session. "It's an issue that's going to be in-" traduced regardless" of a datum, Keeler said. Asked whether a full committee could, have been convened later to take a vote, Keeler said it would be costly and inconvenient.

"We'll be right back with it (nest session)," Sen. Virginia Blanken-baker, R-Indianapolis, said. "We hope citizens will let their representatives and senators know they are interested in the bill being passed." The marital property act study committee met apparently for the last time Wednesday, but the panel's chairman refused to allow a vote on recommended legislation, saying too few members were present. "I thought it was premature to vote on it at that time," Rep.

John S. Keeler, R-Indianapolis, said. Only seven of the committee's 12 members were present at the vote, and passing a recommendation to the Legislature on what was expected to be a close vote would not be viewed well, Keeler added. But state officials apparently are trying to stop the marchers before they get to the Statehouse doors. The Citizens Action Coalition Wednesday said it is organizing a caravan of cars, buses, and vans to the Statehouse next Thursday, when leaders including Gary Mayor Richard G. Hatcher hope to meet with the governor and discuss poor relief problems.

They said they want to urge Gov. Robert D. Orr to help the thousands of poor people in Lake County in general and Calumet Township poor relief recipients in particular who are plagued by a financial crisis in the township trustee's office. Deputy Chief Ron Taylor declared Tuesday's blaze an accident that took place in a hidden space between the wall of a store and a historic landmark.

He said the fire probably began burning before smoke was noticed and firefighters were called around noon. An inspection would not have dis covered the problem because it was hidden with no way to get at it, Taylor said. The body of Beth Ann Brewer, 21, was found in the rear of Brewer's Re-laxer Shop, a store owned by her family. The shop was destroyed in the blaze and two nearby businesses were heavily damaged by water and smoke. The wiring was in a small area that separated the store from a converted old opera house where Buffalo Bill is said to have performed in the 1890s.
