D2 Akron Beacon Journal Tuesday, August 20, 1985 -BIG Cavs Anderson proves he can score NBA Terry wl mi to take its football season tickets off the market by Aug. 1, figuring no more would be sold once the point-shaving trial started. Bernard King's recovery from serious knee surgery has been slow and the Knicks will be happy if he's back in action by mid-season. Eastern Michigan's 6-3 guard Fred Cofleld so impressed Knick coach Hubie Brown that Brown is reportedly ready to deal Darrell Walker, a 6-5 defensive whiz. Chris Harrison, a Garfield High product, will be in camp with Utah.

The Lakers obtained the Suns' Maurice Lucas to replace Bob McAdoo, who was released. The Suns didn't want to pay Lucas' $650,000 contract. Ohio State product Granville Walters is trying out with Houston. After losing several recruits to southern colleges, Nevada-Las Vegas coach Jerry Tarkanlan said, "I had one coach complain to me that most of the Southeastern Conference schools are over the salary cap." Rich Rollins has been named president of C.C. Management, the parent company of the Cavs and the Coliseum.

A former Twins and Indians third baseman, Rollins has held several positions in the Cavs front office. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has sold the rights to his diary for this season to Random House. It was a 6-figure deal. Manute Bol, the 7-7 and 195-pound center, is expected to sign a guaranteed 2-year contract worth $150,000 annually with Washington. He was the Bullets' second-round pick.

Boston and the Clippers continue to talk about a Cedric Maxwell-for Bill Walton deal, but they seem to be making little progress. season, the Cavs must be willing to endure his growing pains if they play him 20 minutes a game. That also means the Cavs will pass on Davis. But if they sign the more-experienced Davis, Anderson's development will be hindered and he might not even be on the roster. The answer to the Davis-Anderson question will say a lot about the Cavs' philosophy for this season.

If they sign Davis, it means they are gunning hard to win now. If they go with Anderson, it indicates they are still building. TWENTY CAVS games will be televised on WUAB-TV (Channel 43) this season, beginning with the Oct. 25 season-opener in Chicago. Jack Corrigan is expected to return as one of the announcers.

Nev Chandler, who did the games last year, is only a longshot to return because of his commitment to Channel 5 sports. Chandler may be replaced by one of two former Cavs, Jim Chones or Luke Witte. Witte is believed to have the in side track because he has done radio color commentary for some high schools and colleges in the Alliance area. NOTEBOOK After dealing Whatley to the Cavs and releasing Wes Matthews, Chicago needs a point guard. Bulls coach Stan Albeck talks about playing Michael Jordan at the point, "because nothing but good things happen when he has the ball." No one takes that kind of talk seriously and Albeck is expected to sign free-agent guard Johnny Moore.

Former Cav Darren Xltlls will play in Italy again this season. Franklin Edwards, Tillis' former teammate at Cleveland State, is going to camp with the Clippers and has a good shot at making the team. Former UCLA center Swen Nater is trying to make a comeback with the Clippers. Michael Wilson, who was on a 10-day contract with the Cavs last season, also is in camp with the Clippers. Barberton's Alvin Robertson will serve as a guest conductor for the San Antonio Symphony.

The Spurs guard is a reggae music fan and he gets to pick the music for the symphony. Maybe it'll be the greatest hits of Jimmy Cliff. Mitchell Wiggins, a 6-4 guard much admired by the Cavs, has been placed on the trading block by Houston. The Rockets would like a backup big man in return. That's something the Cavs might be able to spare, especially if the bribery charges against Williams are dropped.

Speaking of Williams. Tulane has received such adverse publicity from the case that it decided Ron Anderson's explosion in the Los Angeles summer league has made life interesting for Cavaliers general manager Harry Weltman and coach George Karl. Anderson was second in the most valuable player voting to the Lakers' Byron Scott. In his last three games, Anderson sizzled for 39, 41 and 45 points. Karl saw one game in which Anderson was 21-for-26 from the floor.

"A very strong case could have been made for Anderson as the MVP," said Larry Creger, director of the summer league and a former Cavs assistant coach. "Anderson showed here that he can play the shooting guard in the NBA." Anderson, 6-foot-7, averaged 29 points and seven rebounds and shot 56 percent in California. Karl has spent much of the summer fretting over his backcourt. He is content with John Bagley at the point and believes newly acquired Ennis Whatley also can help at that spot. But at the moment, there is no one behind World B.

Free. Johnny Davis, who shared time at both point and shooting guard, is a free agent. Anderson was a forward last year. "For Anderson, the playing time is at guard," said Karl. If Anderson is to make the club, it will be as a guard.

The frontcourt will have no fewer than nine (if you count John Williams) players who rebound better than Anderson. At 27, Anderson has reached the stage of his career where he must play. But since this is only his second pro SPORTS FACTS Af3D FIGURES scoreline: 375-8057 LOCAL GOLF CORNER Listed are area sports events and home games of the Cleveland Indians and Browns, Cincinnati Reds and Bengals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers and Detroit Tigers and Lions. SMU will not sue over grid penalties Southern Methodist University officials backed off challenging the NCAA with a lawsuit Monday, opting to accept severe sanctions against the Mustang football program and trying to clean up the school's image. "We've been reprimanded and we're going to grin and bear it," said Bill Clements, chairman of SMU's Board of Governors.

"We will not file suit with the NCAA. Our judgment is that for the long-term interest of SMU, it's not the thing to do." SMU, charged with 36 rules violations by the NCAA, finds itself on probation for the sixth time. The Mustangs will have no scholarships next year and only 15 to offer in 1987. They also are prohibited from appearing on television in 1986 or participating in bowl games for two seasons. Athletic director Bob Hitch and coach Bobby Collins escaped with their jobs, despite clauses in their contracts saying they could be fired if found guilty of major violations.

The infractions listed by the NCAA included a recruiting inducement of $5,000 from a supporter, extra benefits to student athletes, breach of tryout rules and illegal expense-paid trips. The violations occurred during the coaching tenures of both Collins and his predecessor, Ron Meyer. Baseball Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Rod Scurry became the first player directly linked to the investigation of drug use in baseball when he was named as a customer of a man who pleaded guilty to selling cocaine. The plea was entered by Dale Shiftman, one of seven men indicted by the Pittsburgh grand jury investigating drug sales around Three Rivers Stadium. He pleaded guilty to 20 drug trafficking charges, but another 91 counts against Shiffman were dropped in a plea bargain.

Assistant U.S. Attorney James Ross said that if Shiftman's case had gone to trial, Scurry was prepared to testify that he bought cocaine from Shiffman at least 19 times during the 1982 and '83 seasons. Scurry has undergone drug rehabilitation and publicly acknowledged his drug use. Allegheny County Commissioner Pete Flaherty said he supported a proposed public-private buyout of the Pittsburgh Pirates, becoming the first of the three commissioners to do so. The California Angels placed pitcher Geoff Zahn on the 15-day disabled list with tendonitis of the left shoulder.

Zahn, 38, made three starts after returning from the disabled list on Aug. 3, and compiled an 0-2 record and a 9.94 ERA. He is 2-2 with a 4.38 ERA for the season. Elliott, of Dawsonville, has won not including $100,000 guaranteed after winning the first two events of the Winston Million. By winning Bristol's $33,000 top prize, he would be able to top the million mark simply by starting the season's remaining nine races.
