MARSDEN said Kohoutek, after whom the comet is named, discovered the comet as a very faint object moving against the background of stars in the constellation Hydra. Marsden, basing his information on observations by Kohoutek and several Smithsonian and Japanese astronomers, has plotted an orbit that will bring the comet to its closest approach to the sun of Dec. 27. He said the comet could have naked-eye visibility for some six weeks before and after that date. "The comet is following a path that will bring it close to the sun in nine months and very likely turn it into one of the most striking astronomical sights of the century," Marsden said.
