once to them and now they wanted to do it to us." HE was referring to an International Chess Federation (FIDE) decision to postpone the match July 2 when Fischer did not show in time for the opening game. The Russian Chess Federation said the postponement violated FIDE's own rules. Spassky won the draw Thursday night and will play the white pieces, which means he will make the very first move of the match. Fischer will play black. The two opponents appeared relaxed and in a good mood when they met in the hall for the first time since they arrived here.

Spassky even wished Fischer good luck when they shook hands. THEY may meet again once before Tuesday. Lothar Schmid, the FIDE judge, would like both to inspect the facilities together. They tested chairs, the board and the chess pieces Thursday night. THERE was talk of Fischer flying in his own chair from New York unless he finds a suitable one here.

Schmid has four or five different chess sets from which to pick the match set. The organizers have also treated the marble playing board with acid to take away the glare on the surface. Compiled from Dispatches Temperamental, egocentric, and moody are but a few of the adjectives normally used to describe Robert James Fischer, who long ago earned the sobriquet "enfant terrible" in chess and who has been the undisputed holder of the particular title ever since. Long before his current Icelandic saga Fischer became the bane of tournament directors all over the globe, complaining about everything from noise and lighting to spectators and schedules. He has refused to play in some events, walked out in the middle of others, and generally created problems everywhere he competed.

For a Russian, the thought that Fischer could defeat their champion is something akin to what an American would feel at the idea that nine Soviets could whip the Pittsburgh Pirates in four straight. The object of the Russians' concern is still called "Bobby" though he is now 29 years old. FISCHER was born in Chicago March 9, 1943, but raised In Brooklyn, where his family moved when he was 2. His sister taught Bobby the fundamentals of chess when he was 6. With the help of a neighbor and using his own remarkable powers of memory and concentration, Fischer became United States champion at age 14.

Since then, the 64 black and white squares of the chessboard and the desire to prove himself unequalled in his mastery of them have become Fischer's obsession. He dropped out of Erasmus High School in Brooklyn in his junior year. "I couldn't waste my time with all those stupid kids" and with teachers "even stupider than the kids," he said. A gangling 6-foot-2 and good-looking with penetrating eyes and a shock of unkempt brown hair, Fischer lives quietly in Los Angeles. Few know what he does or how he lives.

He has few friends and virtually no life outside of chess. FISCHER has won an unprecedented string of victories in the past two years, the last over the Armenian master of defensive chess, Tigran Petrosian, to earn the right to face Spassky, who had earlier defeated Petrosian to win the world title. With an unsurpassed memory and encyclopedic knowledge of the game, Fischer is a great positional player and ferocious attacker. But his complaints about flashbulbs, noise, living conditions and spectator movement have been known to drive tournament directors wild. Fischer Is a bachelor who lives from hotel to hotel He studies incessantly, even going so far as to ask for a room with no view so as to have fewer distractions.

When he does engage in other activities, such as running, swimming, bowling, and tennis, the primary purpose is really to keep himself in the top physical condition which he knows is necessary for his game to be sharp. This business of training never ceased to baffle non-chess players, who wonder how strenuous it can be to push a few little pieces of wood around a board. The fact is, that the mental effort required in a five-hour chess game can have the same physical effect as a game of football. Fischer isn't a paragon of general knowledge or the social graces. A few years ago the prince of Monaco asked the United States to send two grandmasters to a tournament there, specify-ing that one had to be Fischer.

He played and won the RYKJAVTK, Iceland (IPD (UPI) Boris Spassky gave up his demand that Bobby Fischer forfeit the first game of their world championship chess matcher in return for Fischer's agreement to postpone the game until Tuesday, U.S. chess sources said yesterday. The compromise was worked out in a backstage room of Reykjavik's main sports hall Thursday night a few minutes before the American challenger and the world champion from Russia appeared on stage to draw lots for the first move, the sources said. The 24-game, $250,000 match originally was scheduled to begin last Sunday, but was delayed by Fischer's failure to show up and the Russian's demands that he be punished. "ONE of our conditions to play the match at all was that the Russians give up their demand for the first match point," said Fred Cramer, a vice president of the U.S.

Chess Federation. Cramer said minor obstacles might still crop up before the first game, "but nothing serious enough to endanger the start of the match. "Bobby would have liked to start play on Sunday, but we agreed to another postponement," he said. "The Russians apparently felt we had done it SATURDAY AND SATURDAY AND SUNDAY ONLY! SUNDAY I) 6 ONLY! Boris Spassky: cool when heat's on Compiled from dispatches Boris Vasilevish Spassky, world chess champion, stays cool when those around him sweat and squirm.

He sits on a stage under boiling klieg lights, surrounded by a hundred newsmen. His future is at stake. A powerful and terrible-tempered man wants his job. In a soft and nonchalant voice, he says: "I do not know who will win, but I am sure it will be an interesting and important event." SPASSKY, of Leningrad, Russia, is the world champion at the game of chess. He could not be more unlike America's Bobby Fischer, the cocky and controversial chess genius who is challenging for Spassky's title and boasting he will win.

Spassky, who defeated fellow Soviet player Tigran Petrosyan for the world title in 1969, looks more like a 25-year-old track and field star than a 35-year-old chess champion. He sounds more like the nice boy next door than a celebrity. Slender and broad shouldered, without an ounce of fat, Spassky can be recognized in a crowd by his thick brown wavy hair and his almost baby face. The soft facial effect is sharpened by a prominent beak of a nose and ice blue eyes that never seem to blink. The champion is soft spoken, courteous, modest and unassuming.

AT a chessboard, Mr. Nice guy disappears. Like Fischer, Spassky is an aggressive, attacking player, although generally rated not quite as quick and a bit more profound in style. Spassky demolished defensive master Petrosyan for the title three years ago, beating him in only 24 moves in one game. Spassky was born in Leningrad in 1937 and took a degree in journalism, although he is strictly a professional chess player.

He began playing chess at age 9, became an international master at 16 and world junior champion at 18 in 1955. He first challenged Petrosyan for the world title in 1966 and lost. Little is known about his private life or preparations for this match. IT is known, however, that like all Soviet chess players he preps with heavy athletic training as well as mental tuning. Hf was a track athlete as a young man and likes swimming now.

The champion has learned what it's like to be "out of favor" with the Soviet Government. In 1960 the United States beat the Russians for the world student championship, and Spassky, who lost with the white pieces in 29 moves to William Lombardy, was blamed for the failure. Authorities claimed he hadn't trained properly, and had failed to take the game seriously enough. He was omitted from the Soviet team for the next two years and was not allowed to play abroad in any international competitions. Spassky lives in a three-room Moscow apartment with his second wife, Larissa, a refrigerator engineer, and their son, Vasily, 5, and a 12-year-old daughter, Tatiana.
