irw, nw i Id) Is) It 5 Hurricqnes are college champs 1 1 II 11 17 Va3SV i NEW YORfc (UPI) -The Miami Hurricanes took the wind out of Nebraska in the Orange Bowl and were named college football champions behind a tidal wave of support from the UPI Board of Coaches. A day after-surviving the' previously unbeaten and top-rnkj Ccr.uiuakers" 3i-3U through a failed two-point conversion in the final minute, coach Howard Schnellenberger's Hurricanes, who entered the game ranked fourth, received 30 of 41 first-place votes. Even Schnellenberger didn't expect such support. "It doesn't bother me at all," he said of the first-place votes his teain didn't get, "Quite frankly I'm surprised that we got as many as we did." Nebraska, which finished at 12-1 after Coach Tom Osborne's decision to play for a victory instead of a tie was broken up by Miami defensive sback Ken Calhoun, earned six first-place nods. Auburn, an uninspiring 9-7 victor over Michigan in the Sugar Bowl, notched four first-place irotes to remain No.

3. Georgia, after perhaps costing Texas a shot at the title with 10-9 victory in the Cotton Bowl, rose to No. 4. Texas garnered one first-place vote and fell from No. 2 to No.

5. Rounding out the top 10 were: 6, Florida; 7, Brigham Young; 8, Ohio State; 9, Michigan, and 10, Illinois. The second 10 were: 11, SMU; 12, Alabama; 13, UCLA; 14, Iowa; 15, Air Force; 16, West Virginia; 17, Penn State; 18, Oklahoma 19, Pittsburgh, and 20, Boston College. Schnellenberger -said Miami's tough schedule was a big plus. "We already had a most attractive national schedule which would allow the team to win the national championship," he said.

Next year's schedule could turn into a monster with seven teams that have been in the top 20 in 1983. Schnellenberger said it was way too early to start worrying about St, Lui it" docs offer another opportunity. "We will always have the national schedule that you have to have to compete for the national title," he said. "You can go to some other schools and win every game and not be considered." The Board is composed of six coaches each from seven geographical areas of the country. All but one of the 42 member coaches were available for their ballots.

Calhoun, who had been victimized by Smith's 4th-and-8 sprint, knocked away a pass from quarterback Turner Gill intended for Smith, sending the Orange Bowl crowd into a frenzy and winning the approval of the UPI Board of Coaches. "I thinkOsborne was completely correct going for two points," said Schnellenberger. "He thinks like a champion. If I was in that situation, I would have done exactly the same thing." Auburn coach Pat Dye was not happy with Miami's selection as No. 1..

"Miami put on a campaign," Dye said, "it they influence the polls as hard as they are trying, they're going to get it. I'd love for our kids to win the national championship, but I them to win it on a political ballot. I feel like we're No. 1. "Who did Miami beat that's anybody?" Dye asked.

When someone suggested Notre Dame, the Auburn coach snickered, "Notre Dame? Lord have mercy. If you want to compare notes, we'll compare notes. We've got' a satchel full of them." AAallory new IU coach By United Press International New York's Ernie Grunfeld is a realist. Not even the euphoria of beating the Los Angeles Lakers 117-105 Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden could shake that. "Last year they beat us twice," Grunfeld said.

"This year, we played very well against them both times. -But you have to remember they didn't have Magic Johnson." For the 14th straight the Lakers played without Johnson and are now 7-7 with him out of the lineup. This week, of course, Wray will be Jim Piunkett, leading the Raider offense. The Seahawks are making.

their first playoff appearance in history. "It's unreal," Wray said Tuesday. "If we win, this Sunday, we'll be in the' Super Bowl. I don't think that's hit us yet. "We're playing real good ball, as good as anyone extfept maybe Washington, after watching them Sunday.

I think we've convinced a lot of people we are for real." The Seahawks scratched their way to a 9-7 record in the regular season, good enough to earn a wild-card spot in the playoffs. Seattle then smashed Denver 31-7 and nipped Miami 27-20 in the playoffs to adjwfice to the AFC title game againsffhe L.A. Raiders. According to Wray, the game may come down to a battle of the running backs- L.A.'s Marcus Allen and Seattle rookie'Curt Warner. "Allen's a good athlete," Wray said.

"If we can keep him under control, we'll be all right. I think he hurt Pittsburgh." As for the Seahawk offense, a little different than the pass-happy squad Wray led at Franklin. 'I told Dave, 'Fjii going to come in next year and push you so you Can be the best you can be and I can be No. 2." While Wray is enjoying the practicesand the parties, pep rallies and other playoff hoopla he said he's getting a little homesick after 26 weeks in the northwest. "I'm getting ready to come home," he said.

But he wouldn't mind waiting until after the Super Bowl. Getting Warner, outside means the Seahawk offensive line will have to do a good job. "We have to control the line," he said. Wray likes what' he's seen of Krieg, who took over at quarterback for Zorn midway through the season. "He's doing his job," Wray said, adding that the Seattle game plans have worked out well late in the season and into the playoffs.

The Plainfield High School graduate also credited Krieg with leading the Seahawks to a come-from-behihd win over Miami after a crucial Miami interception had given the Dolphins the lead.
