obituaries 'Tuesday, Feb. 22, 1 872 25 Walter Winchell, columnist, buried Copper Anaconda, and was vice president and plant manager when he retired in 1352. He was a life member of the American Institute of Mining and a former member of the Newark Lions Club. When he retired, he moved to Plum-steadville near Doylestown, where his wife, Mrs. Mabel L.

Trumbull, died last Nov. 12. He then moved to St. Louis to live with his daughter, Mrs. Winthrop B.

Reed. He also is survived by two grandchildren and a greatgrandchild. The funeral, in St. Louis, was private. Interment will be in Anaconda.

Mrs. J. Swainey Bennett LEWES Mrs. Marie S. Bennett, 66, of Clarksville, died Monday at Beebe Hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. E. Russell Johnston Mrs. Ethel D. Johnston, 76, of 3105 N.

Van Buren died Sunday in the Tilton Terrace Nursing Home after a long illness. Mrs. Johnston, a native of Philadelphia, had lived in Wilmington since 1940. She was a member of the Hanover Presbyterian Church, the Washington Heights Century Club and the New Century Club of Wilmington. i She is survived by her husband, E.

Russell Johnston; a son, E. Russell Jr. of Storrs, and four grandchildren. Services will be Friday afternoon at 2 at the Spicer-Mul-likin Funeral Home, 24th and Market Sts. Holloway SALISBURY, Md. Lester A. Holloway, 72, of 711 Webster was dead on arrival at Peninsula General Hospital here Saturday night after suffering an apparent heart at- tack while walking near his home during a snow storm. Mr. Holloway, a native of Parsonsburg, was a lifelong resident of the Salisbury area.

He was a retired plumber. He is survived by two brothers, Louis of near Parsonsburg and Lawrencew S. of near Salisbury; and two sisters, Mrs. Betty Adkins of Wango, and Mrs. Hazel Stevenson of Eden, Md.

Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home, Salisbury, where friends may call Thursday from noon until 1:30 p.m. Interment will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, near Parsonsburg. Miss Elizabeth B. Heyse SALISBURY, Md.

Services will be Saturday afternoon at 2 at Holy Trinity Methodist Church, Salisbury, for Elizabeth B. Heyse, 19, one of two persons killed early Saturday in an accident on U.S. 13 near Delmar. Friends may call at the church an hour before the service. Interment will be in Salisbury.

Miss Heyse, a sophomore at Morgan State College, Baltimore, was a past worthy advisor to the Order of Rainbow Girls, sponsored by Chapter 5, Order of the Eastern Star of Salisbury. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Nancy Cook Heyse of Meadowbridge Road, a brother, David P. at home; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.

Fred Heyse of Bridgeport, and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Louis Krentzman of Shelton, Conn. Miss Heyse's father, Frederick C. Heyse, served as administrator for three years befored his death in 1966. Benjamin S.

Startt SMYRNA Services will be tomorrow for Benjamin. S. Startt, 59, of near Smyrna, who was dead on arrival at 1:30 a.m. Sunday at Kent General Hospital, Dover. Startt collapsed in the snow on Kent 42, east of Brenford, as he and a companion were seeking assistance for their snow-stranded automobile.

State police attributed the death to exposure. Mr. Startt was born in Warwick, but lived most of his life in the Middletown area. For the past six years, he had been employed by Leeds Travelwear of Clayton, and had lived in Smyrna for only four months. He was divorced.

Mr. Startt is survived by a daughter, Miss MarleneHev-erin of Magnolia; four broth Mrs. Richard R. Whittington Mrs. Martha C.

Whittington, 62, of 505 Lake Richardson Park, died yesterday in General Division after a short illness. A lifelong resident of the Wilmington area, Mrs. Whittington was the wife of Richard Raymond Whittington who died in 1965. Mr. and Mrs.

Whittington had raised four nieces, Mrs. Patricia Warrington of Wilmington; Mrs. Hilda Lowe, Pendrew Manor; Mrs. Cecelia Lena of Burlingame, and Mrs. Bernadine Eichen-bery of Apple Valley, and three nephews, Edward Retkowski of Baltimore and John and Joseph Peters, both of Newport Heights.

Mrs. Whittington is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Helen Bu-kowski of Wilmington. Services will be tomorrow afternoon at 1 at the Gracelawn Memorial Chapel with interment in the adjoining cemetery. Friends may call tonight at the McCrery Memorial Chapel, Kirkwood Highway and Duncan Road.

Wilmer E. Wilkinson KEMBLESVILLE, Pa. Wilmer E. Wilkinson, 72, a retired dairy farmer, was dead on arrival Sunday at the Possum Park Medical Center near Newark, apparently of a heart attack. Mr.

Wilkinson is survived by two sons, Arnold R. of Perry-man, and Glenn of Kemblesville; two i Mrs. Myrtle Cooper of Kennett Square and Mrs. Lillian Phillips of Wilmington; and five grandchildren. He was divorced.

Services will be tomorrow afternoon at 1 in the Eastburn Funeral Home, Avondale, where friends may call tonight. Interment will be in New Presbyterian Cemetery. John C. Costello Jr. John Charles Costello, 54, of Bangkok, Thailand, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, and Wilmington, died recently after suffering a heart attack in Bangkok, it was learned here yesterday.

Mr. Costello lived in Wilmington for a number of years while employed at the Du Pont Co. as a systems consultant in the engineering department. He was a graduate of Mont-clair State College in New Jersey and received a masters degree at Columbia University. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Delta Phi fraternities.

He served in the Navy as a lieutenant from 1942 to 1948. He was employed by Bat-telle Memorial Institute as a director of the Thailand Information Center. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Costello; a daughter, Mrs. William Watson of Boston; and three sons, John, Fred and Carl of Columbus. Cremation took place in Bangkok.

Memorial services were held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Co: lurhbus. Mrs. Clayton Shimp SALEM, N.J. Mrs.

Alice M. Shimp, 87, of 335 New Market died Friday in the Salem Nursing Home, where she had PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) Walter Winchell, whose stinging news commentary was read and heard by millions for 40 years, was buried here yesterday, in a private service with a single mourner and a rabbi present. Walda Winchell, kneeling beside her father's flag-draped casket, was the mourner. "His entire family is here now," Miss Winchell said as she asked three bystanders to leave.

"I have wanted it this way. Will you please forgive me?" The graves of Winchell's son. Walter who committed suicide in 1968, and of his wife, Elizabeth, who died two years ago of a heart condition, are next to his. Winchell. 74, died Sunday at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

His daughter said he died "technically of cancer, but actually of a broken heart." She declined to comment further. A single, white hearse carrying Winchell's body arrived at Greenwood Memorial Park nearly half an hour late. Three pallbearers from the mortuary took the simple, cedar casket to the gravesite, then left, leaving Miss Winchell and the Rabbi, Albert Plotkin, alone during the service. After the funeral, the rabbi said he described Winchell as a man who gave "America a soul to believe in and a hope to be achieved by believing in Howard M. Sherman Jr.

CAMBRIDGE, Md. Howard M. Sherman 55, of 112 Vue De Leau died Sunday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, after a long illness. Mr. Sherman was born in Cambridge and was a lifelong resident of the area.

During World War II he was an airplane pilot in the Navy. After the war he owned and operated the LeCompte Shoe Store on Race St. in Cambridge. Later he sold the store and entered into partnership with his father in the shipping trading as W. E.

Valliant Cambridge. He was an active member of the yacht club of the Cambridge Country Club. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, the former Carolyn Robbins, he is survived by two sons, Howard M. Ill of West Palm Beach, and Donald S.

of Hill-crest Heights, four grandsons; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard M. Sherman Sr. of Cambridge.

Winchell's radio broadcasts during the 33s and 40s were heard by millions. At one time, his column was syndicated in nearly 1,000 newspapers.

He announced his recrement in 1969 after his son's suicide, but a year later began writing columns for the Daily Mirror in New York. He retired again less than a year later. Besides his daughter, Winchell is survived by three grandchildren. Tommaso Nicastro Tommaso Nicastro, 70, of 16 W. Brandy wine Claymont, died Sunday at Riverside Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Nicastro moved to Claymont from Italy in 1955. He was a baker for Del Campo Baking Co. until 1965. He is survived by his wife, Mrs.

Carmela Nicastro; three sons, Pietro and Gerardo, both of Italy, and Lorenzo of Wil-m i three daughters, Mrs. Giovanna M. Oloro of Italy, and Miss Consiglia Nicastro and Miss Liliana Nicastro, both of Claymont; two brothers, John of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Gerardo of Italy; and nine grandchildren. A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered Thursday morning at 9:30 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Philadelphia Pike, Claymont. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery.

Interment will be in Brotherhood Cemetery, Millville. 3 hospitalized in road crash SHARPTOWN, N.J. Four persons were injured at 1:45 yesterday morning in a head-on collision a mile west of here on U.S. 40. State Police said Luther Pendleton, 20, of Woodbury, and two passengers, Janet Brice, 18, Paulsboro, and Diane Jackson, 15, Woodbury, were admitted to Salem County Memorial Hospital for treatment of multiple injuries.

Hospital attendants said Miss Brice and Miss Jackson each suffered leg fractures, while Pendleton was under treatment for a concussion and facial cuts. The second driver involved, Michael Maconi, 19, of Walnut Street, Penns Grove, was released after treatment for chest bruises. Rural Dagsboro fire victim to be buried MILLSBORO Graveside services will be at 11 this morning in Dagsboro Memorial Cemetery for Bonnie Sue Myers, 15, who died early Sunday in a fire which swept an abandoned farmhouse near Dagsboro. Miss Myers, a pupil at Sel-byville Junior High School, was the daughter of Mrs. Mary I.

Allen of near Mills-boro and George Myers of Syracuse, N.Y. She is also survived by a sister, Tina, at home; three half-brothers, Mark Allen, Lewis Allen and Patrick Allen, and "a half-sister, Tammy Allen, all at home. Mrs. Mintz was a lifelong resident of Dover. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she served as treasurer. Her husband, Robert, died in 1954. She is survived by a son, Rolland S.

Services and interment were yesterday. James L. Lekites LEWES James Lloyd Lekites, 76, of 346 Chestnut died Sunday night at Beebe Hospital here. Mr. Lekites was born in Lewes, he lived in Philadelphia until six years ago.

He retired in 1964 from a job as an engineer for the City of Philadelphia. He was an Army veteran of World War I. He is survived by his wife, Mrs.Ethel A. Lekites. Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m.
