It li the first in a series of regular music reviews to appear in the Daily Journal.) y. Along the way things happen.

This was to be review ot the new Pink Floyd album "Wish You Were Here.v which is currently atop the "Billboard" sales survey after only three weeks on the marjcet. The thing that happened was the release of "Man-Child," the newest statement from keyboard genius Her(bie Not to take anything away from Pink Floyd but "Man-Child" is the perfect way to begin any music review column and it deserves the full attention of any music critic. About two years ago after Hancock's brilliant album "Headhunters" exploded and catapulted contemporary jazz into the popular sales market (it was the very first jazz album to sell more than one million copies in one pressing) he admitted that he had looked upon rock music with a iaun-- diced view. He termed himself an elitist and confided that he really wanted to play "With the. funk that Sly Stone plays." With Man-Child he has definitely reached that point and touched a plateau even farther.

He has touched stones with -Gershwin, Ives, Ellington and, yes, Sly Stone. From the beginning, "Man-Child" is a self-conscious statement. The first cut entitled "Hang-up Your pops with a bristly staccato beat and expands into a swelling Ellington type piece complete with the big band swing. From there Hancock travels into a mystical mood with "Sun Touch." In a retrospective style he traces steps back to his roots with Miles Davis. Abstract and weaving, the melody floats on puctuated percussions and swelling bass lines.

Thoroughly a fluid song, "Sun Touch" lends a quiet mellow feeling almost a lullabye to the listener. Unfortunately, the mood is broken by the weakest song on the entire album. "Traitor," true to its title is the traitor to this album. Too long and too thinly spread it is very reminiscent of "Headhunters" but without the vitality of that earlier piece. That is not to say that this cut is bad, it just isn't as good as it could be.

Good fortune smiles though and side two quickly returns to the positive side with a soft piece titled "Bubble." Gentle, tumbling piano and bass provide an unusually light, almost visual picture of bubbles. Showing the influence that funky Sly Stone has had on his music, Hancock swings into the nifty "Steppin' In It." Very bouncy, the son is balanced by Paul Jackson's deliberate but sassy bass lines. To cap this eight-minute roller coaster song is Stevie Wonder's harmonica dueling with Hancock's vibrant synthesizer. 7 "Steppin' In It" not only shows that Hancock has learned to play funky he has also learned to give some of the spotlight to his band. Closing this marvelous alburri is the creative and inspiring "Heartbeat." Plusing subconscious percussions and the airy electric piano give this cut the depth that its title signifies.

There are a lot of people who are afraid of jazz. Yes, afraid. Once they said it was too sinful, too earthy. Now, those skeptics call it vague and unintelligible. Wrong, it is neither.

Like Ellington once said "Jazz is essence." And Herbie Hancock's "Man-Child" is, the essence of progressive (not aggressive) jazz.
