IV "Pick 'Em" Davidson follows in mom's steps 7 i. Pete Davidson Jr. edged out 14 other entrants with 6-2 records by coming the closest to predicting Indiana's 38-37 victory over Brigham Young to win last week's Journal football "Pick 'Em contest. Pete's win added a second notch on the Davidsons' record, as his mother, Jan, won the basketball contest last week. As that clan and the neighbors generally combine to send in one of the fattest envelopes of ballots each week, we may see another victory from the Davidsons before the season winds up.

The short list of bowl games and pro playoff contests provided two major upsets: Indiana's victory over Brigham Young, and Washington's defeat of Texas in college bowl games. While those two were at least a game ahead of the rest of the field, they were completely wrong about the tiebreaker game, as North Carolina won 61-57 a turn of events few predicted. Other surpriSes included Utah's victory over Louisville in the college games, and Phoenix's defeat of Milwaukee on the pro schedule. Kentucky, the nation's No. 2 team, came out a three-time loser Thursday when it was announced standout freshmen Sam Bowie and Dirk Minniefield were suspended for Saturday's game against third-ranked Notre Dame for "violation of well-established training rules." In an apparently unrelated matter, sophomore guard Dwight Anderson said he was leaving the university for "personal reasons." Kentucky Coach Joe Hall did not elaborate on the training violations.
