One positive was the PC division, which Thoman said is exceeding the growth rate of industry leader Compaq. He did not supply raw numbers, though. IBM's services division, the star of the quarter, grew 28 percent.

Thoman tried to calm possible concern over the weak core businesses by noting that IBM is a changing company. "We're increasingly a services business and less dependent on hardware," he said. Hardware was 45 percent of revenues for the quarter, down from 50 percent in 1994. "That's an extraordinary shift," he said. Not all analysts were swayed.

New businesses will take a long time to match sputtering core businesses, says Bob Djurdjevic at Annex Research. "I'm more down on 1 BM than before," he savs. IBM earnings announced Wednesday beat analyst forecasts and provided further proof that IBM is shifting from a hardware maker to a software and services company. First-quarter net income was $1.2 billion, or $2.37 per share, vs. $1.2 billion, or $2.2 1 a share, a year ago.

Per share results were better this year because IBM has been buying back its shares, cutting the number outstanding by 8 percent. Analysts had expected earnings around $2.28 a share. IBM's revenue for the quarter was up 5 percent to 1 7.3 billion. In a conference call to analysts Wednesday, IBM officials sounded upbeat about the future, which might boost technology stocks and the stock market as a whole. Chief Financial Officer Richard Thoman said he believes IBM's plimtiH against rou tor the retwt as set forth thai document (see tompiemt.

Somber IBM analyst calls have sent IBM and other technology stocks lower. But this one was positive. "I do feel good about the full year," Thoman said. However, there is some weakness in IBM's core businesses.

Overall hardware sales were up less than 1 percent for the quarter, to $7.8 billion. Two main lines of big IBM computers the System390 and AS400 are selling poorly as IBM shifts to new models. "But clearly the board of directors could not be delighted to buy Snapple for $1.7 billion and sell it for $300 million." That's what Triarc Companies paid for Snapple last month. To boost the bottom line.

Smithburg said Quaker will expand internationally, particularly in China. It also will sell "non-core" businesses over the next year, he said. The $1.11 billion loss for the quarter compared ith net income of $32.2 million a year earlier. Quaker stock rose 1.625 to $39,875. Despite the pending sale, expected to close by the end of June.

Quaker will roll out new ads for Snapple Monday. Triarc will pick up the campaign until it creates its ow ads. On Friday, Triarc CEO Michael Weinstein is expected to meet ith Wendy Kaufman, Snapple's folksy, former spokeswoman, who appeared in 36 spots as Wendy the Snapple Lady. USA TODAY The bitter aftertaste of selling Snapple for a song has left Quaker Oats reeling with a record quarterly loss and out hunting for a new CEO. The maker of Gatorade and Cap'n Crunch said, as expected, it posted a loss of 1.

1 billion for the first quarter. Not expected, however, was word that chairman William Smithburg will leave the company. Smithburg, 58, said he will help the board of directors find his replacement "within a matter of months. "Smithburg, who has been CEO since 1 98 1 said he plans to "turn the keys to the machine over to that person." Industry analystssay that Smithburg, who started out as a brand manager at Quaker Oats more than three decades ago, probably was nudged by the board of directors. Smithburg declined to explain hy he chose to retire early.

Majestic Resorts LLC will take over Boomtown's Las Vegas property, in which Majestic's president, Edward Roski is now a partner with Boomtown. Roski is also a co-owner of the Los Angeles Kings pro hockey team and has an option to become co-owner of the Los Angeles Lakers pro basketball team. For Hollywood Park, the deal launches it into long-sought full-scale casino gaming. Boomtown President and Chief Operating Officer Phil Bryan will continue to oversee day-to-day casino operations, but will not oversee card-club operations. Hollywood Park Chairman and CEO Randall Hubbard will oversee the consolidated company.

Commissioner Bob Lewis reminded Hubbard of the importance of regulatory compliance for the larger operations, saying that what happens elsewhere reflects on Nevada. "I hope that you place the compliance function as one of your very highest priorities." Lewis said. When the state Gaming Control Board voted 3-0 on April 9 to approve the merger, its only concern involved Hollywood gaming chief Mark Sterbens. It was concerned that he did not act more quickly on a violation of internal security procedures at the Hollywood Park Casino card club, but was satisfied to learn that Sterbens would not oversee Boomtown's gaming. When the deal is completed, Boomtown expects immediately to begin adding 200 rooms to its Verdi hotel.

It also will have the money to pursue its master plan: an expansion of about 2.000 rooms and a major entertainment complex the kind of project Parrott said he believes is critical to Reno's future. Richard Bulis. chairman of the Verdi Township Citizen Adv isory Board, did not agree that Reno needs major attractions like Boomtown is proposing in its master plan to maintain its competitiveness. In its earnings report, meanwhile, Boomtown said its Reno property produced higher revenues in the second quarter. The property benefited from expense management that resulted in a 300-pcrcent increase in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, hich jumped to 1 .4 million from $356,000.

The New Orleans property provided the strongest revenue and income from operations.W ithout the inclusion of operations from Boomtown's Las Vegas property, which will be divested after the acquisition, the company would have reported net income of 1.1 million forthe second quarter.
