Thursday, May 7, 1992 5B Vegas Strip resort to close down in July Woolworth rebounds with 1st quarter earnings $49 million a year earlier. Revenue fell 1.5 percent to just under $2.1 billion from $2.13 billion, in part reflecting the planned closing of about 900 U.S. specialty and general merchandise stores. However, Woolworth, hit hard by the recession in the United States and Canada, had uneven sales during the first quarter. LAS VEGAS (AP) Longtime hotel executive Ed Torres has sent notice to 411 workers that he will close his El Rancho Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip July 6.

The announcement comes after Torres failed in efforts to get concessions from unions for his financially-troubled resort. Johnny LaVoie, a spokesman for Culinary Union Local 226, says the union received notice of the closure Tuesday. "He's not kidding," LaVoie said. "It's going to close." The decision to close was apparently made Friday after the Culinary and Bartenders unions voted 100 to 30 against pay and job concessions. Torres has been trying to sell the resort, but has been unable to come up with a buyer.

Under federal law, Torres was required to notify his employees of the closing 60 days in advance. The resort sits on 20 acres on the Strip, between the Riviera and Sahara hotels. The resort was built as the Thunderbird, and the name was later changed to the Silverbird. Torres changed the name to the El Rancho when he bought the property after selling his interest in the Aladdin Hotel. NEW YORK (AP) Wool-worth Corp.

said Wednesday it earned $17 million in the first quarter, compared to a loss a year earlier due to an accounting change. The retailer said its operating earnings, which reflect the health of its ongoing business, were up 20 percent in the quarter ended April 25. Woolworth said its profit amounted to 13 cents per share and compared with a shortfall of $100 million, or 77 cents per share, in the same period of 1991. The company took a 1 1 3 million one-time charge for a change in accounting for post-retirement benefits in the first quarter of last year. Woolworth reported operating income of $59 million, up from ove MM QjJ Send the FTD' Or the FTD' Reno Gazette-Journal ust add 1 Mother's Love Bouqet.
