Akron B-'iH on Journal B7 COLLEGE FOOTBALL i.iy. 0, fotipr 9, 1980 makievsl To Ohio State. Jd hi means points not as if it was for a record, or distance or victory." BRICK professes to be amazed at Janakievski. "I've never seen a finer kicker," he says. "In that respect, I doubt if any team in the country has a better kicking game than we do because we have three specialists." In addition to Janakievski, those include Orosz, who is averaging a little less than 42 yards a punt, and Bob Atha, who consistently kicks off out of the end zone and three times this season has kicked the ball right through the opponent's goal posts.

"I guess," says Bruce, "you could say we've got foot specialists." By Jack Patterson Beacon Journal staff writer Ohio State coach Earle Bruge calls him "money in the bank." Perhaps that's because Bruce, like many fans, can't pronounce Vlade Janakievski. Phonetically, it's "Vla de Yawn-a-. kee-ef-ski." Dramatically, Janakievski has kicked his way into. Ohio State fans' hearts by securing virtually every Buckeye record for extra points and field goals during his career. Janakievski was born in Yugoslavia but has spent the last 11 years in the United States, graduating from Columbus Whitehall High as a soccer star.

At 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds, Janakiev- 100 footballs a day, his distance has improved dramatically. His career best was a 51-yarder against Illinois last year, but in practice this season he has hit one from 62 yards. JANAKIEVSKI attributes his success to his kicking "team." That includes center John Hutchings, who snaps only on kicking tries, and punter Tom Orosz, who holds for him. "We're like a family," says Janakievski of his triumvirate. "We have a real feel for each other.

We have it down to a science, almost. The coaches say we should get the kick away in 1.3 seconds. We go about 1.9." Janakievski says the only way to approach each kick is unemotionally. "I just try to kick like I would in practice, ski switched from soccer to football three seasons ago and has accounted for 241 points in his career, second only to Pete Johnson's 348 from 1973-76, He has sidewinded 139 of 145 extra points and 34 of 47 field goals. He holds Ohio State's consecutive extra point record at 47 and an NCAA record of four field goals in a half against Minnesota this year.

Heading into Saturday's game at Northwestern, Janakievski is perfect this year with 8 of 8 field goals and 12 of 12 extra points. He did not see action in Ohio State's 17-0 loss to UCLA so his 12 points a game for three starts ties him with Sammy Winder of Southern Mississippi and A. J. Jones of Texas for the NCAA scoring lead this year. Janakievski also has 10 consecutive field goals dating back to last season's Michigan game.

Actually, he has 13 counting the Rose Bowl, but the NCAA doesn't count post-season games in its statistics. So Janakievski needs seven more in succession to break the NCAA major college record of 16 held by Arkansas' Ish Ordonez and Maryland's Dale Castro. JANAKIEVSKI'S string this year stretches from 19 to 42 yards, and he says he now "feels comfortable from 50 yards in." It wasn't always that way. As a sophomore, Janakievski's range was questionable after 35 yards. Even last year he was pressing from 50.

But by building up his strength and kicking Kent, Western Michigan both ailing 1 der, a 5-11, 167-pound freshman from Cleveland Heights. McGruder opened some eyes when he was inserted in the lineup against Ohio to run back kickoffs. McGruder returned three for 76 yards. He brought the fans to their feet immediately when he took the opening kickoff at Kent's '4 and nearly broke it before being hauled down at the 29. In the second quarter, he drew the crowd's attention once again, this time with a 27-yard return out to Kent's 40 that was only a block or two away from being a scoring run.

McGruder had one other return, for 24 yards. "McGruder's performance is simply typical of that which can be produced by any number of players we weren't able to look at because of the three-game road trip to open the season," Blackledge said. Kent State was without tailback Jon Dwyer, who rushed for 90 yards in 30 carries against CMU two weeks ago. Dwyer is bothered by a pulled groin muscle. Also on the injured list are quarterback-punter Jeff Morrow (ribs), fullback Tim Starks (shoulder), defensive tackle Ray Wagner (knee), slot back J.

C. Stafford (knee), offensive center Dave Blotzer (shin), and punter John Metzger (ankle). Blackledge said some of that talent could get remarkably well amazingly fast, what with the home cooking they'll get for the second straight week. If that doesn't work, Blackledge said there are other players on the squad who did not make the traveling squad for Kent's first three games of the season who could help. TYPICAL OF this group, Blackledge said, is Mike McGru- By John Seaburn Beacon Journal staff writer The injury bug has taken a bite out of the talent on both sides of the football as Kent State's homecoming game with Western Michigan this Saturday draws closer.

Coaches Ron Blackledge of Kent State and Elliott Uzelac of WMU drew up short of using their injury reports as excuses', but each said the loss or questionable availability of talent due to injury could affect their team's performances. Uzelac, whose Broncos are a game behind Central Michigan in the chase for Mid-American Conference honors and find themselves in a must-win situation, said he lost heavily in the talent department when Western Michigan, was defeated by Michigan State two weeks ago. "The number of players was almost too many to count," Uzelac said. "Worse yet, they were injured to the point that we didn't get them back in time for last week's Bowling Green game. "With us facing Kent State this Saturday and in a situation where we have to win if we hope to stay close to Central Michigan, need all the talent we've got.

UZELAC SAID weak-side linebacker John Schuster, a 217-pound junior, tops the injured list with an ankle injury. Uzelac got some good news, however, when his trainers reported that strong-side offensive tackle Bud Sitko, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound senior, will return to action. Blackledge, hoping to extend Kent State's winning ways (the Flashes defeated Ohio 15-14, last week to end a nine-game losing streak) as well as its dominance of Western Michigan (Kent has beaten WMU in six of the last seven games), clearly could not overlook the injury issue in his camp. E. Michigan is slowed by injuries By Dan Thorn Beacon Journal staff writer Eastern Michigan University football coach Mike Stock doesn't really know what will happen next for his Hurons in this roller coaster season.

But he has special reason to hope the turn will be up when his team plays the University of Akron in the Rubber Bowl on Saturday afternoon. Stock is a Barber-ton native, and four of his players are from the Akron area. After losing the season opener 37-0 to Western Michigan, his Hurons upset Bowling Green 18-16. In the past two games, his team was overwhelmed 34-6 by Ohio University and 49-7 by Toledo. The Hurons had last week off to regroup, and Stock said he thinks his team took advantage of it.

"Practice has been pretty sharp," Stock said. "We spent a lot of time working on fundamentals that I felt we had abandoned after the win over Bowling Green." Stock, in his third year at Eastern, thought the Hurons were ready to play Mid-American Conference teams, but obviously his rebuilding job is not complete. "We lost some key people and showed we lost some character, too," Stock said. INJURIES in the offensive line have hurt the Hurons. They lost both starting tackles and both starting guards to knee injuries.

Additionally, defensive backs Ken Miller (ankle) and Brian Cotton (hamstring) are out for the Akron game. An injury to defensive tackle Cale Strickland in the season Mjke Jones becomes starter opener gave Barberton's Mike Jones, a sophomore, the opportunity to start. "I went in for the second half of the Western Michigan game and have started ever since," Jones said. "We proved that we could play against Bowling Green, and the week off we had got us back to the fundamentals we need to use Saturday against Akron." Freshman free safety Ed Poole, who played at Garfield, earned a starting position during fall practice. "I was surprised to be a starter at the beginning of the season," said Poole, whose brother, Larry, starred at Kent State University and played with the Cleveland Browns and Houston Oilers.

"I just came here expecting to play some." The other two Akron-area players are sophomore running back Vic Adamle of Kent, who might miss the game because of a shoulder injury, and freshman running back Anthony Wharton of Barberton, who has played little and will not make the aCX PRESTONE DUPONT a teSSHS FLUSH- I "3T fsIalerSH' Kk TrT N-FILL MsfaLEIJNTI antirust HARVEYWESTBURY BATTERY OR Interstate sealtpte PJ4 rfW ANTI-FREEZE JS TESTER THERMOSTATS tH I I SERIES 400 ft 800 Til If ff f7 If 160, 180, 195 DEGREES yy ZZSZZS REG. fl REG.
