Fund drive starts tonight "Future-Fest79," the fall fund-raising campaign of WKSU, gets under way tonight at 11 and runs through next Sunday.

The special drive, which will be introduced with the Fresh Air program and end with a live Bluegrass Jamboree, has a goal of raising $40,000 for the station's continued operations. Financial pledges will be accepted by the station's staff and a host of volunteers during the week. To make a contribution call 672-2132. The station will offer a first this year, a WKSU Membership Card, to those pledging at least $25 ($15 for students and retirees). The card, good for a year, will entitle the holder to 40 percent discounts on records at all Record Theatre stores and other discounts on record accessories and concert tickets.

By Jewell Cardwell Beacan Journal staff Writer A satellite and a $149,000 grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration will mean a big boost to WKSU, the public-radio station operated by Kent State University. Broadcasting power will be increased from the existing 7,500 watts to 50,000 watts, making the FM station (89.7 mHz) one of seven public-radio outlets in Ohio with that strong a signal. With the boost in power, set for completion next summer, the station will have the potential of reaching 1.3 million listeners in Northeast Ohio. JOHN PERRY, the station's general manager, said the cost of increasing the signal power is expected to exceed $200,000. With the grant and matching funds from area foundations, all but $17,000 of that has been raised, he said.

The funds, he explained, will be used to build a new tower with a directional antenna system and purchase new production equipment and a new transmitter. A National Public Radio satellite earth-receiving station is scheduled for completion later this month. This satellite and the new facilities being put in by WKSU will enable the station to reach listeners as far west as Medina, as far south as New Philadelphia, as far east as Sharon, and as far north as Cleveland. IN ADDITION, Perry said, the station will expand its programming, beginning Nov. 5, to include a special national news program.

Morning Edition. Morning Edition, Perry explained, would have a format similar to that of the evening fWiiVTtitfl1irHt, BEST BETS OF THE WEEK movie listings n4 the week's sports roudap. news program called AM Things Considered.
