It was the second time this season that Golden State had defeated Chicago in the closing seconds. World Free grabbed a rebound and sank a basket at the buzzer for a 120-119 victory in a November game. With the score 107-107 Thursday night, Free missed on a 20-footer, but Larry Smith got the rebound and scored On the inbounds play, the Bulls' David Greenwood launched a shot from 20 feet but it fell short and Golden State's Mike Gale snatched the rebound with 22 seconds left. Gale passed to Free who relayed to King, and the Warrior drove the base Associated Press HOUSTON The Houston Rockets have won five of their last six games and Coach Del Harris doesn't need the CIA to tell him why. "It's all in the shooting percentages," Harris said after a 52 percent shooting night produced a 109-101 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers Thursday night.

"We're still not among the league leaders but we've improved enough to make a difference." The Rockets were last in the National Basketball Association field goal and free throw percentages 21 games back when they started to jell. They're still 18th in field goal percentage but Harris likes the difference. "If we hadn't won some close games 7-8-8 L.Scarl 7-8-8 L.scari early, we'd be out of sight by now," Harris said. "We've won two overtime games, and 10 by four points or less. At least we had that." The Rockets had 31 points and 20 rebounds from Moses Malone Thursday night with a supporting cast headed by Bill Willoughby's 16 points and a season high 14 points by Major Jones.

Veteran guard Calvin Murphy scored only two points but the basket moved him up to 21st on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 16,961 points, one ahead of Bob Cousy. "You know you better take advantage of this North course," Miller said, "because the South is very tough, maybe 3, maybe 4 shots tougher." So Miller played the North course in a solid, no-bogey, 7-under-par 65 Thursday and tied Fuzzy Zoeller for the first-round lead in the $300,000 Wickes-Andy Williams-San Diego Open golf tournament. Zoeller also played the North, the shorter and easier of the two layouts used for the first two rounds.

Mark Lye, however, had a 66 at the tougher, South course. "As far as I'm concerned, Mark is the leader," Miller said. As an illustration of the relative difficulty of the two courses, the North yielded 12 scores of 68 or better, the South only three. The players switch courses for today's second round, with the last 36 holes to be played on the South. Gil Morgan was 1 shot off the pace after a 66 at the North.

Tom Watson, seeking to regain his position as golf's leading performer, topped the group at 67. Also at that figure were Mike Donald, Calvin Peete, Morris Hatal-sky and Bruce Fleisher. Fleisher played the tough South course, the others the North. Jack Nicklaus opened his 21st season on the tour with a 69, including a double bogey-6, on the South. "My goals are the same as always," he said.

"That's the majors (the Masters, U.S. and British Opens, the PGA). But I'd also like to get off to a faster start this year, get something in the victory column before the Masters." Huff, a West Virginia All-Amer-ican, says he never feared anything in a physical sense in his linebacking days with the Giants and the Washington Redskins. "But as a player I was afraid of failing, not playing well, not doing my job. And in recent years I started being afraid of failing to make the Hall of Fame.

That's how much it meant to me. But, after being afraid of failing to make it, I think that's why finally being voted in now makes it sweeter than if I'd made it right away," said Huff. He retired in 1969. Musso and Atkins push the Bears' list of Hall of Fame members to 20, counting George Hal-as, the franchise owner and former coach. Musso, a $90-a-game tackle when he started his pro career in 1933, had the distinction of playing against two future United States Presidents.

Musso, while playing for Milliken College, performed against a Eureka College 175-pound guard named Ronald "Dutch" Reagan. In the 1935 College All-Star game, he was pitted against Michigan's center, Gerald Ford. Jones did in 1980. Olsen was selected for a record 14 Pro Bowls in his 15-year career with Los Angeles, missing only in his final season in 1976. As it turned out, Danny Ainge didn't have to choose basketball. Basketball chose him.

AFTER A disastrous 1981 season with the Blue Jays, Ainge realized he was playing the wrong game. The Celtics, who held the NBA rights to Ainge, sued the Blue Jays in an effort to open negotiations. The Blue Jays, in turn, sought to protect their interests and sued the Celtics. When the bitter war of words had come to an end, the courts ruled in favor of Toronto and Ainge announced his retirement from baseball. By early Decem ber, however, the Celtics reached a compensatory agreement with the Blue Jays and signed Ainge to a Boston contract.

"I was the one who made the mistake," Danny Ainge said, "and now I have to live with it." Strangely, sometimes cruelly, the fans have not allowed Danny Ainge to put his mistake behind him. "Nobody likes to be booed, but I understand the fans' position completely," Ainge said. "When we go to the different cities to play, I hear a lot of the people yelling, 'Hey, "I understand people like that. I understand both sides of the situation. "I'd like to become a starter here at the beginning of next year when I have a full training camp behind me," he said. "That's definitely one of my goals for the future. Right now, whether I start or not isn't important. It's whether I play a few minutes and have the opportunity to learn." Coincidentally, Ainge's first season with the Celtics is similar to his first season with the Blue Jays.

He played for both teams without going through training camp. "This is tougher on me," Ainge said. "There's just so much more to learn. With the Blue Jays, it's just you and the pitcher. This game is not only physically demanding, it's also mentally demanding.

In my first three or four weeks in the NBA, I was lost on the court. Most of my mistakes came out of confusion about what I was supposed to do, or where I was supposed to be on a certain play." Gradually, Danny Ainge is beginning to resolve the confusion. Once it vanishes, he may put his mistakes behind him for good. pie of Toronto would call me a quitter either. I just made a mistake, that's all there is to it." Wisely, Boston coach Bill Fitch has not thrown Ainge to the lions.

He has been used sparingly. In 19 games, Ainge has averaged slightly less than 10 minutes of playing time and slightly less than four points per game. Asked how he intends to use Ainge as the Celtics make another mad dash toward another NBA championship, Fitch wryly replied, "I may use him at third base. "If you really want to know, his situation is a little like it was in baseball in that he's going to have to bring two gloves to the park and do a lot of work. "If he does it well, which he is certainly capable of doing, his future as a member of the Boston Celtics will be at point guard.

Ten years from now, when Tiny Archibald gets ready to hang it up, he'll be ready to step right in."
