Also, the Kent station's FM outlet gets a new set of call letters, becoming WNIR (100 mc.) effective Aug. 4.

The change from WKNT-FM is being made, the station said, to soften the association with Kent, WNIR's target audience including the Akron-Youngstown-Canton region. Concurrent with WKNT-AM's switch to country music, the station is bringing in Jerry Lee Goddard from Salem to conduct the afternoon drive time show (noon to 5). Steve Cherry is host for the station's 6 a.m. to noon music segments. Both the AM and FM operations will be housed in newly reconstructed studios and offices on Rt.

59 beginning next week. WKNT-AM (1520 kc.) operates on 1,000 waits of power, WNIR on 3,000 watts. THE STATION said it will continue its present format with WNIR programming, interspersing contemporary music with news, talk and features. On the station's broadcast schedule, the popular Howie Chizek show, involving talk, call-ins and a swap shop session, is being expanded to five hours, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The FM outlet's Dial-a-Date, which has attracted a large audience response, is programmed 7 p.m. to midnight with Jim Albright as host. Musical segments are presided over by Stan Piatt (5:30 to 10 a.m.), Bryce Wilson (3 to 7 p.m.), Pat Rose (midnight to 5:30 a.m.). WITH EXPIRATION of his contract, Channel 3 newsman Andy Guthrie is leaving the station Friday, WKYC having decided not to renew the reporter's pact. Guthrie has been with the station 10 years.

WKYC declined comment on the decision. Also, Channel 3 has said it will use sports anchorman Joe Pellegrino as play-by-play announcer for the three Cleveland Browns pre-season telecasts to be carried in August. Paul Warfield, former Browns wide receiver and once a reporter with Channel 3, will handle game analysis. The WKYC telecasts are Browns at Kansas City Aug. 9 (at 9 p.m.), at Chicago Aug.

23 (7 p.m.), at Minnesota Aug. 30 (at 9 o'clock). WKSU-FM to carry satellite broadcasts WKSU-FM (89.7) will offer live broadcasts via satellite of an opera, an operetta, an orchestral concert and a talk by a noted ballet dancer this weekend and next. Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffman will be broadcast from the Salzburg (Austria) Festival Saturday from noon to 4:30 p.m. This opening performance of the festival's 60th season will feature Placido Domingo, Anne Howells, Jose van Dam and Christiane Eda-Pierre, with James Levine conducting.

Gilbert and Sullivan's sparkling operetta The Pirates of Penzance, from the Cincinnati Opera, will be broadcast Saturday from 8 to 10 p.m., with Jack Eddelman, Josepha Gayer and others. A concert from the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado will be broadcast Aug. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and William Schuman's Colloquies for Horn and Orchestra. A speech by dancer Rudolf Nureyev from the National Press Club in Washington, D. will be broadcast from 1 to 2 p.m.

on Aug. 4. N. Y. Philharmonic on TV The Public Broadcasting Service's Live from Lincoln Center series will offer two concerts by the New York Philharmonic in the fall (locally on Channels 25, 45 and 49).

On Sept. 24, a live telecast of the Philharmonic's gala concert honoring violinist Isaac Stern's 60th birthday, conducted by music director Zubin Mehta, will originate from Avery Fisher Hall in New York at 8 p.m. Verdi's Requiem, to be telecast 22 at 8 p.m., will be conducted by Mehta and feature soprano Montserrat Caballe, mezzo-soprano Bianca Berini, tenor Michail Sve-tlev and bass Martti Talvela.
