Assistant coach F.rio Shanabor-ger also was accused by the NCAA of lying about recruiting practices on four occasions. The NCAA last week placed Cleveland State on throe years' probation and banned its men's basketball team from two years of post season competition for alleged violations of recruiting rules. Mackey and Shanaborgor have said they will not comment on the charges because an appeal Is pending. Merle Unin, Cleveland State's assistant athletic director and sports information director, said he was stunned the NCAA hail decided to talk about the charges in detail prior to an NCAA appeal hearing. "1 can't Mlove they've decided to (talk)," Levin said.

BOSTON 122, WASHINGTON 102 Larry Bird scored 27 points and added seven assists, leading the Boston Celtics over the Washington Bullets in Landover, Md. Robert Parish scored the game's first four points for Boston, and the Bullets never evened the score. The Celtics led by as many as 10 points in the opening period, which ended 33-26 On their way to a 69-55 halftime lead the Celtics enjoyed a 16-point advantage, and in the third period opened a 22-point bulge before settling for a 96-8 1 lead.

NEW JERSEY 104, SAN ANTONIO 98 Ben Coleman scored a career-high 22 points and hit four crucial free throws In the final minute as the New Jersey Nets broke an 1 1-game losing streak by deteating the San Antonio Spurs in East Rutherford, N.J. The victory was only the third in 18 games for New Jersey, which had not won since beating the New York Knicks on Nov.

The Hawks held the Pacers to nine points, an NBA low for one period this season. MILWAUKEE 103, NEW YORK 98 Paul Pressey matched his season high with 25 points, and the Milwaukee Bucks held New York without a field goal tor more than lour minutes down the stretch to beat the Knicks in New York. Late Monday result UTAH 116, SEATTLE 95 Thurl Bailey scored 29 points, and the Utah Jazz, behind a 21-5 run in the first period, defeated the Seattle SuperSonics in Salt Lake City John Stockton added a career-high 26 points, including 1 1 of Utah's first 14 points.

Late Monday UTAH 116, SEATTLE 95 Continued from page Bl for those athletes at Cleveland State who must serve the time for what the coaches apparently did. They are the losers, they are the ones being unjustly punished. They miss the tournaments, they miss the television appearances, because of matters beyond their grasp and control. Someday, the NCAA will stumble across a sense of fairness in such cases. Those athletes judged not guilty will be able to transfer and immediately become eligible at another school.

While it is at it, the NCAA ought to sock it to the guilty coaches, Make them stay for the duration of the probation, let them have to pay for what they have done. That or see to it they cannot coach at another institution affiliated with the NCAA for the duration of the penalty. The rules must be made tougher, the penalties must get tougher. If the NCAA is going to exist, then let it exist with purpose. Let it get after those who cheat and let it punish them.

Otherwise, forget it. Forget the rules, forget what college sport is supposed to be all about. Is college sport supposed to be about bringing in players who did not finish high school? Is college sport supposed to be about recruiting players with no hope whatsoever of doing college work? Is college sport supposed to be nothing more than a self-serving batch of hypocrisy? Are the rules there to be broken, and so boldly, in the name of building a winning team? These are among the questions to be answered on many campuses, surely not only on the Cleveland State campus. Going big-time, the right way or the wrong way. takes. Cot the players, get the victories, get the crowds, get the dollars. Hey, has anybody ever stopped to wonder why? Is Cleveland State a better school for having done well in the NCAA Tournament two seasons ago? Will, for that matter, the University of Akron bo a greater institution for having played a football game against Auburn? Does anybody ever wonder about these matters? So now Cleveland State is yammering about an appeal. Swell. You join the NCAA, you understand the meaning for bettor or for worse of membership and then you threaten to go to court if things don't go your way.

That's good, Cleveland State. I get to spend more time with my wife Jean, and the Cavs made me an offer I just couldn't refuse." Tait was asked to suggest someone to replace him on the Indians' telecasts. "My first choice is my old partner, Jack (Corrigan)," Tait said. "As for the other position, I'm sure that there will be a lot of candidates." It is a safe bet that Bruce Drennan will try to get back into the Indians' picture. Drennan is filling in on WWWE's Sportsline Show and is the leading candidate to replace Pete Franklin as the full-time host. Drennan and Tait did the Indians on WUAB from 1980-82.

Denny Price, 50, is a former Phoenix Suns assistant and currently the head basketball coach at Phillips College. When Johnson took over for Price, the rookie from California displayed the quickness and defense that made him the No. 7 pick in the draft. Three times he just blew by Derek Harper for layups.

He hit the big men under the basket for easy layups and had only six assists compared to one turnover in 22 minutes. "You can just see Kevin's confidence growing," Wilkens said. "A game like this means so much to a rookie point guard. He now knows he can handle the ball in crunch time and that the team will respond to him." NOTEBOOK Daugheriy had his usual reliable game 21 points and live assists. He recovered from an 0-tor-7 third quarter to score nine points in the fourth period.

"It's true that I have been getting paid from the radio station recently, but early in my career with the Cavs, my checks came from (Cavs owner) Nick Miletti.
