They are the losers, they are the ones being unjustly punished.

They miss the tournaments, they miss the television appearances, because of matters beyond their grasp and control. Someday, the NCAA will stumble across a sense of fairness in such cases. Those athletes judged not guilty will be able to transfer and immediately become eligible at another school. While it is at it, the NCAA ought to sock it to the guilty coaches. Make them stay for the duration of the probation, let them have to pay for what they have done.

That or see to it they cannot coach at another institution affiliated with the NCAA for the duration of the penalty. The rules must be made tougher, the penalties must get tougher. If the NCAA is going to exist, then let it exist with purpose, IM it get after those who cheat and let it punish them. Otherwise, forget it. Forget the rules, forget what college sport is supposed to be all about.

Is college sport supposed to be about bringing in players who did not finish high school? Is college sport supposed to be about recruiting players with no hope whatsoever of doing college work? Is college sport supposed to be nothing more than a self-serving batch of hypocrisy? Are the rules there to be broken, and so boldly, in the name of building a winning team? These are among the questions to be answered on many campuses, surely not only on the Cleveland State campus. Going big-time, the right way or the wrong way. Got the players, pet Ihe victories, get the crowds, got the dollars. Hey, has anybody ever stopped to wonder why? Is Cleveland State a better school for having done well in the NCAA Tournament two seasons ago? Will, for that matter, the University of Akron be a greater institution for having played a football game against Auburn? Does anybody ever wonder almut these matters? So now Cleveland Slate is yammering about an appeal.

Swell, You join the NCAA, you understand the meaning for better or for worse of membership and then you threaten to go to court if things don't go your way. That's good, Cleveland State. Wouldn't it make more sense to say you're sorry, to vow to make amends, to get on with trying to do things the right way in college athletics? Mi Joe Tait Cavs made me an offer I just couldn't refuse." Tait was asked to suggest someone to replace him on the Indians' telecasts. "My first choice is my old partner, Jack (Corrigan)," Tait said. "As for the other position, I'm sure that there will be a lot of candidates." It is a safe bet that Bruce Drennan will try to get back into the Indians' picture. Drennan is Sunday," Price said. "But he didn't want my mother to tell me how bad it was.

They just said he went into the hospital with chest pains. I didn't find out until Monday night that it was serious." Price traveled to his hometown of Enid, today to be at his father's side. Denny Price, 50, is a former Phoenix Suns assistant and currently the head basketball coach at Phillips College. When Johnson took over for Price, the rookie from California displayed the quickness and defense that made him the No. 7 pick in the draft.

Three times he just blew by Derek Harper for layups. He hit the big men under the basket for easy layups and had only six assists compared to one turnover in 22 minutes. "You can just see Kevin's confidence growing," Wilkens said. "A game like this means so much to a rookie point guard. He now knows he can handle the ball in crunch time and that the team will respond to him." Drennan and Tait did the Indians on WUAB from 1980-82. With the Cavs, Tait will continue to do the games on radio, he will be in charge of the team's speaker's bureau, and he'll put together a radio network for the team next season. The Cavs' contract with WWWE expires at the end of this season. Since Force owner Bart Wolstein is one of the new owners of WWWE, there has been speculation that the Force will replace the Cavs on the station.

"I just don't know where the Cavs will be next year," Tait said. Does working for the Cavs mean Tait will alter his sometimes candid style? "I don't see why it will," Tait said. "It's true that I have been getting paid from the radio station recently, but early in my career with the Cavs, my checks came from (Cavs owner) Nick Miletti. When I did the Bulls and Nets games, I was on the payroll for those teams. I just am myself on the air." NOTEBOOK Daugherty had his usual reliable game 21 points and five assists.
