That's when her fiance, promising artist Harry Patherton (Michael Nouri), took her home to meet the folks. "It was muggy," Val remembers. "You were vicious." Sure enough, Harry's mother, Barbara (Ms. Dewhurst), takes an instant dislike to the shy, nervous Val. "You're marrying me, not her," Harry keeps saying, but Barbara's strong-willed nature forces its way between the two of them.

Val proves as strong as Barbara. Despite frequent flare-ups, a degree of respect and even affection creeps into their relationship. Still, the marriage is jeopardized. The resentments take a heavy toll until a tragedy forces the two women to share their feelings. Based on Gillian Martin's novel Living Arrows, the sensitively written, acted and directed Between Two Women eschews cliches as it covers some rough emotional territory.

33). The ABC Monday Night Movie presentation finds Ms. Fawcett holding her own with a co-star of towering stature, Colleen Dewhurst. Imagine telling someone in 1976 that Farrah Fawcett (then Farrah Fawcett- Majors) could tackle a serious drama In her introduction to The Spencer Tracy Legacy, a PBS documentary airing tonight (at 8 on WVIZ-Ch. 25 and at 9 on WNEO-Ch.

45WEAO-Ch. 49), Katharine Hepburn admits that the audience is probably thinking, "Well, she's prejudiced." "Damn right, I am," says Tracy's frequent co-star and off-screen confidante. "Spencer was in a class by himself." During a Hollywood career that started in 1930 and ended with his death in 1967, Spencer Tracy made 74 films. He rarely got to play a truly great role, yet his acting style did indeed put him in a class by himself. The Spencer Tracy Legacy is a valentine to the two-time Oscar winner (Captains Courageous and Boys Town).

Those expecting Ms. Hepburn to break silence about their off-screen relationship will be disappointed. While there is plenty of biographical matching her scene after scene with Colleen Dewhurst. The stereotypes are avoided, though, and the riveting two-hour production movingly explores a complex relationship that is altered by the crises and joys of about 15 years.
