Hernandez, 30, will be in second place on the Mets payroll.

The only one to top his salary is slugging outfielder George Foster. The new contract, which runs from 1985 through 1989, is worth $5 million over the life of the agreement and $3.4 million in deferred payments. The pact also calls for incentive bonuses of $100,000 should Hernandez win the NL's Most Valuable Player award, $50,000 if he is second or third in the MVP voting and $100,000 if he is the MVP in the World Series. "I decided to stay here at the end of last season," said Hernandez. "If I didn't think the Mets could turn it around, I wouldn't have stayed here even for $15 million." Hernandez was obtained by the Mets from St.

Louis last June 15 for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey. He hit .297 for the entire season. More baseball Attorneys for Atlanta Braves pitcher Pas-cnal Perez petitioned the Supreme Court to move his drug trial to another city, alleging the courts in Santiago, Dominican Republic, had been subjected to "psychological pressures" in the case. The appeals court in Santiago has ruled that Perez, held without bail, must stand trial on drug trafficking charges. He was arrested Jan.

9 with a half-gram of cocaine in his wallet. Cy Young award winner LaMarr Hoyt signed a 1-year contract with the Chicago White Sox for $900,000. Hoyt had been scheduled to go to arbitration. He was asking for $945,000 and the White Sox had offered $825,000. Hoyt was 24-10 last season.

Football Bandy Vataha, owner of the New Orleans Breakers, talked with 2-time college dropout Marcus Dopree but they kept the conversation general in nature, the United States Football League team said. A Breakers spokesman said Dupree's adviser, Ken Fairley of Hattiesburg, also told them the back was talking with teams in the National Football League. San Diego Chargers running back James Brooks, a day after saying the team was "good" to him, said he wants to play out his contract "and be done with it." Brooks said this week that he might jump to the USFL. BASKETBALL Hernandez Hoyt Soccer New York Arrows goalie Zoltan Toth will miss Wednesday's Major Indoor Soccer League All-Star game because of a groin injury. Baltimore Blast coach Kenny Cooper named goalie Scott Manning of the Blast to replace Toth on the East squad.

Manning is the fourth-leading goalie in the MISL with a 4.31 goals-against average. Nathan Scherr, a construction executive and owner of 1982 Preakness winner Aloma's Ruler, has purchased the MISL's Baltimore Blast from Bernle Rodin. Scherr would not disclose the price. The deal is to go into effect June 15. Golf Calvin Peete shot a 3-under-par 69 and took the lead after two rounds of the $500,000 Hawaiian Open.

Tom Watson missed the cut for the third straight week. Alice Miller shot a 4-under par 68 and took a 2-stroke lead over Lanri Peterson after two rounds of the $175,000 Ladies Professional Golfers Association Classic in Sarasota, Fla. Miller, who also shot a 68 to share the first-day lead with -Jane Lock, finished the day with 136. Other sports Adrian Branch, a starting guard for the University of Maryland who was suspended from the basketball team recently because of a marijuana possession arrest, was convicted of the misdemeanor Friday but was reinstated with the team. There was no immediate decision about the status of Steve Rivers, a reserve guard who was arrested and convicted with Branch of the same misdemeanor charge.

Molly Lang, a Kent State freshman, qualified for the NCAA regional diving championships with a 3-meter diving score of 253.85 against Youngstown State. Pete Weber is the top seed for today's finals of the PBA's $125,000 Angle Open in Florissant, Mo. Pete Couture is second, Marshall Hoi-man third, Nelson Burton Jr. fourth and Paul Gibson fifth. Gries, who has two other lawsuits pending against Modell, called the first round of bids "an-; other instance of autocratic control which could benefit defendant Modell's own financial interest to the possible determent of the Browns." Gries compared the radio negotiations to the Browns' 1982 purchase from Modell of the Cleve land Stadium Corp. for $6 million. Bailey said the WJW bid was the best the Browns had received. Modell's attorneys called Gries' charges "irresponsible" and pointed out that Modell was a WJW stockholder in 1979 when WHK won its last 3-year contract. Modell owns 53 percent of the Browns stock.

Although he lost the Browns rights for 1984, WJW general manager Art Caruso said he By Peter Phipps Beacon Journal staff writer Cleveland's WHK radio will keep the Cleveland Browns football broadcast contract for another year after matching a bid by a station owned in part by Browns president Art Modell. The Browns had chosen to give control of the team's radio network, which includes WAKR radio in Akron, to WJW radio of which Modell is a one-third owner. But WHK, under terms of a 3-year contract, had the right to equal WJW's offer. WHK vice president Ronald D. Jones said the station decided last week to match WJW's bid and keep the contract it has held since 1967.

It is believed WHK will pay the Browns $500,000 to broadcast the team's games next season. Neither the Browns or the ra-(dio station executives would comment on that estimate. Modell's station had originally made a bid for a 3-year broadcast contract that WHK's Jones doubts his station owners would have even tried to equal. In an earlier round of bidding last fall WJW had offered to give the Browns an ownership interest in the station that Modell has admitted has lost money every year from 1977 to 1982. The station's latest financial figures are unavailable.

However, Cleveland busines-man Robert Giles, who controls 43 percent of the Browns stock, filed suit Dec. 15 charging the Browns "have so structured the bidding as to make it impossible for stations other than WJW to effectively compete." Gries lost his bid for an injunction but claims success at blocking an award to WJW. James Bailey, the Browns executive vice president, said that Gries' suit was a factor in the 7T 7275 or 376-6169. Meanwhile, tickets for the Browns' basketball game with the Pittsburgh Steelers at Canton's Civic Center Feb. 26 cost $3.50 general admission and $4.50 reserved advanced, and $4 and $5 at the door. Tickets are on sale at Camelot Music centers in Summit, Mellett, Belden Village and Carnation City malls as well as at Dumont Sporting Goods, Canton CYC, Canton Jewish Center, Canton Police Boys' Club, Canton Civic Auditorium and Canton's Northeast Community Center, with proceeds benefiting the community center. Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Doug Dieken will be the honored guest when the Browns Booster Club of Akron holds its annual player of the year roast at Guy's Restaurant March 9.

Dieken was selected from a group of monthly honorees that included Ozzie Newsome, Tom Cousineau, Cody Risien, Matt Bahr and Clay Matthews. Roasters will include sports columnist Tom Melody and sportswriter Ed Meyer of the Akron Beacon Journal, NFL referee Fritz Graf of Akron, former Cleveland Press sports columnist Dan Coughlin, sports commentator Jim Mueller of WKYC-TV, and Browns trainer Leo Murphy. Tickets are $15 at Ohio Tux and Hummel Insurance. For ticket information, telephone 762- Art Modell would try again later this year when it is expected the Browns will seek bids for a long-term contract. "If I was interested this time," said Caruso, "I'll be interested next time." Next time WHK will not be able to hold onto the Browns contract simply by matching the best bid from its competitors.
