The 45-year-old Ryan rocked the Milwaukee Brewers with a 96 mph fastball Saturday night. But he couldn't get his first victory of the year and 3 1 5th of his career when the bullpen let him down. The Brewers didn't think Ryan looked like he was over the hill. sure looks strong to me," said Houston Astros teamfneta PhD Garner, now manager of the Brewers. "He looked just like he's looked the last 20 years and I guess the way he'll look for the next 20 years." Ryan struck out the first five Brewers, two short of the American League record by Chicago's Joe Cowley.

Two infield singles and a walk got Ryan in trouble in the third. Robin Yount doubled with the bases loaded for three runs. However, Ryan finished strong, going six innings with nine strikeouts, two walks and allowing just five hits. "I thought I had pretty good stuff," said Ryan, i who has thrown seven no-hitters. Ryan left with a 4-1 3 lead, but Terry Mathews couldn't hold it.

Texas eventually won the game 5-4. It was Ryan's home debut after two visits to the disabled list and three failed starts on the road. He had been bothered with a strained left leg calf and sore Achilles' tendon. PHILLIES TO ACTIVATE JORDAN The Phillies on Sunday said that Ricky Jordan will be activated from the disabled list and that Wes i Chamberlain has been optioned to Triple-A Scran-ton-Wilkes Barre of the International League. Jor-dan, 26, suffered a fractured jaw on March 1 1 when hit in the face by a line drive dunng batting practice in spring training.

He had played in extended spring games before playing three games for Scranton-t Wilkes Barre in which he went 5-for-15. LAMONT'S MOTHER DIES Chicago White Sox manager Gene LaMont's mother died early Sunday morning, and he immediately left the team to join his family in Chicago. Coach Joe Nossek was left in charge of the team for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

LaMont's mother had been ill for some time, White Sox officials said. The funeral will be held Tuesday, and LaMont will then join the team for their game that night at Milwaukee. Chicago has an off day today. I TRANSACTIONS The California Angels placed catcher Lance Parrlsh on the 1 5-day disabled list retroactive to May 5. abrhbl Plunk managed to raise his hand, and the ball bruised his right thumb. "The ball never really hurt my eye," he said. "It was just kind of a shinning thing. But even now, my eye isn't sore, just swollen. When it happened, my main concern was whether I could see.

"If it wasn't for this bruise on my thumb, I could probably pitch today." Plunk said he's never been hit in the head with a line drive before, but he has taken baseballs off several other parts of his body. "I've deflected balls away from my head," he said. "I've gotten hit several times on my lower body, but I don't really think about that stuff." NOTEBOOK Mark Lewis sat out Sun-day's game with a sore back, which was attributed to the pounding a player takes running on artificial turf. "By the seventh inning last night, I could barely bend over," Lewis said. "But their doctor looked at me and said this happens to their players all the time because of the turf." Felix Fermln played shortstop.

Before the game, Mike Hargrove sat in the manager's dressing room with his right arm wrapped in ice. "I don't know what I did," Hargrove said. "I woke up and my arm hurt." Thome went 1 -for-2 with two walks Saturday night in his first game at Canton-Akron as General Manager John Hart watched from the grandstand. Thome (sprained right hand) Is on a 20-day rehabilitation assignment. Sandy Alomar did not have the stitches removed from his hand Sun'day as planned.

It probably will be done Tuesday in Kansas City. "This was the first time he had pitched in a year. "Then, too, I didn't think he threw as well in the game as he had in the bullpen." London scored a run in the first, but Canton-Akron went on top with two runs in its half of the inning. Ken Ramos walked and moved to third on Jim Thome's single and after Kyle Washington's walk loaded the bases, Tracy Sanders' single scored Ramos and Thome. Canton-Akron got two more runs in the third on Thome's walk and singles by Washington, Sanders and Miguel Flores.

"I think this is the best atmosphere on the club at any time this season," Graham said of the team's resurgence. "I credit that partially to the shakeup of the team caused by player moves. Players are looser, more confident." London got a lone run in the sixth when Rod Robertson walked, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Greg Sparks' single to right.
