A. Bnrke. Gen. Butler read the statement made by lJajor Burke to the Associated rren.4 on tebroary tb, and IrhJch was said to contain a foil ajnopsis of too hatter, and interrogated the witness on nweific rtoirif tj. Why did yob leaTe ont "flilibttster- ing Was that not an important point A.

Lne words lull and irank are your own- Mr. Hiscock The motive for this man leaving out the fillibusttring item is un natural. Gen. Butler (hotly) I say it is not.and 1 intend to prove it. Witness then said that the had asreed 10 io au tney could to stop blubusteriliir.

6 a -T Gen. Butler said ht was detirous tit knowing why witness had failed to Incor porate the nlubustmng paragraph In his dispatch to the Associated Pretis. It was the most important part of the statement. and yet it was omitted. Now.

I want to know the object for which this omission wks made, and I shall have it. Alaior Burke then said he was actum as tno only authorized agent of hicholls' government, to whom he made his reports. The approval of his State government and the people of his State was suffi cient for him. uen lfutlor said that it wait ilam to him that all papers in tho AVormley Hotel conference could not possibly be all on one side, and he was detei mined to take advantage of the broadest line. The original question on flllibustering was repeated.

Major Burke replied "My feastn fof its omission was probably from pruden tial motive, and that one of the members from Louisiana should state his views on the floor of the House. It was our desire that the substance of what we expected should be before the country and understood by the country at the time, in order to guard against any violation of the assurances given, and in order that if they were violated and evil effects followed in Louisiana, our action would be justified by the Gen. Butk then handed witness a book, and asked him if the statement contained therein was made by Mr. Levy on the floor of the House. He replied that it was.

Q- Was it known by the Democratic side of the House that the Agreement had been made to stop flllibustering A. It was substantially stated to them that the sooner the count was permitted to proceed in Louisiana the sooner troops could be withdrawn and necessary arrangements completed for the 4 th of March. I believe the count would have been completed even if this arrangement had not been made, because members of Con cress who favored the nllibustering aide did so on representations from Louisiana that thereby tre Pod Id Hr TMriio wfetefe --l-t ev nnr tAte government. Many of them showed letters and telegrams from their constituents condemning dilatoty action and that delay in counting the votes before March 4th would be highly detrimental to the country at lirge. ben the closing day came we all fmrwd.

I then telegraphed Nicholls that despite all our previous arrangements the count would have to go on. Q. What or who was the high authority that satisfied you that unless you were very much deceived your plant would be 6Ttecessful? A. Stanley Matthews was one, lhe colored people did not reeard Nicholls as objectionable. J.

T. Wilmer, Bishop of Louisiana, went to Washington to describe the situation to Hayes and Grant, and that any attempt to install Iackard would result in anarchy and bloodshed. Q. What was the meaning of Wilmer sayicg ''Please don't be disturbed in Louisiana A. I understood by that that Hayes would not attempt to place the Packard government over Louisiana.

I have no doubt that the Governor, as well as myself, distinctly understood the meaning of "not to be disturbed." Q. Who made the statement to you that on giving up two Senators to the He-publicans yon conki have Louisiana? A. Information that such was the disposition to be made of the Nicholls government was imparted to me by Governor Nicholls, who had been so advised by one of the at Washington. It was given me for the purpose of ascertaining fully all particulars concerning it, and keep him and the Legislature advised. Witness said thA guarantees and assurances to be given by Huycs were agreed upon by the Democratic or Nicholls overnmcnt on February 26th and 27th, and afterwards endorsed by Sherman and Matthews on the part of liayes.

On March 4 th had a general conversation with the President, but there were too many people present to admit of going into detail as to the contemplated state of affairs in Louisiana. There was nothing of a specific nature said. Mr. Hayes expressed himself as conciliatory towards the South. Witness then analyzed the interview with Smith, printed in a New Orleans paper.

Most of it was entirely imaginary. He denied that he ever told any one that Mr. Hayes in person had authorized guarantees or assurances. Adjourned. MThMrar aai Beat auad Denals.

The London Times reprints the report of the interview between Butler and Kearney, and has an editorial about them and the National party, ia-which it saj6 of the latter "It might become a serious danger to the republic if it wtre possible for the discontented and ignorant masses who have attached themselves to it to pool their issues and combine against capital. There are particularly no limits in a democratic country to the power of a majority driven by strong passions, and hundreds of thousands of workingmen who have felt the pinch of hard times and been thrown out of work or had to subsist on lower wages are urged by the moat powerful forces to come together, as Kearney puts it, for bread and butter. But it is doubtful whether those who rave inost wildly against society are not as firmly wedded, each of them, to his own theories of reconstruction as the most superstitious fanatics of the old-world creeds." The Times then briefly summarizes the proceedings before Congressman Hewitt's committee, and concludes as follows "The United States would have more to fear from the Butlers and Kearneys if their followers were less patisicnate, les ignorant of the practical limitations of political action and less torn by internal jealousies." The report that he received two wounds was entirely incorrect, as but one shot was fired, taking effect near the shoulder, and not being at all serious. Ladies and gentlemen to the number of about 100 were on the steamboat wharf this morning to take the steamer Richard iytoekton for Cape May, and were not only disappointed, but angry, to see her pass by without so much as raising her flag, and language not complimentary to all concerned was indulged in by the men. A large number of tickets were sold here by the Jefferson Club and the money will, of course, be refunded, but in the future there will be no necessity for any one to come here to dispose of any, as our citizens are not often caught twice in the same trap.
