Wilmington, Delaware, September 2. Knocks From New York Demo- crats. POSITION OF SENATOR DAVID B. BILL Thousands of Kyes Are on the New York Senator, Waiting For Him to Announce His Views Se wall Puts the Cold Clause in His Contracts. Regular Cor.

of "The Morning News:" PHILADELPHIA, Sept 15. William Jennings Bryan is getting a good many very hard and heartless knocks from, tbe sold Dsrooerats of New York. Besides the lashing which Cookran gave him soma r.u(to. vwLRiftu save uim wma ae. William P.

Sheehan, the repre- New T.ork ln jjc-iiiui anu an nounces that ho is opposed to the revolu tionary doctrines of the Chicago platform. Line thousands of other good Democrats Mr. Sheehan places patriotism above par-tisanism and he has no hesitancy in say ing so. He says labor must bear the burden ol misfortune that would come if Fopocracy triumphed. Thus it will be seen that another powerful leader has ar rayed himself against Bryan and his false ana; fosllshi teachings.

But where Is David Bennett Hill? t'p to the present time Mr. Hill has failed to And sufficient courage with which to assert himself or defino his position. His silence has hem construed into meaning thati he- will sooner or later Join the Bryan forces, but those whs pretend to know Hill best say that he remains in hie present paislve state for reasons peculiarly ani specifically his own. No doubt about it. Hill has always opposed Cleveland in important issues, and it maybe that, because of the President's aggressive attitude toward Bryan, Mr.

Hill prefers silence. Whatever the real reasons may be or whether they are of a public or private nature, Hill has undoubtedly injured himself by allowing the Popocrats to banter. his name. The time is ripe for every man to announce where he stands. The country is being threatened by mu who would ruin lis credit, destroy its financial institutions, rob it of its honor, weaken its industries and take from the mouth of the wage-earner his hard-earnel bread.

Is It any wonder then that true should rally to keep the flag unsullied? Is it any wonder then that thousands of eyes are on David Bennett Hill, watering his every' movement? But Mr. Charles A. Dana of the N3w York Sun, the reputed friend of Hill, keeps right oa in his fight for honest money. He Insists that Bryan ism must be defeated at any eost, and like Sheehan he proposes to labor for honor and the flag regardless of party ties. Are net such men as these to be admired? Will not their names shine upon the pages of history in generations to eome? They foresee the terrible results that are sure to follow in the event of Bryan's election, and have the patriotism to throw aside all political sentiment for the good of tkeir country.

And the list of Danaa and sieerians ts growiag every day in every state of the Union where men think and investigate for themselves. It has transpiresl that like Mr. Altgeld, Hr. Sewnll, the Democratic candidate for the Vice-Presidency, takes care to insert a gold clause in hi leases. His big ship Sus-.

quehansia, which is loading a cargo of coal oil at this port for Japan, has the following clause in her freight contract: "The party of the second part agree to pay to said party cf the first part, or agent, for the use of said vessel, during the voyage aforesaid, cents. United States gold, on each and every case delivered." Now, I wonder, what will the silver advocates say to that? Thesr silver champion demanding gold! Their silver leader fortifying himself in case the cause he espouses should win! Verily constancy is a jewel not in the keep ing of such men as Sewall and Altgeld. They would deceive the public while they protect themselves. They cry silver before the laborer and demand gold behind his back. They would have the poor man paid in dishonest fifty-three cent dollars while they expect honest, one-hundred-cent dollars.

And these are the men and the principles for whom and which Bryan is speaking. How can the silver people be so blind? Mr. Bryan has at last received official notification of his nomination by the Populists, and this being the third budget of such news he has received it will, be extremely Interesting to observe what he says in reply. The Populists say they will exact no promises farther than those Mr. Bryan has made in his public utterances and exemplified in a life devoted to the welfare of the race.

How thoughtful tho Populists are becoming, but they will have still mora time to exercise their minds after the third of next November. Perhaps Maine has had something to do with the cooling of the Populists' hot heads. Fifty thousand plurality is a pretty good vote for the Pine Tree State, and enough to cool the brain ot any demented man. But Maine is only one state of the many that will be heard from in the first week of November and the indications are that "there are others" which will roll up their sleeves and go at Mr. Bryan in the same forcible style.

Big Tom Reed is truly a big man after all. Local politicians are having a merry time among themselves guessing whwre Senator Quay intends to jump to save what little remaining power he wields this city. It is beginning to be pretty well understood now that Quay has been fooling some of his old-time friends, and it is scarcely necessary to add that these old-time workers, who have stood by the Beaver senator through all sorts of weather. are making preparations to save themselves. Quay has undertaken to accom-plsh too much in the dark.

The Wana-maker people have repeatedly stated that Quay would support Wanamaker for the United States Senate: the Penrose fol lowing has asserted the same thing of Penrose, and the Cameron crowd has said that Quay would throw his Influence toward Senator Cameron and champion his re-election. But Quay took the trouble one day last week to come all the way from New York to deny what he termed "silly stories." "outright lies" and "newspaper fakes." It occasionally happens that newspaper eorresportpents force men to hide behind just such subterfuges as these to get at the real fact, which has been known to a select few several weeks in advance. Mr. Quay knorws in his heart whom he wilt endeavor tjo support and he is aware, too, that there are others who know the same thing. -Time will tell the truth.

"Many magnates with coin to spend cast longing eyes en Jeremiah, with th result that Manager Long of the Wil-mingtons attempted to flirt with at leas half a dozen of them, Mr. Long put great south-paw on market and the began a tour of the major league cities to. give the managers who aspired Jerry's services a chance to try him befo; they bought him. One week ago Nops pitched for Philadelphia against the Ch cago Club and won his game. The agrie roent between Manager Long and Messrs.

Reach, and Rogers was that Jerry shou pitch one game in this city and one i some other city as a test of his ability. and that the Philadelphia Club should have first claim on the pitcher at cer tain price. "Mr. Nops was lookod upon as a fixture for the Phillies. Contrary to expecta Hons, however, he did not' go to Washing; ton to pitch for the Phillies, and it wc.

somewhat of a surprise late-on Friday night, when the telegraphers ticked over the wires the message' informing the base ball world that Nops would pitch a tri game for Baltimore the next day, and that Jerry didn't want to play with th Phillies. Brooklyn only made seven hi; off the south-raw twirler on Saturday and it was stated that "Manager Hanlan had purchased Nops' release for some thing like $2000, and Manager Long ex peers to secure the services of Shortstop Gallagher from the Phillies next season "That the Philadelphia Club should al low such a promising player to sli through their fingers occasioned, mu surprise among their patrons. The more valuable the player turns out to be for the Baltimore, the heavier the damages we can claim. A3 regards Gul lagher, whom we purchased from WI mington, I do not think he will play far that club in '97." MANAGER LONG GOES HOME.

He Will Return, However, to Look Over the Base Ball Field. Manager A. Long of. the Wilmington Base Ball Club will leave this morning for his home ia Lowell, Mass. He expects to return in a few weeks, however, to look over the base ball field and decide whether to remain in Wilmington next season or to remove his team to Reading.

Manager Long made many friends during his resi dence in Wilmington, and they will regret to see him leave. It is also hoped by those who admire base ball that he will return to this city and decide to locate here next season. The Wilmington base ball team of the season just closed has been one of the most unfortunate ones in the whole league. It is admitted by those who have watched the team that the club was not a strong one in the early part of the season. The players who were secured did not fulfil their prom ise of becoming stars with a few excep tions.

Gradually they were weeded out of the team and new men took their places, but net so rapidly as tbe public desired to see. There was one very good reason why they were not. The patronage given the local club was poor, and at times the at tendance here was not sufficient to pay the amount guaranteed the visiting club. In spite of these difficulties the team was strengthened from time to time until It was the very strongest one in the league. It defeated all of the teams at home and won half of its games away from home.

Then its misfortunes began. Jerry Nops was Injured and this was followed by Kia-sella getting a bad hand. Mclntyre was slightly injured; Spratt sprained an ankle and Was compelled to quit playing. AVise becker and Cargo were also injured, and for weeks there was scarcely a game in which some accident did not befall the home team. From this misfortune it never recovered, but it finished in fourth place despite, it all.

While all of the league teams were robbed by the umpires Wilmington appeared to get the worst of it. It is not likely that any of these things will occur next season. A good team is already as sumed, but whether it will be located in Wilmington or Reading is to be decided. It is hoped that the team will be located here. PATERSON MAKES PROTEST.
