Mary E. Huff was the victim of a complete surprise last Saturday. It being her birthday anniversary the children and grandchildren gathered at her home to make the day one to be well remembered. Mr. and Mrs.

J. W. Nethers and children visited Millard Nethers and family near Frazeysburg Saturday. Mr. and Mrs.

Alex McDonald of Roscoe passed through the village Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. George Noland, Mr. and Mrs.

G. F. McConnell attended the grove meeting near Nickle Valley Sunday Mrs. Chalmer McBride and little daughter Iva, visited at Thomas Jones Sunday. John McFarland is visiting his aged ither, Mrs.

Tabitha McFarland and calling on many friends here. Mr. and Mrs. Will Wright who have been making their home with their aunt, Mrs. Jennie Cone, are moving to Willow Brook this week.

W. A. Clark is carpentering for M. C. Wright in Cooperdale.

The ladies of the W. F. M. S. held their monthly meeting at the home of Mrs.

P. S. Maston, Tuesday evening. Refreshments consisted of ice cream and its accessories. Proceeds amounted to about $8.00.

Some peaches and melons are being shipped from the station here. However the growers do not have to me in early to avoid the rush of iding. Carl Ricketts, of Columbus, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Humrickhouse at their home a few miles south of the city.

Over Their Picnic Arrangements. (Special Correspondence.) New Guilford, Sept. 3--Considerable dissatisfaction is manifested by the farmers and others in this and nearby communities at the decision of the committee in charge of the farmers picnic to charge vehicles an adimission fee to the picnic grounds. Quite a swarm of seventeen year locusts made their appearance in this locality last week. The foundation of the new hall is completed and the framework of the first story is up and sheeted.

Our drought continues in spite of the daily promises of good rains, and rains on all sides of us. Scarcely any plowing has been done yet for fall seeding on account of the extreme lack of moisture in the ground. Irvine Veatch returned to his work in the B. O. railroad yards at Zanesville, last Wednesday.

Mrs. Clara Veatch is visiting with Mr. H. H. Veatch and family.

A snap on a quarter strap broke while Mrs. Corda Specfcman was driving down a steep hill near Mr. Endsley's, causing the horse she was driving to run away. Mrs. Speckman was thrown from the buggy and severely injured about the head and shoulders.

The buggy was demolished. CHESTNUT RIDGE. (Special Correspondence.) Chestnut Ridge, Sept. 3--Miss Mma Finlay leaves this week for Columbus where she will spend a few days and from there she will go to Toledo to attend school the coming year. Misses Virginia McConnell and Delia Leech of near Keene visited Misses Olie and Bessie Reed- Anumber from here attended the sale at Mrs.

Hamilton's. W. L. Craig has secured a position with the rairoad company as fireman. Mr.

and Mrs Amos Fry and Jesse spent Sunday with the former's mother near Beck's Mills. The E. of Keene will hold a social at the home of Marshall Endsley, Thursday evening Sept. 10. Miss Nellie Fry visited Miss Stella Aultman of Clarke.

Miss Mary E. Tilton is ill with Communion services Sunday at 10:30 a. m. Preparatory services Friday at 2-30. Miss Laura Smith delightfully entertained a number of young people Wednesday evening at her beautiful home just south of Adams Mills In honor of her neice Miss Bessie Guild of Cleveland.

The evening was spent in games and music and an elegant luncheon was served. The guests were: Miss Guild, Misses Laura and Jesse Slaughter, Adelia and Harriet Smith, Flo Tilton, Era Kreider, Emma Krebe and Ada Caldwell, and Eura Slaughter, John Tilton, Arthur Gray, Prescott Gray, Jno. Mills, Herbert Stockdale, George Wolford, Carl Watts, Thomas Dunmead, Arthur Caldwell, Ed. Mills, and Mr. Golfey of Cleveland.
