6 Akron Beacon Journal Wednesday, November 30, 1983 TELEVISION Departing Roker didn start out to be weatherman morale around the station as well," said Dick Lobo, general manager of WKYC. "He learned his craft well before he Mark Dawidziak even got here. "The way he is every night on the broadcast is the way he really is in real life. Whoever we bring in will have some really big shoes to fill. And I've assured Al that if he ever gets homesick for Cleveland, he has a place to come back to." "It's been al nouncement will not be made until contract negotiations are finalized.

The general manager estimates that the new weatherman will start in three or four weeks. "We aren't going to out-Goddard Dick Goddard (WJKW-Ch. 8 weatherman) because he's been here for so many years," Lobo said. "But Al came closest to competing. He was very thorough and it's much to my regret that he's leaving." AS FOR ROKER, he's not looking past his new assignment in New York.

"I don't set goals," he said. "I've been very happy here, and that's what made this one a difficult decision. Now, I'm just looking at getting through one day at a time. "I might still think about producing or directing, but this is good work and a fun job. I might even try comedy writing for television some day.

But that would be way down the road. "I'm just going to keep riding this train until it runs out of steam." After five years forecasting Cleveland's weather, Al Roker is returning to the less snowy metropolis of New York. The Big Apple is home for Roker, and it's about the only place that could lure the broadcaster away from WKYC-Ch. 3 and Cleveland. "That's where my family is, and New York has been a goal of mine for a long time," the weatherman said.

"The one and only reason I'm leaving Cleveland is New York. "I've enjoyed Cleveland. It's been great to me. I've turned down a couple of offers from other markets, but New York was the big consideration in this move." ROKER, WHO WILL make his last Cleveland weather forecast Friday night, moves on to WNBC-Ch. 4, the network's owned-and-operated station based in Rockefeller Center.

His duties will include feature reports and occasional forecasts substituting for Dr. Frank Field, "the dean of television weathermen." Ironically, Roker never even intended on having a career on television. His original goal was to be a producer or director. "That what I really wanted to do when I was majoring in communications at Oswego State University (in upstate New York)," he said. "I took a couple of meteorology courses to fulfill some science requirements.

Then one of my teachers told me about an opening at a local station." THE OPENING WAS for a weekend weather reporter at WHEN (now WTVH) in Syracuse. Roker got the job as a sophomore, continuing to gain valuable experience at the small station during his college years. He later moved on to WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C., again as a weather forecaster. He arrived at Ch. 3 in December 1978, replacing Bob Zappe on the 6 p.m.

newscast and Mona Scott at 11. "Al gave our on-air product a tremendous spirit, but he was great for Al Roker "I guess it would be an understatement to say I'm happy about the move," Roker said. "I never thought about working for Ch. 4, because the hot network newscast when I was growing up was ABC's Eyewitness News with Roger Grimsby (anchorman) and Tex An-toinne (weatherman). "Now, NBC seems to be the local New York news on the move.

So, this is a chance to get in the market and not have pressures of being the No. 1 weatherman. "I can do weather-related features, science and feature stories. They're giving me a certain amount of freedom." most five years to the day since I came to Cleveland," Roker commented. "So, it worked out pretty well to be 29 and have been working in television for about 10 years, and now going on to New York." A replacement for Roker has been chosen, but, according to Lobo, an an- I TONIGHT Nashville Network is carried on Warner Akron cable position 7-P2, and on 32 for Warner Springfield and Warner Wadsworlh.
