C4 Akron Beacon Journal Monday, April 9, 1 984 TELEVISION Win Man's son hopes to make Oscar Night a gee-whiz Mark Dawidziak graduates) are going to present it to him. And the clips alone are going to be worth the price of admission." Another special moment should be when director Frank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It's A Wonderful Life) steps out to announce the Best Picture selection. This year's marks the 50th anniversary of the Oscar ceremony that saw Capra's It Happened One Night sweep all five major awards (a feat only duplicated by One Flew Over the Cu-koo's Nest). After last year's disastrous attempt to use four hosts, Haley is glad that the emceeing duties again will fall to one person Johnny Carson.

"He's the best since Bob Hope," the producer said. "It's a very difficult thing to host the Academy Awards. Only a handful of people have pulled it off. I've used both multiple-hosts and the single host. There's no question that one works better." Does Haley have any predictions? "I'm the worst handicapper in the world," he said.

"I've never won an mat show. There are several things you have to do. If you opened with the Best Picture award, you'd be run out of Hollywood. Then you have to spread out the five songs. But, to me, it's not a thankless job; it's a great deal of fun." Haley thinks the highlight of the 56th Annual Academy Awards Presentation (which airs at 9 on WEWS-Ch.

5, WAKR-Ch. 23 and WYTV-Ch. 33) will be the Flashdance number, performed by Irene Cara and 45 dancers from New York's National Dance Company will knock your eyeballs and the special Oscar that will be presented to 92-year-old filmmaker Hal Roach. For those unfamiliar with Roach's name, the veteran producerdirector's legendary studio was responsible for most of the shorts and features starring such comic greats as Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang and Charlie Chase. Mack Sen-nett once called him "my only rival." "I can't tell you how thrilled I am that the honorary award is going to Hal Roach," Haley said.

"Jackie Cooper and Spanky McFarland (both Our Gang It's the same old problem every year. How do you improve an annual telecast that strives to be glamorous, exciting and suspenseful, yet ends up roundly criticized for being dull, interminable and tinselly? The Oscar presentations, which were started in the late '20s as a publicity stunt, remain the most-watched, most-hyped and most-disappointing of the televised awards shows. They are not the classiest. That distinction belongs to Broadway's Tony Awards. Nor can they be called the best-produced.

That honor must be accorded the American Film Institute's tasteful and intelligently packaged Life Achievement Award ceremonies. So just what does one do with these wearisome Academy Awards marathons? Producer Jack Haley Jr. has some definite ideas, and tonight all America will see if he can deliver. "First off, I'm trying to hold down the chit-chat between the presenters to a minimum by cutting out all those lame Oscar pool in my life. It's no secret that Shirley MacLaine Terms of Endearment) is an odds-on favorite for Best Actress.

So, I've got two good friends of hers presenting the award Jack Lem-mon and Liza Minnelli. "It's a calculated risk. She has a lot of friends in this town, and, if she wins, it's going to be an emotional moment." Haley says he likes to take some chances with the Oscar telecast. "I always look for that little added danger," he said. "Like this year there's going to be a special effects award for Return of The Jedi and Cheech and Chong will be presenting it.

I'll probably be cowering in a corner. When tonight's Oscars become history, Haley will continue working on Believe it or Not! and a new theater film called That's Dancing! "It will be in the tradition of That's Entertainment!" he said, "but it will be all dancing from all different studios. As for Believe it or I'm finally getting adjusted to being in 50th place every week and still being on the air." little jokes," said the son of The Wizard of Oz's beloved Tin Man. "If they say anything, it will be substantial. "We've also eliminated any major musical numbers except for the five nominated songs.

Then you just pray that the acceptors get on and off in a normal amount of time and don't ramble." This is Haley's fourth Oscar telecast, but it has been five years since his last fling with the Academy Awards. "It's not intimidating for me, but it is a challenge," said the ABC's Ripley's Believe it Or Not! and That's Entertainment! theater film producer. "It's a for Sports Time has Indians, no area link The new Sports Time Cable Network has purchased the rights to broadcast 25 Cleveland Indians home games, but no cable system in the Akron or Cleveland area has added the cable service. Carried on more than 100 cable systems, Sports Time has purchased the rights to broadcast 25 Indians games this season and 30 for the 1985 season. A co-venture of the Anheuser-Bush Mutli-media and cable giant Telecommunications, Sports Time is packaged for the Midwest.

Headquartered in St. Louis, Sports Time, which' started operations on April 3, offers a schedule that includes baseball games featuring the Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals and the Indians. Other Sports Time broadcasts include MISL soccer, boxing, track and field, high school and college basketball, tennis, bowling and horse racing. "Apparently, our schedule still isn't attractive enough for cable systems in Northeast Ohio," said Sports Time manager of communications Jerry Lovelace.

"Many of them expressed interest in Big 10 events, which I can understand. We're a regional service, but we're aiming for more of a mid-America region by expanding what we carry."
