tt Hilton Hotels Corp. is trying to gobble up the one hotel property standing in the way of its dominance of a prime stretch of the Las Vegas Strip. Hotel operator Michael Gaughan said he expects talks to resume within the next two weeks with Hilton on its efforts to buy his Barbary Coast hotel-casino. Buying the small 200-room hotel-casino would give Hilton all of a three-quarter mile length along the Las Vegas Strip. Hilton last week said it was buying Bally Entertainment Corp.

for about $2 billion, giving it the Sally's Las egas resort and a piece of adjacent property where plans arc to build the Pans hotel-casino. The Barbary Coast, which sits on a tiny 1 site next to the Flamingo Hilton and across from Bally's, was build 1 8 years ago by Gaughan, despite opposition from the gaming giants surrounding him. "It's been a part of my life for a long time," Gaughan said. Gaughan is majority stockholder of Coast Resorts, which was formed by the merger of the Barbary Coast and Gold Coast hotel-casinos Coast Resorts is currently building a third casino the Orleans off the Las Vegas Strip. Hilton officials declined to comment on talks ith Coast.

5 states create new game It's called The Big Game, and lotteries in five states hope it ill boost sales in a big way beginning Aug. 31. At a news conference in Chicago Tuesday, lottery directors from the five states announced the creation of a new multistate game ith jackpots that could exceed $50 million. Lottery retailers in Maryland, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan and Virginia will begin selling the I tickets Aug. 31.

The first weekly drawing will be Sept. 6 in Illinois. The Big Game resembles Powerball, played in 20 states and Washington, and the lottery directors hope it will compete directly with the older multistate game. "Combining the populations of our five states 38 million people has allowed us to create a game that will generate jackpots much bigger than any of us could generate indiv idually said Dcsiree Rogers, director of the Illinois Lottery. Lottery jackpots in the I million range no longer lure players the way they have in the past, officials said.

As a result, lotteries say they must look toward higher prizes to keep sales from declining or stagnating. Newspaper strike delays UA Uvui t'f an tr-' a ti. H-'t ii a m.mJ rsl4ixcl t.ii.i!'' i. 1 h- ci a' if I'l a.lt i tf i Ht( t' .1 if i --J I rt naif I p. lif -if S.is'lh an a t'tJ-' il-" i.
