Akron Beacon Journal D5 State VFW commander wants Wednesday, September 19, 1984 20 ts new pos by his brother, Lauren, while Rohr runs his own masonry company. Shortly after marrying Donna, his wife of 33 years, Rohr went to Korea, where he was an automatic rifleman in the 24th Infantry Division. He earned four Bronze Stars and the Korean Service Medal. Rohr and his wife, who was president of the VFW women's auxiliary in 1979-80, now have four grown children. He is a charter member of Canal Fulton VFW Post 9795, which was established in 1964.

Rohr was the post's first junior vice commander and later became adjutant and commander. The post, an old warehouse once valued at $5,000, is now worth $120,000 and has 350 members. Korean veterans did at those who served in Vietnam. "At first, the Vietnam veterans wanted no more of the military," he said. "Now, 15 years out of service, they're changing their minds.

It's just the passing of the baton." About half of the VFW state commanders are Vietnam veterans, representing more than a fourth of the organization's 2 million members. "It's not the price you pay to be a member, but the price you pay to be eligible," Rohr said. To join, a member must have earned a combat ribbon. Rohr, a graduate of the former Canal Fulton High School, was born on the family farm in Stark County. The farm is now operated image stays with us.

I'd like to stress that we are as much a volunteer organization as any other, be it fraternal or patriotic." Rohr contends VFW membership is improving because of the Reagan administration's strong military posture and because the wounds between veterans of various wars are healing. "The new feeling of patriotism did more for our membership than anything else," he said. "The Vietnam situation was the lull when people were anti-government, anti-anything. We're over that period now." Rohr said World War II veterans looked back at World War I veterans just as World War II and national convention last month and will attend the Big 10 VFW conference in Indiana later this year. One of his primary goals is to establish 20 new Ohio posts by next July.

In the less than three months since he took office, eight posts have been established. "We also want to upgrade the VFW's programs, especially our community service work," said Rohr. He is "especially interested" in youth programs, such as the Americanism speech contest and the Voice of Democracy essay contest. Problem-solving also demands his constant attention, he said. "I'm trying to create good will among the membership and mediate problems in the local posts," he said.

"With 110,000 members, we have a lot of personalities." One problem nagging the VFW and other veterans' organizations is their image as places "where old men go and drink beer," he said, adding: "I'd like to see the image of our canteens improved. They should be family places where, every member of the family can come and eat and socialize. "We don't drink any more than any other organization, but that By Glenn Proctor Beacon Journal staff writer Despite what his name might imply, Glen A. Rohr of Canal Fulton is pleasant and unassuming. He isn't hung up on titles, but he's proud of his role as leader of the Department of Ohio, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is persistent in achieving his goals and expects his orders to be carried out. But, as one VFW publication said, "He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet" and he contradicts former baseball manager Leo Durocher's philosophy that nice guys finish last. Since he became commander of Ohio's 110,600 VFW members on July 1, Rohr's 1984 Cadillac Sedan De Ville has traveled about 8,000 miles, mostly on weekends. He expects that before his yearlong term is over, he'll log about 40,000 miles in the VFW-pur-chased vehicle. Each state commander receives a car and an allowance, now at $17,000.

At the end of their terms, the commanders may buy the cars or return them. In addition to his weekly trips to department headquarters in Columbus and visits to many of the 462 posts throughout the state, Rohr attended the VFW Glen Rohr State VFW commander Hurry in Now for Great Values on Our Exclusive Electronics I OBITUARIES Richard Basehart, 70, stage, screen actor One-Piece Personal Telephone Stock Up on Video Tape SUPERTAPE by Radio Shack ET-120 by Radio Shack I I 25 if If i 2o Off rJ Your Choice Los Angeles Times LOS ANGELES Richard Basehart, whose resonant voice and distinguished bearing took him through a long and successful stage, film and television acting career, has died after a series of strokes, his agent said Tuesday.
