Tbe Speed of (he Administration ia Ttaaiaa; Official 4 air. New York Star, February 27th. Our orbicular contemporary, the Sun, does not always retain its characteristic luminosity, it vesterdav admitted to its flaming columns a writer who was both ignorant and dull. His dullness is pervious to our correction, but we do think we can produce an eSect upon his ignorance. He says there are P25.0OO holders of civil ofSce under the Feder.d government, and the administration has displaced only a beggarly 8 or 10 per cent of them.

Ten per cent would be 12.500. But up to the lt of January the administration has ap. pointed lii.tnio fourth-class post masters. lsides foreign ministers, consuls, treasury officials, marshals, district attorneys, ostniasters of other grades, emplovrs of the interior department, all in considerable number. The misinformed com sj ndi nt complains of the slowness with which the work of removal has otie on.

Let us see. The a.lmiiiistraioE was inaugurated th-4th of March last. We will' allow i 30 days to prejare for work. From. the 3d of April to the 1st of January there were 2''2 working days, during wnich fourth-class postmaster were removed and others appointed in their places.

This is at the rate of t'7 a day. and giving 10 hours to the day, at the rate of about seven an hour or a removal and an appointment for every nine minute of time. The Sun whirls through space at su a breakneck seed that the progress we have described seems to it like standing still. But to our Lir, it l-ing a tixd sar sutndiEg firm, immovable atid rV-ad-fut at the very zenith the letij-cratic firmameL't. the seems to be going on at an excellent and inspiring gait.

Miss Cleveland lunch party of hatur-daynumWred Tjk) ia all, and it was, if anything, more successful than the party of last week. The same general arrangements were made as before, and the decorations that the house wore for the reception of last night were retained. The Marine Band played in the private dining room and the ladies passed to the table in the state dining room soon after 2 o'clock. The long table, with its broadened ends. was decorated with a long oval cushion of choice flowers, and several tall tperg nee of flowers and wreaths of blobsoin lay on the cloth around the epergnes.

There were many candelabra of shaded wax lights that helped to illuminate the room after the windows were darkened and the chandeliers lighted. The corage bouuet were unusually handsome, larje clusters of roses, lilies, acacia LIvrsviiih, or orchids being laid at each plute. The boquets were tied With the broad souvenir ribbons so often described. Twelve courses were furvud, but no wines were tiered, Mpollimiris water, alone supple menting the customary iced water. Miss Cleveland sat at the west ud of the table, with Mrs.

Maxey at her and Mrs. Voorhees at her left. The other guests the wives of about twenty Sena tors and of a like numbers of representatives, including the of Senator Gray and Representative Lore, of this Slate. JUrov ut atter Itc-kuu4 XkMmrmL, Kcsi-Ksiaioji Bkiog, N. Feb.

28. A man 35 or 40 years old came here from Buffalo this afternoon. He took a carriage to the rapids, and thence to the falls, where he went on the ice-bound base of the American Fall. He fell or jumped over and was lost. It is said Le was from New York.

The man was of medium sandy whiskers and wore a silk hat and a frock overcoat. He looked like a German. iQTtvr MUt Sltih m. now Th sniihU is to let go, lik the man who caught the hear. WlkduAAllI ti, 1,1.
