In addition to "Showgirls," "Leaving Las Vegas" which has no connection with the Sheryl Crow song is another movie about Glitter Gulch. The contemporary love story stars Nicholas Cage, who starred in the comedy "Honeymoon in Vegas." "Leaving Las Vegas," which had a budget of under $10 million, is set for limited release Oct. 13. Hirsch says although the movie was to represent Las Vegas, it was actually shot in Laughlin in 1 994. Like "Showgirls," "Casino" is another big-budget and highly anticipated Las Vegas movie.

"Casino," which stars De Niro, Stone, Pesci and is directed by Scorsese, has a tentative Nov. 10 release date. The movie, which had a budget of $55 million, filmed last fall and winter. The fictional drama, about the rise and the fall of a 1 970s Las Vegas gaming mogul, filmed at more than 125 locations, including the Riviera Hotel, Landmark Hotel, Stardust and Jockey Club. 'Casino' hired more Nevadans than any other film that has shot in the state," Hirsch says.

"That includes everything from actors, extras, guild members and union workers. It was very good for Las Vegas and the state." But with all these Las Vegas movies coming out, is the movie-going public poised for a Sin City overdose? "Las Vegas is hot right now," Cortez says. "But I don't necessarily think there's going to be an oversaturation of Las Vegas in the movies. I suspect that these movies will just add to the ambience of Las Vegas and hopefully help increase our visitors." Bowling, who's been a location manager for 20 years, concurs. "I suppose it's possible that too many movies could be made about Las Vegas," Bowling says.

"Basically, all these movies fuel the fire of interest in Las Vegas. I had very good experience there and I would go back in a moment with another picture. At the same time, the state of Nevada has a lot more than Las Vegas. Las Vegas may have more to offer than gambling, but Hollywood is hoping to hit the box-office jackpot with these new movies. Holabird says its popularity as a movie location can be traced to some recent successful Las Vegas movies, including "Indecent Proposal," "Honeymoon in Vegas" and "Honey, I Blew Up The Kid." "Anything that makes money is going to be replicated," Holabird explains.

"The trend will continue. It's like the old axiom for actors, 'You're only as good as your last It also applies for locations. If 'Casino' or 'Showgirls' are bombs, the trend will reverse and movie people will stay away from Vegas." "Movies are quick to jump on what's hot at the time and do features about it." Bowling, whose other location managing credits include "Beverly Hills Cop" and "The Fisher King," agrees.

"Las Vegas has boomed," says Bowling, during a recent phone conversation from his Los Angeles home. "It's an extremely dynamic city. There's a lot of energy and excitement. It's very natural that movies are being drawn to such a place. It's very natural for good stories to come from an exciting environment." One of the Vegas stories is the controversial "Showgirls," an explicit account of Las Vegas strippers.

"Showgirls" set for release Sept. 22 is the first studio film since 1 990's "Henry June" to carry the adults-only NC-1 7 rating. "Showgirls" reunites director Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas from "Basic Instinct" fame. Cortez says that despite the film's racy topic and NC-l 7 rating, he doesn't expect any negative impact on the image of Las Vegas. "It's not a movie about Vegas per se, rather than it's a movie with Las Vegas as a backdrop," Cortez points out.

"I don't know that you can control that. You just have to realize that it is a movie and it is imitating life." Bob Hirsch, director of the Nevada Motion Picture Division, concurs. "I don't expect any bad publicity from it," Hirsch says. "The studio (MGM) went for NC-1 7, expected it and would' ve been disappointed if they didn't get it." Robin Holabird, deputy director of the state's film commission, says "Showgirls" could actually have a positive impact on Las Vegas. "I don't think it's going to hurt (Las Vegas') tourism," Holabird says.

"It will probably make a lot of people want to come to Las Vegas. They may not find exactly what they see in the movie though. "There's something called the 'Crocodile Dundee' effect in which you show a man fighting alligators in Australia, and then Australian tourism increases by 50 percent the next year," she adds. "The same thing happened with the movie It started the whole business of river rafting." "Showgirls," which shot last fall in Las Vegas, filmed at the Strip and the Stardust and Riviera casinos. However, because no big Las Vegas stages were available at the time, the "Showgirls" filmmakers ended up using the Lake Tahoe Horizon's Grande Lake Theater for its elaborate stage scenes.

In addition, "Showgirls" which had a CCR From page 1 platinums, three gold albums, six platinum singles and seven gold singles. The 1 972 split came when Fogerty broke away from the band in a contract dispute with a record label. Clifford and Cook decline to discuss the breakup. They haven't spoken to Fogerty in years, and they didn't invite them to join the new band. "As the rhythm section, we're the motor or the engine and we drive it," Cook said.

"When we play, it's unmistakably Creedence." But can Revisited recreate the original group's sound? It's possible, Clifford said, because of new vocalist and guitar player John Tristao. "The Rolling Stone Album Guide," published by Random House in 1 992, says Clifford, Cook and Fogarty's brother, Tom, a guitarist who died of natural causes in 1 990, were straightforwardly effective. "But it was basically John's songs, guitar and singing that made the band," the guide says. "Like Joe Cocker's, (John) Fogarty's voice was an amazing creation a hoarse soulful thing." The guide also says that although Fogarty's raw guitar and vocals dominated America's best straight rock outfit of the early '70s, "the ramshackle grace of CCR's rhythm section provided crucial, spontaneous verve." Clifford and Cook decided last winter to launch Revisited, and by March they had their band was in place. JUNIOR BOWLERS 5 to 18 year olds Starts Sept.
