I Indians' first two offers were unacceptable. "Their first offer was for four years and $8.25 million," Swindell said. "Then they came back with another offer. I don't think it was sufficient either, but that's what negotiating is for." Hart said: "My feeling on Greg is that like a lot of players who are arbitration-eligible, he wants to see what the market is going to do. So there is little hope for an early signing." Swindell denies publicly that he wants to leave the Indians.

Asked if he were willing to return, he said: "Sure. Cleveland has always been good to me. I've said all along, I want to be there." Candiotti said he wouldn't contact the Indians, but if they made the first move, he would be receptive. "It would show me something if they called," he said. NOTEBOOK Brian Graham, who managed at Class A Klnston this year, is expected to be named manager at Cart-ton-Akron.

Luis Isaac, the Tribe's bullpen coach In 1991, has accepted a coaching position at Colorado Springs, where Charlie Manuel will return as manager. It isn't official yet, but Mark Wiley likely will become a major-league scout for the Tribe. He was Cleveland's pitching coach this year. seeking 4-year contract by Sheldon Ockeb Beacon Journal staff writer The most significant public relations move since sewing numbers on uniforms? For sure. A major boost to the team's talent pool? That, too.

Only a pipe dream? Probably. But is Tom CandiottJ's return to Cleveland out of the question? Maybe not. Candiotti, entering free agency, doesn't expect the Indians to bid for his services. But if they did? "I wouldn't say no," Candiotti said by phone from his home in California. "But I think it's highly unlikely, because I don't think they would come up with the money." Indians general manager John Hart termed a potential Candiotti offer as "premature speculation." "At this time, we are not inclined to go after Candiotti," Hart said.

But would he definitely rule it out? Tom Candiotti: Boston Interested The Tribe chose, instead, to try and keep Greg Swindell, who can be a free agent in October. Negotiations so far have not been productive. That's where the Candiotti scenario comes in. If Swindell refuses to sign a multi-year deal, the Indians might approach Candiotti with an offer. At least one source close to Swindell says, "There's no way Greg will stay in Cleveland." Swindell revealed on a WKNR radio talk show this week that the Ric Sayre: tough as rocks "I was a little bit burned out after Pittsburgh," Sayre said.

"This summer I backed off and sort of took it easy." He also got married for the first time (not to the woman from Medina). "And when I was ready I went looking for a race," Sayre said. The race is Columbus. Sayre hopes to run about 2:15 Sunday, which should place him toward the front but not in the winner's circle. "I'm just looking for a real solid effort," he said.

Sayre knows that his days of winning major marathons are behind him. But he has set his sights on another goal. In a year and half, he'll be 40. "I'm looking forward to it," Sayre said. "Not only will I be competing directly against Frank Shorter, Bill Rodgers and those 300 Lb.

Olympic Weight $129 Just Reg. $199 i cy the same time, if Candiotti were to be available at some point, I would talk to Rocky Lucia (CandiottJ's agent)." Candiotti hasn't been officially approached with offers from any team yet. Baseball law dictates that contract offers cannot be made until next week. However, it is expected that Candiotti will command a salary of about $4 million for each of the next four seasons. Toronto, his most recent employer, will not guarantee a contract for more than three years.

But Boston is willing to give 4-year deals and has expressed an interest in Candiotti. "I would be a good complement to Roger Clemens," Candiotti said. "Plus Boston would be taking away something from Toronto. It would be a double wham-my." Does he want to play for the Red Sox? "I don't know yet about Boston," Candiotti said. "Toronto is going to have a good hitting team.

But catching is a weak link. And, how are they going to go out and get a front-line catcher?" Cleveland traded Candiotti to the Blue Jays in June rather than face dealing with his free-agent demands. different environment would help my running," he said. It did. In the mid-1980s, Sayre won marathons in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Ottawa, placed second at Pittsburgh, third, at Stamford, fourth at Columbus and did well in a host of others.

Runner's World magazine ran a major feature on him. Sayre's long hair, liberal politics and 20-year commitment to a vegetarian diet made him a good story sort of the flower child of the running community. But Sayre was also tough as a rock. Indeed, while most elite marathoners raced the distance once or twice a year, Sayre could run six or seven marathons and all within a few minutes of his best time of 2 hours, 12 minutes. For five years, Sayre made a comfortable living as a marathoner.

Work meant stepping out his back door and running up a mountain path. "That was a great time," he said. "I sort of relish those days." But by 1988 a minor injury had evolved into a torn tendon in his hip. For three years, Sayre didn't compete. Instead, he quit running completely, then slowly worked his way back into shape.

Also at this time, the former shoe clerk became part owner of a sporting goods store in Oregon. Today, Sayre is in the midst of a comeback. He won the Charlotte Observer Marathon in January in 2:16. In May, he placed eighth (2:22) at Pittsburgh in 80-degree heat. SEND $30.00 TO: SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS INC.

Include name, address, phone number and source of information. When Ric Sayre lived in Akron in the late 1970s, he had a girlfriend in Medina, but no car. So on Saturdays, the former Hoban High and Walsh College runner would lace up his shoes and run the 20 miles out Route 18 to pay her a visit. Then he would turn around and run those 20 miles back home. Today, Sayre, 38, could easily be cruising in a luxury car.

In 1985 he won an Audi 4000 for winning the San Francisco Marathon. In 1986, he was handed the keys to a Mercedes 190 after placing first in the Los Angeles Marathon. Yet Sayre owns a 1980 Honda Civic wagon. He cashed in both cars he won and bought a plot of land in his adopted hometown of Ashland, where he built a house. "To me, a car has always been something to just get you from one place to another," he said.

Getting from one place to another. That's something Sayre knows a lot about particularly places that are 26.2 miles apart. Simply put, Sayre is the all-time best marathoner from Ohio. And Sunday he'll run in his home state at the Columbus Marathon, site of the 1991 United States Men's National Marathon Championships. He's the 10th seed.

(In April, Sayre will return to Columbus for his third consecutive U.S. Men's Olympic Marathon Trials. It should be his fourth, but in 1980 Sayre decided not to run the Trials though he qualified because of the Olympic boycott.) "I really love running," Sayre said. "And to be a full-time runner was something I always dreamed about." That's why Sayre worked short hours at low-paying shoe stores in Akron. And that's why he decided to head west in 1981.

"I think if you go into the game figuring you're going to double Jerome Brown, then you've got problems with White, and (Seth) Joyner and Simmons. Bill Belichick Simmons, the right end, set a club mark with 4 sacks against Dallas, eclipsing White's record.

Brown had lxh sacks. White had one sack and four pressures. Reserve tackle Mike Golic, a wild card in the rush schemes, had two sacks and three pressures. Realizing how many weapons are at the disposal of Eagles defensive coordinator Bud Carson, ex-head coach of the Browns, is just part of the problem. Early recognition of where all those weapons will be deployed is the other part.

"Reggie plays most of the time at left end," Belichick said, "but he also plays on the center. They or Only $99 with purchase of a Bodytmlth Workout Center with Lat. He lines up sometimes on the right tackle, sometimes on the tight end. He basically plays in about three spots." So there will be another burden on Fike, the burden of quick and clear communication with the other linemen. "I feel comfortable with Fike," King said.

"Fike has been in the league a long time. I think he's almost like a coach. He probably knows every move that Reggie's going to make, and can make." Knowing White's moves is one thing. Stopping him is altogether different. Consider the comparison with Lawrence Taylor, whose greatness needs no elaboration.

Since 1985, White's first year with the Eagles, Taylor has had 92 sacks. White has had 102.
