i B4 Akron Beacon Journal Friday, September 7, 1984 TELEVISION Production group offers cause for networks9 concern Saturday night, and WCPN-FM (90.3) will turn on the juice at 10 with a Mel Torme benefit concert broadcast live from the Masonic Auditorium. "You always want more time," said Leonard Will, general manager of. Mark Dawidziak tures will further dilute a talent pool that once was the almost-exclusive domain of the three networks. And producers just might prefer an ironclad, profit-guaranteeing syndication deal to the networks' traditional 13-week tryout. Another problem area for the networks will be stations like WJKW.

What happens if New Program Group produces a blockbuster miniseries? Does Channel 8 bump the network schedule to make way for it? "It's a little premature to worry about that," Whitaker said. "But it would be the classic scenario. Sure, we'd drop prime-time programming if the alternative was attractive enough, but I don't think an affiliate would jeopardize its relationship with a network. "I think the network-affiliate relationship is going to change as these options develop. It still will be strong, but it won't be as complete." Torme broadcast Public radio returns to Cleveland p.m), and Storer is very close with Metromedia, which is the biggest independent distributor going." Syndication through ad hoc networks is hardly a new development.

Paramount went that route this summer in marketing The Jesse Owens Story. And the Mobile Showcase Network has done very well in setting up networks for such productions as Nicholas Nickleby and King Lear. "It's the size and resources of this group that makes it important," Whitaker said of the New Program Group. "It does seem to be a consortium of significant proportions." WJKW's general manager, however, also doesn't see this as the start of a fourth network. "You'd need the resources of millions, if not billions, of dollars for that," he said.

"This just sounds like an effort to have more programming to rely on." Still, with cable outfits like Home Box Office and Showtime stepping up their output of original programming, New Program Group and similar ven When you put it all together, they I have the capacity to reach 45 percent of i the American viewing public, with stations in 21 of the top 25 markets, They're claiming this isn't the start i of a fourth network, but I guarantee you i nervous heads were turning at ABC, i CBS and NBC when five of the country's i biggest groups of stations announced they would jointly produce original programming. These aren't five fly-by-night companies we're talking about. This consortium, which is being called the New Program Group, will pool the considerable resources of Metromedia the Gannett Broadcasting Group, the Hearst Broadcasting Stations, Storer Communications and Taft Broadcasting. Metromedia alone is a formidable broadcasting force. It operates seven television stations in such far-flung cities as New York, Los Angeles and Washington and has been successful in syndicating original episodes of such series as Too Close for Comfort.

The reasons given for this partner- WCPN, "but when I think the first electrician showed up in March and, six months later, we're ready to you bet I'm pleased." A operation, WCPN. will reach listeners in Cuyahoga? Lake, Geauga, Lorain and Medina counties, including some who can't ship are the rising costs of syndicated network shows and the diminishing amount of product. "This is the first I've been hearing about it, but it doesn't come as a surprise," said C. David Whitaker, general manager of WJKW-Ch. 8, a CBS affiliate owned by Storer.

"The costs for programs like Family Ties and Cheers have become just outrageous. And there's less and less product. As soon as a show becomes available, it gets gobbled up. "Our company has been getting more and more into original programming. We are an equity partner in Divorce Court (starting Monday at 4:30 Mel Torme get Kent public radio station WKSU-FM.

Besides All Things Considered and 4 Prairie Home Companion, WCPN has scheduled several news-information and contemporary jazz shows.
