'Round and 'round and 'round, tens of thousands of times, day after day.

Tustin resident Jeff Block knows what it feels like. He's the Guinness Book of Records' Ferris wheel riding champion. And on June 17, Block will begin a mission to outdo his own 37-day record ride set in 1978. As part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the first Ferris wheel, Block will eat, sleep and generally conduct his life (not counting shower and restroom breaks) aboard an antique Ferris wheel. He won't get off again for 38 days and more than 30,000 revolutions.

"I never thought I'd do it again," Block said. "The first time was boring. It was hot. I missed my water bed. And I'm not crazy although my mother and my girlfriend think I am." Block, now 36, was 21 when he set his record on the same 1929 wheel at the now-defunct Frontier Village amusement park in San Jose.

At the time, he was unemployed and answered a want ad for the unusual job of Ferris wheel marathoner. This time Block will ride under the sponsorship of the Orange County (Calif.) Fair. He will take a leave of absence from his job as a custodian. The fair will feed him and provide him 24-hour security during the stunt. OUR NEW LOCATION IS 1900 W.

To pass the time, Block said he will take along a portable TV set, a radio and a telephone as well as a few mystery novels and the daily newspaper.

Those amusements kept him going during his 1978 ride as he traveled 353.95 miles in 29,744 revolutions. Fair officials didn't know the Ferris wheel riding champ lived in Orange County until Block called to offer information for their celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Ferris wheel. The first was created by a mechanical engineer, George Washington Gale Ferris, his inventive juices stimulated by a prize offered for anyone who could come up with a new attraction to rival the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Ferris nvented the ridable "pleasure wheel" in 1892 and built the first one for the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. plus the spring down cushions.
