Steve Meister, Fritz Buehning and defending champion Marty Davis were seeded sixth through eighth, respectively. In addition to a well-known field of international stars, six recent NCAA singles champions also will vie for the $15,000 first prize Matt Mitchell (1978), Robert Van't Hof (1980), Mike Leach (1982) and Greg Holmes (1983). Incidentally, Scanlon (1977) and Mayotte (1981) also won NCAA titles. And Jeff Klaparda, who last week won the National Hard Court Amateur Championships in Cleveland, will compete as well.

IMG, a highly-regarded organizer of world-class tennis, has managed the U.S. Pro Tennis Championships and the U.S. Women's Indoor Tennis Championships.

The Wimbledon organizing committee, as well as those of the U.S., Australian and Canadian opens, are also major IMG clients. While top-notch organizing efforts on the part of Society and IMG are bound to help bring big tion has improved tremendously over 1983, IMG representative John Weil said. "When your defending champion is the No. 8 seed, you can imagine the strength of this year's field," he said. Tickets for the tournament are priced at $5 for Monday through Thursday morning sessions and at $7 for the evening matches.

For Friday's quarterfinals, tickets are $6 for the early sessions and $8 in the evening. You pay $8 in the morning and $10 in the evening for Saturday's semifinals. It costs $12 to watch Sunday's finals. AKRON District Tennis officials are winning their bout with complacency. More than 116 youngsters registered to compete in the ADTA tournament that starts Monday at Ellet's Hyre Park.

"We're up by 45 over last year when we had only 71 participants," said Mary Stark, vice president of the ADTA. "And for the first time this year, we're offering a category for girls 10 and under. Five players have signed up." Although competition was open to residents from all five counties Summit, Stark, Wayne and Portage most of the participants still hail from Summit County. Play at Hyre begins at 9 a.m. and will continue until 5 p.m.

Male and female competitors will play in one of five age categories 18 and under, 16 and under, 14 and under, 12 and under and 10 and under. Here are the top-seeded players in each other group: 0 self taught method works The theme "something old, something new" could certainly describe Cleveland's upcoming production of the Western Open Tennis Championships. The tournament, which attracts some of the world's top-ranked male players, is part of the Volvo Grand Prix series and features nearly $100,000 in prize money. It will begin its 97th running Monday. For the first time, Society National Bank is the tournament sponsor.

And tournament officials hope that affiliation could help rebuild Cleveland's status as a world-class tennis center. The town was the site of the Davis Cup finals in 1964, '69, '70 and '73. And International Management Group's involvement should be another plus for Cleveland-area Aucott's Club championships being what they are, they seldom attract attention beyond the club itself. A scratch player wins it all, and everyone else plays for second place. At Congress Lake Country Club in Hartville this week, however, there promises to be an interesting twist to the women's club championship.

Set for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, the event is expected to be a pitched battle between Ruth Aucott and Karen Oldham, two of the finest players in the Women's Akron District Golf Association. Oldham Friday won the rain-shortened WADGA 54-hole championship for the seventh time in 12 years; Aucott was third behind Oldham and Pauline Whita-cre after starting the final round deadlocked with Oldham for first. Aucott, a resident of Bath and a Congress Lake member for four years, beat Oldham for the club title in her first try, in 1981, lost it to Oldham in 1982, then took it back last year. Oldham recalls meeting Aucott upon her arrival in northeastern Ohio, and asking if she wouldn't like to join Congress Lake. "I Open BOYS' SINGLES 18-under I.

Clark Stadium on South Marginal Road in downtown Cleveland, the main draw will be the talent in the 32-man field. Just to give you an idea of how talent-filled it is, Roscoe Tanner, former Australian Open champion and Wimbledon finalist, is not among the eight seeded players. South African Johan Kriek, currently ranked eighth in the world after winning the West of England Championships in June, was top seeded. Eighteenth-ranked Bill Scanlon of Dallas was seeded second. Tim Mayotte, No.

"The second lesson came several years later, and had to do with chipping. Had I taken some lessons on how to putt, I probably could win at this game." Her inference that she has never won is far off the mark. She has been a club champion everywhere the Aucotts have been members.

The self-taught method has worked well for her, she says. "I'm a good mimic, and I learn by watching and reading. I see so many junior players who have come through youth programs and have that nice, strong, smooth swing. It seems as if its built in, that they don't have to even think about it. "I still feel like a new player.

If I had started younger, I'd probably be a steadier player." She started golf, she said, "more or less as something to do while everyone else in my family was busy." Her husband, George, currently an executive at Firestone, had made a career move and the Au- Brad Agee of Conroe, Texas, 4 and 2, in the final match at the Wayzata Country Club in Minnesota. Martin won the first five holes plus the seventh and eighth for a 7-hole advantage. He was 4-under-par before sustaining a series of missed shots as Agee won the ninth, 12th, 13th and 15th holes. Martin followed Johnny Miller (1964), Bob Byman (1972) and Willie Wood (1977) as a U.S. Junior champion who also won the qualifying medal.

Martin did not trail in any of his six matches. Western Amateur Rocco Mediate, of Florida Southern University, eliminated Qklahoma State All-America Scott Ver-plank 1-up in 19 holes to qualify for final match play showdown at Point O' Woods Golf Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. Mediate will face Fred Wadsworth of Columbus, in one match, and John Inman, the current NCAA champion from Greensboro, N.C. will meet Canadian Amateur champion Danny Mijovic in the other match. Summit County Amateur Carl Zoeller shot a course-record 63 to take a 2-stroke lead in the first round of the Summit County Amateur at Akron's Good Park Golf Course.

Rick Bryson was two shots back with a 65, and Bob Goulish and Jim Gannon tied for third with a 69 going into today's final round. As reported on PM Magazine 5f "TIIE GD OLE DAYS" AUGUST 1 thru 21 Roberts not at ease in lead cotts had gone to Illinois in the mid-1970s. "My son was in school, we were building a house, and the company my husband worked for had a membership at a country club," Aucott said. "One day, I picked up an old set of golf clubs and started to play." It has helped, of course, to be athletically inclined. Her skills were first honed in that diverse youth program that is a highlight of growing up in the Philadelphia area.

By the late 1950s and early 1960s, All-America field hockey teams were not complete if they did not include the name Ruth Heller. In fact, while at Ursinus College she became the first field hockey player awarded All-America status while still in college. In those days, the sport was played at the -club level. Today, she is a national official for field hockey and lacrosse, largely at the collegiate level. She travels the country officiating games, and has worked as many as six games a week during the two seasons.

She stopped playing those two sports regularly about 10 years ago; she has been officiating them for more than 30 years. Robert Vogley of Canton will defend his Ohio Public Links championship when the tournament gets underway at Pebble Creek and Apple Valley near Mansfield Tuesday. It runs through Friday. Ohio qualifiers for the U.S. Amateur will be held at Trumbull Country Club near Warren and at Ohio State's golf course In Columbus Aug. 13.

At Trumbull, 68 players will compete for five spots in the 84th Amateur at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Aug. 28-Sept. 2. At Ohio State, 75 will go after five berths. The 1983 Amateur champion, Jay Slgel of Berwyn, won a berth in the World Series of Golf and will compete at Firestone Country Club Aug.

MAIN ST. Golf John Seaburn brought a good player into the club, and some of this upon myself," she said good-naturedly. Aucott recently won the WADCO Senior tournament, shooting a 1-over-par 74 at her home course. "I had become eligible for the seniors the week before the tournament," she said. "I figured that if I was going to announce to the world that I'm a senior, I better do well." It's been just about 10 years now since Aucott first picked up a golf club.

In the ensuing years, she says, she has read everything she can get her hands on regarding golf, and has watched televised events with the idea of picking up more helpful hints. There have been just two lessons. GOLF Mark Lye, Curtis Strange and Tim Simpson. Lye and Simpson each had a 70 and Strange shot 71. In other tournaments: Irish Open Bernhard Langer of West Germany moved a stroke ahead of the field after three rounds of the Irish Open Golf Championship in Dublin, Ireland.

Langer. who has won more than $90,000 in three weeks, shot a third-round 67, and his 15-under-par 201 leaves him one stroke ahead of England's David Russell, who scored a 67. The overnight leader, Magnus Persson of Sweden, had a disastrous third round with a 4-over-par 76. Behind Langer and Russell is Jose Rivero of Spain at 203, after his third-round 68. Australian Graham Marsh moved up to fourth with a 67, three shots off the lead and tied with Britain's Mark James, who had a 70.

Defending champion Severiano Ballesteros of Spain remained five strokes off the lead after a 68. Wait Virginia LPGA Claaalc Alice Miller rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to beat the rains and take a 1-stroke lead in this $150,000 tournament in Wheeling. Miller, the defending champion, sandwiched 16 pars between birdies at the first and last holes to shoot a 2-under-par 70 for a 2-day total of 7-under 137. Miller leads Vicki Singleton by a stroke and fast-charging Beverly Klass by two shots entering today's final round on the course. Singleton, from Oberlin, who led the first round with a tournament-record 6-under-par 66, finished Saturday's second round at even par 72.

After nine pars in a row, Singleton bogeyed the 10th and 11th to fall two shots back before making it up with birdies at 12 and 17. U.S. Junior Championship Find-lay's Doug Martin left no doubt from the beginning of Saturday's final round that the national junior golf title was his. Martin, 17, became only the fourth player to win the qualifying medal and the U.S. Junior Golf Championship in 37 years.

He defeated Fashioned Night SPEEDY MUFFLER SAVINGS FOR EVERYBODY. Associated Press Loren Roberts engineered a great escape act from constant trouble then capped a hard-earned round of 70 with a birdie on the 18th hole that left him with a 1-shot lead Saturday in the third round of the $500,000 Danny Thomas-Memphis Classic. "This is a trip in unchartered waters for me," said Roberts, 29, who never before has finished higher than 10th in a PGA Tour event and twice has lost due to lack of performance then regained his Tour playing rights. "I've never been in the lead at this stage of a golf tournament before," said Roberts, who has led or shared the lead all the way in this one. "I don't know what to expect.

I'm not going to kid myself. I know I'll be nervous tomorrow." Just moments after the national television cameras had ended their coverage for the day, Roberts wedged to four feet and made the birdie putt on the 18th that put him at 9-under-par 207 and a shot ahead of Bob Eastwood. The veteran Eastwood, who scored the first victory of his 13-year career earlier this season in New Orleans, had a 4-under-par 68 and was at 8-under 208. No one else was within five shots of the lead going into Sunday's final-round chase for a first pize. Tied for third at 212 four shots back of Eastwood were 1s MOST CARS exclusively at.
