The Snaffle Bit Futurity matches 3-year-old horses from around the world against each other in contests to cut a steer from a herd, then control the movement of the animal along a fence and into the center of an arena.

Mounts are judged on how well they respond to riders' commands to turn, spin and maneuver. The Snaffle Bit Futurity, which originated in Sacramento, was held in Reno from 1975-92. During that time, it grew from a small gathering with 128 horses and a few thousand spectators to an international event bringing more than 600 horses, nearly 2,000 participants and tens of thousands of fans. Horses and riders compete for more than $700,000 in prize monev, and mounts can sell for up to $80,000. Reno Mayor Jeff Griffin said the event's return to Reno is "extremely gratifying." Futurity will make its first appearance Sept.

24-Oct. 3, 1999, in the Reno Livestock Events Center. The finals will be broadcast on ESPN-TV. The event will draw about 15,000 spectators who will spend more than $4 million, said Phil Keene, head of the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority. Average household income of NRCHA members is $109,000, among the highest of any special-interest group in the nation.
