today at Ely City Cemetery. A native of Gunnison, Utah, he was born Nov. 25, 1912, to Hyram and Edna Madsen Salmon, and had lived in White Pine County most of his life. Salmon was a painter for Kcnnccott for 40 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of F.atter-day Saints, McGill Ward, White Pine Historical Society and Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

He also served as secretary of a Painters Union local. Surviving are his daughters, Marian Durk of Las Vegas and Edna Gilbert of Winnemucca; daughter, Louise Budak; sister, Juanita Hale, both of Reno; for April 17-21 at the Sparks Family YMCA. A native ol Sliuo. he was born Jan. 1, 1901 to Thomas A. and Ruth Hall Jett, and had lived in Reno lor the past five years, coming from San Jose, Calif. Jett was an encinecr for the coast division of Southern Pacific Railroad for 41 years, before retiring.

Jones Francis Russell Jones, 78, died March 22, 1995, at Washoe Medical Center. A native of Bethlehem, he was born April 27, 1916, to Edward and Lucy Jones, and had lived in Reno for the past 21 years, coming from Strawberry, Calif. Jones was in the Navy lor more than 25 years, retiring as a chief petty officer.

Surv iv ing are his widow. Gcnevive of Reno; son, Charles of Antioch, daughter. Mary Lopez ol Barstow, five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A luneral is scheduled lor 1 1 a.m. Saturday at Ross, Burke Knobcl Mortuary, Reno, with burial at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Fernlev.

A memorial is being established with American Heart Association, 1201 Terminal Way, Suite 2 1 5, Reno 89502. John Koontz CARSON CITY John Koontz, 88, former Nevada secretary of state, died March 2 1 1 995, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. A native of Goldfield, he was born Oct. 19, 1906, to Louis Kossuth and Ada Mae Halstead Koontz, and had lived in Carson City since 1 943, coming from Goldtield. Koontz served as secretary of state for seven consecutive terms and served in public office for 34 years.

He was appointed chief deputy bank examiner and deputy state auditor by Gov. E.R. "Ted" Carville and served with Govs. Vail Pittman, Charles Russell, Grant Sawyer, Paul Laxalt and ike O'Callaghan. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Nevada State Library and Archives and in February a room in the new building was dedicated in his honor.

A member and twice past exalted ruler of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 1072, Koontz was also a member of National Secretaries of State Association, where he served as president in 1 958 and was a past member of Lions Club International and Knights of Pythias and a life member of Disabled Americans Veterans and Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He worked as a campaign manager for Mary Goiack for Congress and Harry Reid's U.S. Senate campaign. Koontz was a World War II Army veteran and a graduate of Goldfield High School.

Surviving are his widow, Margaret Elizabeth of Carson City, two nepnews ana nve nieces. Visitation is scheduled from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley, Cemetery and Mausoleum. A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with burial at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

A native of Hillsboro, he was born Jan. 10, 1 898, and had lived in Boise for the past 1 2 years, coming from the Little Salmon River, near Riggins, Idaho. He lived in Ely for 45 years. Bower was a carpenter. Fie was a member of Ely Masonic Lodge 29.

His first wife, Helen Lage, died in Q72. A son. Air Force Maj. Joseph Edward, was lost in combat rinrine the Vietnam WaY in 1 965. Another son, Jack, also died earlier.

A native of Suffolk, she was born Feb. 28, 1909, to Eli and Bertha Copcland Reid, and had lived in Sparks for the past 35 years, coming from San Francisco.

Mrs. Castro was a homemaker. I ler husband, Nicholas, died Nov. 12, 1987. Surviving are her sons, Del de la Pena of Canoga Park, Ramon de la Pena of Granite Bay, and Alberto de la Pena of San Francisco; nine grandchildren; and nine great hosts the Mad Hatter's Tea Partv Fashion Extravaganza at 1 p.m.
