BARGAIN CARLOAD PRICES April 1,2 'Helter CBS drama of Manson murders By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD (UPI) "Helter Skelter," the TV film version of Vincent Bugliosi's best-selling story of the Manson clan, is a hot potato that CBS finally has agreed to air after three delays.

-director Tom Gries completed the film for Lorimar Productions last December and watched the network juggle his four hour movie of the Manson murders, afraid of the controversy it might create. It will be seen the nights of April 1 and 2 from 9-11 p.m. with a disclaimer, "Advisory: Due to mature theme, viewer discretion advised." Gries is a dynamic, athletic man, bald as Telly Savalas and among the best directors in television. His credits include "The Glass House" and "The Migrants," both of which created considerable controversy. "Originally," he said, Skelter' had a February release date and two more in March.

But CBS brass delayed it. They're worried about the violence in the film along with the controversial aspects. "Every executive wanted to see the finished product. And each one of them had reservations about it. "There wasn't any fear of reprisals from the remnants of the Manson clan, although there have been threatening calls to the Lorimar Gries said his screenplay follows Bugliosi's book! in detail.

Whenever possible, he took his film crew to actual locations of the Manson "family" activities. "We couldn't use Sharon Tate's house," he said. "But we did use the La Bianca house, the Kern County Courthouse, the Los Angeles Hall of Justice and all the rest. "I hope we've pictured the clan realistically. I tried to show them as faceted human beings.

If I'd painted them all black it would have removed the reality of the drama. "Obviously they are aberrant, abnormal people. But they aren't wildly insane. And we've depicted all the major characters Manson, Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, Linda Kasabian, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie A Van 9: Houten. "Only Lynette Fromme and Sandra Good are given other names for legal reasons.

They're still involved in court actions. "The film shows Manson for exactly what he is. It's not the sort of movie to encourage others to follow his footsteps. "I tried to show three things. First, that Manson and his group were not an isolated phenomenon but a symptom.

Secondly, I hope it puts up a warning signal for parents of recalcitrant kids not to throw them out on the street. "And thirdly, I wanted! to make a case in favor of capital punishment. Manson and his clan to my way of thinking are incapable of rehabilitation. "If and when any of them get out of prison the girls will be more dangerous than Manson." CBS executives were chary of the explicit violence in the scenes of the seven bloody murders at the Tate house and the killing of the La Blancas. "I knew we couldn't get away with the details of the murders," Gries said.

"But I didn't want not to show them and make Manson and his killers look like martyrs. "So we superimposed a closeup of actress Marilyn Burns, who played Kasabian, testifying about the murders over the action to allow viewers to see what is going on. But not too much in detail. The murder scenes really aren't terribly shocking using this technique." Gries purposely sought an unknown cast to stark reality of the dramatization. He found a startling lookalike for Manson in actor Steve Railsback.

"When we took Steve to Kern County, where Manson WAS arrested, people actually shrank away from him," Gries said. "'The resemblance was so close a couple of the women employes actually screamed at the sight of him. "Manson has television privileges in prison and I think he will like the publicity because it shows his ability to manipulate his followers. That was important to him. We used his own words from the hearings and trials." One gets the feeling Gries would much prefer that Manson and his followers had all gone to the gas chamber.

Who will get to live in governor's mansion? SACRAMENTO (UPI) A Senate committee has unanimously approved a measure giving Lt. Gov. Mervyn Dymally or other state constitutional officers an opportunity to live in the new governor's mansion, which Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr.

has left vacant. The bill (SB1521) by Sen. Alfred E. Alquist, D-San Jose, cleared the Democratic-dominated Governmental Organization Committee Tuesday on a 6- 0 vote and was sent to the Finance Committee. Under the bill, Dymally would get first option to use the $1.3 million villa, followed by Secretary of State March Fong Eu, Treasurer Jesse Unruh, Controller Ken Cory and finally the single Republican officeholder, Attorney General Evelle Younger.

Dymally already has indicated he and his wife are satisfied with their current home. But Ms. Eu said she would move into the mansion if given the chance. Brown has refused to move into the mansion, calling it wasteful. The mansion, which costs $86,000 to protect and maintain while empty, was authorized during the administration of former Gov.

Ronald Reagan. The same committee last year killed Brown's proposal to use the mansion for state government meetings and seminars. Sounds TV audio needs improvement By Stephen Ford NEW YORK (NEA) While the entertainment industry continues to astonish the public with its technological miracles, such as videodiscs, remote control turntables and 3-D laser beams that go bump in the night the primeval state of television's audio transmission leads to suspect TV sound engineers would be befuddled by gravity. If there is ever need for rapid improvement in any. facet of television, programthe flat.

stale emitted ming aside obviously. it is in from that insult called your TV speaker. Ask anyone who's settled down before the video cyclops for a weekend Midnight Special and wished afterward they had turned in early. TV audio engineers are the first to admit the sound from most TVs is little better than that of a $2.98 transistor radio but claim the fault lies mainly with Ma Bell, who beams most TV audio transmissions. Audio broadcasting equipment used today was originally developed 40 years ago and has never been updated.

Ma Bell, the monopolistic behemoth that can beam conversations from the Moon to Washington D.C., 'says it won't improve sound transmissions until TV receivers 'are equipped with the more sophisticated apparatus necessary for good sound reception. TV manufacturers say they won't do so unless Ma Bell proves she can deliver better audio. It's Catch 22 but unfortunately it's the consumer that suffers for their silliness. The only alternative right now is for -conscious local TV stations to arrange simultaneous broadcasts with nearby radio stations so the sound portion comes over the superior radio receiver. This two-step method.

while effective. is a step backward considering there is absolutely no reason TV can't improve its sound. LAMB Have you ever seen dilated veins in the head near the temple and above the eye (forehead) and below the eye (lower lid)? When 1 bend over this area swells.

When I stand up gravity brings the blood back the heart. My doctor says this is abnormal and due to poor circulation, the same as enlarged veins in my legs. I would like your comment and advice on this problem. DEAR READER At the risk of being facetious I would suggest that you not bend over so much. Of course these veins will stand out if you bend over.

Blood is a liquid and it tends to run downhill. Why don't you do a little experiment? Hold your hand out at the level of your stomach and look at the veins fill up over the back of the hand, now hold your hand up just above the level of your eyes and watch the veins drain out.It is not abnormal for the veins to fill in the back of the hand when you hold the hand sufficiently lower than the level of the heart. It is not abnormal for the veins in your neck and head to stand out if you're going to bend over so that your head is lower than your heart. Now you may have some local condition that concerns your doctor that I wouldn't be aware of without seeing your physical features but I can assure you that all the normal people I have ever seen who stood on their head or bent over far enough have their veins stand out through the influence of gravity. For information about varicose veins send 50 cents for The Health Letter, number 5-8.

Send a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope for mailing. Address your letter to me in care of this newspaper, P. O. Box 326, San Antonio, Texas 78292. DEAR DR.

LAMB You mention fortified milk frequently. Will you please tell me what you mean by fortified skim milk? I have been drinking powdered milk for many years. Is that okay? DEAR READER The dry powdered milk available in the supermarkets is mostly nonfat dry milk so I am certain that's what you are using. It will not contain any significant amounts of fat or cholesterol. It is suitable for low-fat, -cholesterol diets.

Milk which has been fortifled, whether you are speaking of low fat (2 per cent fat) or skim milk, means that nonfat milk solids have been added to it. The nonfat milk solids basically include the protein found in normal milk and calcium and other substances except fat. That's why fortified milk contains more calcium and more protein than ordinary. whole milk does. If you use low-fat milk you can estimate that about onethird of the calories in' that milk comes from fat.

When you need to restrict the fat in the diet that is certainly an improvement over whole milk since about half of its calories comes from fat. The best way to totally avoid fat and cholesterol from milk products though is to use fortified skim milk or the powdered milk which you are using. Of course one should get protein from other sources In the diet too. It is not a good idea to depend solely on milk for protein. That's why your diet should also include a reasonablo amount of meat, fish and poultry.

These foods plus milk and milk products provide the highest quality of protein found in most diets. Ask Dick Kleiner Lucy no Red By Dick Kleiner DEAR DICK: In the late '30s, Walter Winchell exposed Lucille Ball as a card-carrying Communist and there was a picture of her membership card in the paper. Was Winchell right? G.B., Troy, Ohio Technically, yes. This story has been rehashed so often I thought it was forgotten, but apparently it keeps coming up. To set the record straight, when Lucy first came to Hollywood early in the '30s, she joined the party out of sympathy for her old Uncle Ned, an She never was a Communist, however, and was completely cleared by the House UnAmerican Activities Committee.

DEAR DICK: Did Lucille Ball live in Portland, in 1949 for a few months? A friend claims that he met Lucy in 1949 and she was using an alias. DENNIS E. LENHART, Pendleton, Ore. The friend is wrong. Lucy's friends say she was making films in Hollywood that year.

DEAR DICK: Seeing Mr. Coffee on TV, reminds me did Joe DiMaggio ever marry again? C.P. WISE, Rossville, Ga. No. After Marilyn Monroe died, Joe never married again.
