Monday, February 16,1976 -4 Continues to Feb. 22 Record crowds likely for Date Festival Riverside County's 1976 National Date Festival at Indio rolled through its Friday opening and three-day holiday weekend with anticipated record crowds for the l(klay event that ends Feb. 22. No official attendance count was available at press time, but management estimates the tally would be well over the 100,000 mark for the first four days.

Visitors have been enjoying pleasant weather and the National Weather Service here predicts fair and mild weather for the duration of the festival. This morning, the nation's official Washington's Birthday holiday, highlight for the day Pearl Mathews dies at 87 Pearl M. Mathews, a Redlands resident for 48 years, died here Saturday at the age of 87. Funeral services for the former resident of 920 Texas street are set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Redlands Temple Baptist Church, Rev.

Wayne Nolen, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Montecito Memorial Park, Emmerson-Bartlett Redlands chapel in charge. Copa del Oro, Chapter No. 142 will officiate at graveside services. Friends may call at the Emmerson-Bartlett Redlands Chapel after 5 p.m.

Tuesday. The family has requested that donations be made to the Redlands Temple Baptist Church. Mrs. Mathews, a native of Arkansas, is survived by six children, W. D.

Powers of Portland, John Mathews of Boise, Idaho; Clifton Mathews of Palm Springs; Raymond Mathews of Republic, Arthur Mathews of San Bernardino; and Mrs: Carl (LaVerne) Massie of Redlands. She also leaves 14 grandchildren, 30 grandchildren, four great- great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Purvis of Stockton, and Mrs. Addie Reynolds of Adamson, Okla. Mrs.

Mathews was a member of Temple Baptist Church and Electra Chapter No. 11 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Muldrow, Okla. Her late husband, Oliver, was a Redlands blacksmith from 1940 to 1954. The festival's National Horse Show, staged every afternoon in the main arena with the hilarious camel and ostrich races as intermission attractions, has been drawing capacity crowds. A total of 767 exhibitors, from throughout California and five western states, have 991 horses competing in the show. Also drawing capacity crowds is this year's Arabian Nights Pageant, a spectacular outdoor musical production staged in free evening performances at 6:45 p.m.

with an extra performance on Saturday at 8:20 p.m. to take care of the overflow crowd. The Date Festival's salute to America's Bicentennial is the "Pageant of Flags," a thrilling narrative production showing the history of our nation's flags displayed by actors dressed in our nation's military uniforms worn since 1776. This production is staged every afternoon at 4 p.m. on the big Arabian Stage.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 17-18-19, are the three days the festival honors our Senior Citizens. On these days there will be special entertainment, contests and prizes. Special events for Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 17-18, will be the Blue Grass Music Jamboree, an old time pickin' and fiddlin' contest with banjos, fiddles and mandolins competing on the first day and Blue Grass bands on the second day.

The program starts at noon on both days. A gala Salute to Mexico will be staged on Sunday, Feb. 22, the final day of the festival, featuring an exciting group of entertainers direct from Baja California. Visitors are invited to participate in the Junior Livestock Auction starting at 1 p.m., Feb. 21 with prize-winning swine, lambs and beef going up for bid.

Popular exhibit attractions are the elaborate date and citrus feature displays, one of the west's biggest gem and mineral shows, art exhibition, photo salon, flower and garden show, junior livestock and many more departments. Gates to the Indio fairgrounds are open from 10 a.m.-to-lO p.m. daily. The carnival Midway is open until midnight. School Menu The menu for lunches served in Redlands elementary school cafeterias this week is as follows: fish sticks with catsup, corn, celery and peanut butter, buttered bread, orange wedges.

taco with cheese, lettuce and tomato, peas, peaches, graham cracker. pattie on a bun with lettuce, tomato, and pickle, cabbage and cheese salad, applesauce, and cookie. with meat and cheese, green salad, carrot sticks, French bread, and peaches. All lunches include a half pint of milk. Those served in district elementary schools cost 50 cents and those served in junior and senior high schools cost 60 cents.

Rescue unit Two executed Firemen today answered two rescue calls, the first coming at 2:11 a.m. when Marie Ralph, 816 College avenue, reported breathing difficulty. Firemen gave her oxygen and stood by until she was taken to Redlands Community Hospital by ambulance, Capt. Henry A. Moore said.

The rescue unit was sent to Sandman motel, 1120 W. Colton avenue, at 3:28 a.m. when a guest, Bill Nevin of Palm Springs, suffered convulsions resulting from a malfunctioning pacemaker, according to Moore. February and cheese, buttered mixed vegetables, peanut butter cup with celery stick, fruit cup and bread with butter. by cyclists Two leaders of a motorcycle gang were shot and killed in an execution-type slaying in the gang's Glen Avon clubhouse early yesterday in what appeared to be a retaliation by a rival outlaw motorcycle gang. Riverside County Sheriff's investigators said the two victims were each shot twice in the back of the head and were apparently singled out from a dozen gang members attending a party at the clubhouse. The two were reported to be the local and national presidents of the Renegade Motorcycle club.

One victim was identified as John Wesley Dutter, 35, of Pedley. The name of the other victim, a Glen Avon resident in his 20s, was withheld. Sheriff's investigators have identified one of the suspects as an Orange County resident, but have been unable to locate him. They did not have names of other suspects. Shed burglarized Thieves yesterday escaped with four to five traveler's checks worth $50 each and a collection of personal papers after they forced their way into a storage shed behind the home of Lawrence Cole, 1155 E. Pioneer avenue, police said. Two youths were seen near the home shortly before the incident was reported but no arrests were made, police said.

Store window smashed Vandals yesterday caused about $150 damage to McMahan's furniture, 127 E. State street, when they smashed a window on the east side of the building, police said. Officers said it is not known what was used to smash the window. Nothing was reported stolen from the store, according to a police report. Darren Sporrong, 8, loses fight for life An eight-year-old Redlands boy died Friday of injuries received when his bicycle collided wih a motorist on Palo Alto drive near Puesta Del Sol Feb.

2. Darren Lee Sporrong, 30481 Alta Mira drive, died at Loma Linda University Medical Center following 12 days in an intensive care unit. Sporrong received a concussion, compound leg and arm fractures and internal injuries when he. collided with a car driven by Jeffery Steven Perry, 207 W. Cypress avenue, after making a left turn from Puesta Del Sol onto Palo Alto drive.

Sporrong is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sporrong, and two' brothers, Robert Jon and Jeremy Dane. He also leaves his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.

Floyd Hollinger of Redlands, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Venice Pratt of Riverside. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day-Saints, Bishop Bruford K. Reynolds presiding.

Private interment will be held at Crestlawn Memorial Park, Riverside. Friends may make contributions to the Darren Sporrong scholarship fund, in care of Col. Robert L.
