Soon a remodeled Mortuirj both exterior and interior erith a pleasing homelike atmosphere affording better service to the community. Presentation of a gift of $10,000 by the Hospital Auxiliary to Redlands Community Hospital was a highlight of the annual dinner meeting of the hospital attended by 150 persons last night in the hospital cafeteria. The gift, presented by Mrs. Robert Cox, outgoing president of the Auxiliary, was made possible by revenues from the gift shop operated by volunteers headed by Mrs. Karl Timblin.

At the organization meeting of the Board of Directors following the meeting, William G. Moore was re-elected corporate body were Donald S. Pierson, Urban M. Derkum and Paul H. Gerrard.

Other members of the board are Joseph W. Enarson, Col. Joseph G. Wogen, G. Edgar Berresford and Robert J.

Bierschbach. Moore reported that the hospital had a gross income of $5,050,000 during 1972 and expenses of $4,874,000 and a net income of $176,000 which was transferred to the building fund. "It cost the average patient $100 a day to stay in the hospital," Mr. Moore said. "The average stay was sue days making a total of $600.

Fortunately, we do have, with Medicare and private insurance plans, a system of prepaid health care so that 85 per cent of the cost was borne by insurance or governmental agencies. "More than half of the patients were covered by Medicare and Medi-Cal, a total of 52 per cent," he said. "In dealing with the government on Medicare, hospitals are finding it increasingly difficult to know exactly Where they stand as final audits lag a year or two behind settlements. This difficulty will increase as the clamor for increased governmental aid for health care continues. "One thing you can be certain about," he said "is that if the government takes over health care it will cost the taxpayers more than the system and the standard of care will not be as high." Mr.

Moore listed as major accomplishments of the year the accreditation of the hospital by the Joint Commission on Accreditation, a national organization which sets standards for hospitals, completion of the new laboratory and x-ray wing, the Laser equipment for eye treatment, and the Laminair flow in the surgery to permit certain orthopedic procedures such as the total hip operation. He said that the hospital had received donations of $96,000 during the year and called attention to bequests of $10,000 by the late A. B. Drake, a former director of the hospital, and Mrs. Emily Ethel Johnson, a former Pink Lady, a bequest of $50,000.

Geroge DeLange, in his annual report, reviewed statistics showing that prices at Redlands Community Hospital are comparable or lower than those in hospitals in nearby communities. His report showed that while 62 per cent of the patients live in either Redlands, Yucaipa or Mentone, there is a trend toward a larger percentage from people living in other communities. He noted also the decline in the number of babies born in Redlands Community and observed that one-third of the babies born to Redlands mothers are born in other hospitals. Mr. DeLange said that while statistics are of interest, the.

main objective of the hospital is patient care. He read a letter from a woman in Texas, whose sister had been a patient in the Redlands hospital, expressing gratitude for the loving care and understanding. "It is this type of response from the public that encourages our staff of 400 to strive for excellence," he said. Dr. Robert Tarter, chief of the medical staff for 1972, reported on activities of the staff which is composed of more than 100 physicians 70 of whom are on the active staff and the others on the consulting staff.

He pointed particularly to the large number of specialists on the staff which enables Redlands to provide an exceptionally high standard of medical care, probably one of the trghest in California for the size of the community. Mrs. Cox, in reporting for the Auxiliary, noted that 266 members, of whom 170 are active volunteers, gave a total of 22.509 hours of service in 1972. The Candystripers have a membership of 55 under chairmanship of Mrs. Michael Malis and Mrs.

James. Trethewey of the Pink Ladies. The Candystripers gave 6200 hours of service and raised $55 through the sale of stationery, and $115 through the sale of memorial lights for the Christmas tree. Mrs. Gordon Corwin and Mrs.

Volney Kincaid directed the White Elephant sale at the Jaycees Concession Fair and raised $505 for refurbishing of the hospital lobby. The auxiliary allocated funds of more than $7,000 for various items to improve the hospital during the year. The hospital corporate body is composed of 100 people in the community who serve five year terms with 20 elected each year. Those elected last night were: Class of 1978, Mrs. S.

County Supervisors eliminated $42,700 in fees at the urging of Third District Supervisor Dennis L.

Hansberger, of Yucaipa. Board members. agreed the fees, ranging from $15 to $20 per year for every underground storage tank at the stations, are improper because there is no necessity for regular inspection of the special fill pipes which have had to be installed to prevent splashing of gasoline when the tanks are being filled. Hansberger pressed the point that, because the APCD is not inspecting the fill pipes annually, the yearly charges constitute a tax rather than a fee for recouping costs. APCD Director Donald M.

Thomas said a few of the fill pipes have been found disconnected and argued the need for occasional inspections will entail some costs.
