By Lori Gilbert GANNETT NEWS SERVICE MINNEAPOLIS Wednesday's match-up between Oakland's Dave Stewart and Minnesota's Jack Morris was one Athletics manager Tony La Russa eagerly anticipated. The "two warriors," as La Russa called them, didn't disappoint.

Stewart, once seemingly invincible in April, winning 20 straight in the month dating back to 1987, failed to win for the third consecutive game. It was the second loss in a row for Stewart, 1-2, after a no-decision. "Today I had one rough inning," said Stewart, whose ERA over the last three games is 10.00 and overall is 7.56.

Oakland batters hit .236 and the team's ERA was three games. "I was aware that our bullpen was getting a little thin," Burkett said. "I thought it was important to throw six or seven innings, but I didn't want to put too much pressure on myself. Our middle relief has been throwing a lot of innings so it was nice to keep them out off the game." Burkctt (2-1) struck out six. walked two and lowered his ERA from 4.26 to 3.2 1.
