By Diana Dawson TVData Features Syndicate A brave Quaker girl learns that by opening her heart to people different from herself, she may replace her fears with appreciation in the season premiere of HBO's Dear America. "Standing in the Light," airs Friday, Sept. 24.

This is the continuation of the acclaimed historical series featuring courageous female protagonists that premiered in March. As the half-hour story opens, 16-year-old Caty Logan (Stephanie Mills) fears for her family's safety as the terrifying attacks on settlers by the Lenape tribe Increase. Caty's father (C. David Johnson) assures her that the light of God shines in all creatures, including "our Indian brothers," and that if she btands in that light, she'll learn to trust. But every crackle of the underbrush threatens her faith and composure.

Once the Lenapes capture Caty and her younger brother Thomas (Marc Donato), she becomes bitter and certain that her assessment of them as savages was correct Only Caty's diary provides her solace as she records her feelings of terror and hopelessness in a strange new world filled with different customs, clothing and ways of communicating. Everything that was constant in her life except for pen and paper has changed. Slowly, she leams that the Lenapes are basically a peaceful people. Even their religious belief in a "great spirit" is not that different from her practice of worship. The tribe respects nature, and the Lenapes give to those around them without expecting anything in return.

Caty's personal growth and the lessons she leams are just as relevant today as they were in the Delaware River valley of 1763. Look more closely -Caty calls her diary "a voice to my fears."
