Friday, November 22, 1991 3B NUCLEAR WASTE Friends, foes claiming support in polls on Yucca Mountain project sion on Nuclear Projects said an ad campaign promoting the safety ofthe proposed repository at Yucca Mountain is a flop. But the associate director of the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project said that along with concern, he is hearing strong support for continued study ofthe area's suitability for storing high-level radioactive waste. "It's important that we get this out ofthe political and get it into the scientific arena," Carl Gertz said. Gertz was at the Lawlor Events Center Thursday night, along with Department of Energy scientists, to field questions about the controversial site study. Earlier Thursday, opponents ol the project said Nevadans have not been misled by ads touting its safety.

"The good news is that Nevadans won't be fooled by lies no matter how much money is behind them," said former Gov. Grant Sawyer, who is chairman of the state's Commission on Nuclear Projects. The American Nuclear Energy Council plans to spend some $8.7 million in advertising within Nevada over the next three years to convince Nevadans of the safety ofthe project. The repository opponents held news conferences on Thursday in Reno and Las Vegas to report that a recent poll shows Nevadans are not buying the message. "I think the ratepayers of the utility companies who have paid for these ads would be very surprised to learn what a flop this program has truly been," Sawyer said.

The poll was conducted by Decision Research of Eugene, Ore. More than 500 Nevadans were polled from Oct. 25-Nov. 7. According to the poll, 74 percent of those surveyed oppose the dump and 1 9 percent favor it, with 6.5 percent undecided.

But Gertz said a University of Nevada, Las Vegas poll indicated concerns about risks associated with the repository coupled with confidence in the experts' opinions about it. this week in Las Vegas and convinced him that southern Ne-' vadans support the continuation of the decade-long studies which, have already cost $1 billion and will cost $5 billion by the time oft completion. VI WHILE THEY LAST UVUUUNJUUVUUVU LAS VEGAS (AP) Residents of the Red Rock Canyon area say they'll need more information before they can be convinced of the benefits of a hydroelectric plant near the scenic area west of Las Vegas. Meanwhile, the Clark County commission has rejected a proposal to build a housing development in the canyon's national conservation area. Officials ofthe Utah-based Blue Diamond North Pumped Storage Power Co. met with some 50 Red Rock-area residents and a five-member advisory committee Wednesday night to hear details of the project. Promoters said the hydroelectric plant near the scenic area would blend in with the hilly landscape and provide electricity when it is needed most, while using little water.

After the meeting, Ken Moul-tray, chairman of the Red Rock Citizens Advisory Committee, said more information was needed before the group could support the project. The plant would pump water to a man-made pond atop Blue Diamond Hill at night when electricity is cheap, then let it rush down a pipeline to drive two turbines in the day, Evan Blythin, a member of the citizens advisory committee, questioned the move by the Utah company to build in Nevada. "If this idea is so hot, why isn't Nevada Power proposing it?" Blythin said. "Why are we paying for an out-of-state business to suck all the money out of here for the next 50 years?" The meeting with the Utah power executives came after the county commission rejected a plan to allow developers to build 27 new houses on 49 acres of land in Red Rock's Calico Basin. Robert Sidell, who represented area homeowners, said there is concern about letting developers divide the property to sell as home lots.
